Will FFXIV:ARR capable of standing on its own two feet after a while? What went wrong with Tera that made it F2P?
*
Its too early to commend on FF14 ARR , although I am indeed seeing very large improvement over the 1.0 version.

Offtopic : on TERA

These "big budget MMORPG " often are funded via investment from several big corporation . And since games running on subscription is still the most stable form of profit , most of these mega big hits launch with a monthly subscription model .

However these games are often neglected by its player sometimes after launch due to issues that constantly show up such as not enough end game content , game imbalances , hacking and other issues yet developers not able to come up with a solution quick enough . At the same time of losing subscribers , the investors would be like ants on heated frying pan , rushing the publishers to look for profit .

As a result , they would often switch to Free-2-play to earn its final quick bucket of cashes and eventually shutting the game down . A very good example of these would be AEON , RIFT and SWTOR. RIFT has recently been shutdown in Korea by TRION.

TERA fall exactly in the same category . Beside the vibrant graphics , I remember almost nothing from the game . Because every single aspect in the game has been done in other games before and they do it way better .

I don't expect the game to stay alive for very long time at this rate after its final F2P struggle .

anyone else worried that the game might not succeed? hardly see any sub mmo's doing really well atm.

As stated by SE representative , the FF14 IP is solely owned by Square Enix . If the game fails , it would SE 's very own loss.

They do not have share the profit with the other investors , therefore the game will likely stay subscription model because they believe it is for the best for the long term game development.

As for subscription games, you are indeed correct except one . WOW which still has over 10 millions active subscribing player ( although it lost several hundreds k recently )

Subscription model is still the best for the health of the game and the wallet of the gamers . These F2P games have offered too much Pay-to-win perks for the guys who are willing to spend .

The F2P games affected a portion of younger players too especially Asian or developing countries(?) w/ not much $$ spend for P2P games... For me, 2.0 does look promising but for old timers they might need more than usual to feed their interest to stay as long as possible since the online gaming titles are like 10x times more than when FFXI was launched.

That's the thing with F2P , looking at games like Maple Story which claimed to have the most players among any online games ( mind you the F2P player numbers are irrelevant to the direct profit from the game since they are not subscription based )

You could have typical student who spent nothing for months or younguns who stole their parent's wallet to buy virtual items. You will have a large influx of cash income for a short while , but afterward you need to come out with more and more attractive product to make your players spend $$ , eventually spoiling the health of the game.

I am sure all of us has a lot to discuss and commend on FF14 , but I have restrained myself from saying much since the NDA has yet to be lifted , but yes it definitely need a lot more polishing in its current form and is far from ready-2-launch.

Judging from the current direction it is heading , it looks like the game is heading on a mixed portion from the 2 current most successful game , a cross over between GW2 & WOW . I am seeing a lot of shadows from both games atm. Not a bad thing I suppose if it can help to retain players .

i disregarded WoW because it's not a new game. The game has its up and down moments but from what i've been hearing so far about WoW (maybe im just a sucker for rumours) is that there has been a large decrease in players and most of them aren't new players.

Edit: I really do hope for the best for ffxiv, I'm excited to play the game, I want it to succeed for the sake of myself, players and SE.

It will always be used as a reference book for the ' successful subscribing mmorpg ', or the most successful MMORPG in history in general . On business perspective, it has generated so much income for blizzard and made them the online Games Giant throne.

Just look at Naoki , how often he mentioned the game in his interview. He had to be awared of its presence as well .

There are ups and downs of course but it is still way far ahead of any other existing mmo .
The decrease in players do happen to every game, but for a game that has 10 millions solid subscribing players ,
a few hundred K loss is not nearly enough to threaten Blizzard's position in the market in general.

Even though I like FFXIV and can play the game but I still don't like how SE still not accept SEA player to be a legit customer from Malaysia, or Singapore. Only Brunei is accepted T_T

totally agree... lol atleast when YoshiP involve, the process is indeed smoothen more than it use to be, usually very very awkward and hard to even process account management... xD

Also,

iOS and Android Security Software Token out already, can download and wait for further instruction to install it.

Got it just now. It seems it doesn't have the refresh button on main screen like Blizzard's where you just press it and it'll generate pass key w/o launching the app. Mine is Android. sad.gif

Not sure how SE implement their pass key... For Blizzard, theoretically it can use 1 key generator to share with few accounts as the app generates a serial number to be activated under Blizzard ID. So 1 app generates 1 serial number then registered under few accounts... hmm.gif
