After reading Anandtech review, it seems that the 256 Gb SSD is of a different brand compared to the 512GB SSD. Is that right.?

He seems to say the 512 Gb is good. What about the 256 Gb? In Apple Store website they don't tell us the brand of the SSD, how can we check?

Thanks

Yup, you are right. The speed is not really a deal breaker.

My main headache now is whether 256 Gb is enough or should I go for 512GB SSD. Cost difference around RM1900... Tough call... Sigh

If I were you, I'll transfer my files manually... and since I have the habit of keeping my files on my external drive since my SSD is only 240GB...

as for iTunes, copy the entire damn iTunes library folder to your new rMBP, then prep iTunes to read from that folder...

you mean copy the iTunes folder from my current Mac, then paste it on the same directory of my new Mac?
will i be able to continue synchronization on the new Mac without resetting my iPhone to factory setting?

yeah... providing all your media and app contents are within the iTunes folder... iTunes folder is like an ecosystem by itself... Whatever shit you have on your iTunes, it should be organised from within iTunes folder... but if you enjoy double-clicking media files every now and then from other locations, then that I cannot help...

I've been moving my iTunes folder from Snow Leopard to Lion and back and still manage to sync my stuff to my iPod touch without issue... Heck I've even tried copying iTunes folder from Windows-based iTunes into my Mac, also no issues...

Use Migration Assistant and Time Machine backup. Simplest and hassle free. Not only data, but all your apps and previous settings are maintained.

So basically just like putting all the data into the same places and setting into new MacBook pro right?
Hmmm but will it like using more spaces?

Yes, same places and setting into the new MBP. It will use the same space as your last backup to the Time Capsule.
If you want to set new, it can be good because you will not carry the "rubbish" over to your new MBP. However, you have to reinstall the the apps all over again one by one. You will have to learn where you place your data folders since everything is new.

Exact same problem I have bro.

But I thought with that RM2k difference to get a USB3.0 external HDD.

What happened when I moved from my MBA to MBP RD:

1. Unboxed at Machines KLCC. Copied Time Machine backup sparse bundle from my Time Capsule back home into an external HDD. Restore from that backup, missing chunks of settings and apps. Backup trashed. Command-R into Lion Recovery. Formatted/erase the flash storage (DO NOT format the Lion partition!), start from scratch. Clean install of Lion, so the machine runs nice and speedy.

2. Got home. Logged into Time Capsule at home. After Lion has been downloaded and installed, first boot up asks if wanna setup as new Mac or restore from backup. I chose restore from backup. Logged into the Time Capsule SSID. It found my MBA Time Machine backup. Restored from there.

3. PERFECT running MBP RD running from previous MBA Time MAchine backup.

From experience, you get better reliability using Time Machine restore and/or Migration Assistant if you are restoring from the same OS version. As in Lion backup restore to a new Mac running Lion as well. Snow Leopard/Leopard backups restoring to higher version OSX like Lion will not get a perfect restore up, some settings/prefs will need to be manually set up back again.

My iTunes, iPhoto, iWorks migrations are all done through Time Machine backup. That way I still have access to the old backups and old files I can retrieve back from Time Machine (by going back in time to copy them back to the present).

That iTunes folder copy method only works if you have ALL your media/content consolidated into the iTunes folder. My media/content for iTunes resides in an external Thunderbolt RAID array, which in turn makes restoring part pretty fast, and accurate coz it is only restoring the iTunes folders (iTunes media/content in separate location, remember?), and keeps the aliases pointing to the right place (to the Thunderbolt array). When dealing with almost 3TB worth of data in iTunes needing all pointed to the right location in the Thunderbolt array, I don't take chances, I'll let Time Machine do its thing.

@stringfellow - did you have similar issues with snow leopard when migrating between your past MBAs? I had no issues doing so between my late '08 unibody mbp and my '10 mbp, (snow leopard on both) but when I got my '11 mbp it was pretty apparent that lion no likey snow leopard.

@bry7 - I remember you posting quite a number of times on how you change MacBooks every year. why should it be any different this time around in terms of migrating?

Yup, I had problem migrating from Leopard to Snow Leopard on the 08-09 MBAs. Broken alias, erratic behavior of apps, the works. Had to reinstall from scratch.

Which is why I'm kinda glad I got this MBP RD still running Lion. The restore went without a hitch. Which is why I think Apple is ramping up Mac apps distribution via the Mac App Store, so that they can reduce the number of these glitches when restoring between Macs.
