A joy to watch is Barca.
Barca's weaknesses were
a) Defence
b) Inability to change their strategy mid game- No Big No.9 centre. They sorely miss a predator
in Villa -similar to our situation
R madrid and chelsea set up for that. Like you mentioned
limit their opportunities and hope they miss them.
AND counter strike them with Ronaldo or Drogba to snatch a SUCKERs goal.
Formation 6-3-1
Yeah they could do with a little more depth in defence. Playing Masch in the heart of defence may work in countries who don't rely on big no.9's or keep the ball on the deck most of the time. In England however, you need bigger central defenders to deal with aerial threats. They miss Pique in this aspect. In terms of having a big no. 9 of their own, well some teams don't really use targetmen. Arsenal would sometimes use Henry to lead the line. Rafa played Mista alone when he was at Valencia. In the past, you'd visualise a big lumbering bloke when I mention, "central defenders". They needed to be big and tall against similarly large strikers like Duncan Ferguson, Carsten Jancker, Les Ferdinand, Niall Quinn, Jan Koller and so on. In today's game however, mobility is becoming a neccessity. It's something Carroll is having problems with. He doesn't get into good positions often enough and doesn't attack crosses well enough. Now, forwards are becoming smaller and quicker as route 1 football is becoming a thing of the past. Defenders have to this adapt and you now see smaller centrebacks who are quicker like Collocini, Cardoba, Milito, Puyol, Vermaelen, Jagielka, Richards, Ayala and Cannavaro, all of whom are under 6' tall. This a big no.9 isn't compulsory. Best have a Tim Cahill who is mobile and has the leap of a Kangaroo.
