The question of which switch is best is very difficult to answer because it's a personal thing.

For me, the Topre switch 45g uniform on my Realforce 87U beats anything Cherry can offer (I've tried them all including reds and vintage blacks). I also like capacitive buckling springs (IBM Model F), especially on days I want to feel and hear clickiness. Both these switches are easy on my fingers; I think the fact both are capacitive switches is not a coincidence either.

Hey guys! I'm about to get my first mechanical keyboard, and after doing some research I'm fairly sure of the specs I want.

Since there's so many of you out there with more experience than me, can you please recommend a keyboard that would fit the specs below?

- Cherry MX Brown (I do A LOT A LOT A LOT of touch-typing, so want a bit of tactile feel that doesn't need too much force)
- metal/steel plate underlying (hate the "give" in some keyboards when you bottom out)
- backlight brightness adjustable
- backlight does not "bleed" e.g. symbols & letters look clear when backlight is on instead of looking "blurry"
- PBT keys (do NOT want "glossy" kb) w/ laser etching (no engraving; want smooth keys)
- includes numpad
- "commonsense" design (e.g. not like Ducky's 9008G2 where the cable is forced to fold underneath at a 90-degree angle - see: this pic)
- metal key-puller (plastic ok if all of the other requirements above fulfilled)

Are there any shops with good variety of mechanical keyboards? Also, anyplace where I could "test" keyboards? A lot of shops either have very limited variety, or don't have display sets you can test (or both lol).

BONUS BUT NOT REQUIRED:

- mesh cable instead of typical plastic-coated cable for greater flexibility
- windowed Caps, NumLock keys etc
- WHITE KEYBOARD!! rclxm9.gif
- raised keys (like Corsair keyboards) instead of recessed keys (much easier to clean & pull out)
- nice/unique/interesting design (e.g. Corsair LOL)

Budget: Up to RM400.

Why don't I just get Corsair since I keep comparing? Because I think the price is ridiculously unfair & jacked up for a keyboard that isn't FULLY mechanical. Those few extra mechanical keys so expensive-meh, Corsair? Want to make expensive-looking, classy product, then skimp on quality. Cheapskates! (typing, so use a lot of Pg Up/Down/Del/Home/End)

Lastly, can anybody tell me if O-ring sound dampeners would spoil the tactile feel/bottoming-out feel of a mechanical keyboard? May want to mod later to reduce sound if necessary.

Thank you all so much for your time & answers!

What I know of is that PBT keycaps are non transparent, thus backlit is not an option for that,
but I still not sure of the Deck Legend's 2 layer sub-dye backlit thingy, how does it work and whats the method......

there's a few options need to be clarified.

First, backlight and PBT keys do not come in a set because PBT plastic is not translucent, hence you can only choose whether to have PBT key caps or ABS key caps (backlit capable).

Second, most of the boards comes with ABS key caps. Board makers rarely put PBT key caps on their board natively. Unlike Ducky 9008G2 PBT edition and the coming 9008G2pro PBT edition. BUT, you can always purchase PBT key caps from Taobao or any other sources (although mostly need import) no choice wha..

Third, regarding the Ducky's cable routing problem, that design is indeed stupid. but if you don't use that feature, performance wise, their boards are quite good.

Below is my recommendation for you based on your requirements, the final choice in on yours (critics from others are welcomed as well =D)

If you go for PBT key caps:
- Filco Majestouch 2 (buy PBT caps)
- Leopold FC500R (buy PBT caps)

- Buy from Taobao along with PBT key caps

- Ducky 9008G2 PBT edition (going EOL)
- Ducky 9008G2pro PBT edition (not available yet)

If you go for Backlit:
- CM Storm Trigger (heard they're good)
- Ducky 9008S

PLUM 104MX Cherry Red is selling at RM200+- shipped from China.. and yes, it is a mechanical keyboard

Thermaltake Challenger series ain't mechanical, they're gaming keyboard™ by marketing people, with lots of features and blings.

Thermaltake Meka series is mechanical. nod.gif

Seriously, price doesn't justify whether it's mechanical keyboard or not...

Yup, I found out the hard way after buying Logitech G110 for RM270 last year.
Was uncomfortable typing and after some research found that the keys are non standard. No wonder i kept typing the wrong key.
After 2 weeks gave it to my brother in law as present tongue.gif

Thanks for the info!! Sorry, didn't know that PBT + backlight don't go together (lol I thought my research "mencukupi" but apparently not). I'll probably wind up going with the PBT & sacrifice backlight as I really really hate the "shiny" look of worn keycaps.

However, with Filco keyboards I've seen a lot of ppl saying that when they wanted to replace the keys, the spacebar was a problem. Would the Leopold be more standard if I want to change keycaps?

I'm a banana so may have some trouble with taobao (unless I can bribe one of my chinese-literate pals lol), so prob not my first choice. Is there anyplace else I could look at mech keyboards locally?

Also, how's the key stability for the above boards which you recommended? E.g. Ducky uses cherry stabilizer for large keys on its keyboards, whereas Filco just uses a wire.

Do hope to hear from others!
