Hi, I recently decided to renovate my house. Lot size around 2300sqft
Would like to ask how much does a interior designer cost?
Say I want him to design my whole house.

1.Do they charge by price per sqft? Another thing I heard people say that they charge by taking 10% from your reno cost, which mean if you use 100k to renovate, they charge you 10k. Is that true?
2.If not how they charge?
3.Is it worth the cost ? I won't have enough time to supervise the site visually.
4.I heard they only provide floor plan (their design)
5.For a regular person I don't think I can fully understand what they draw lol.. do they sketch it out? but i think sketch also cannot bring the whole feel without color and i think 3d drawn by them nowadays almost look like real so 3d is better ..How they charge for 3d? per view? per area or what? What's the price?
6.Can I find student to design for me? How much cheaper will it be? tongue.gif is it worth the risk?
7.Is it better to let the designer find his own contractor? or i myself find outside? I scared they pakat with contractor chop me here and there rclxub.gif

Anyone who hired a interior designer before please help me, interior designer can help me also if you want tongue.gif

What is your budget? What you want to do? What is your ideal outcome?

ID, can help you spend lots of money, can also give you idea where to save money. Some have their team of people. Some just design for you, give you 3D drawing.

If your renovation is big, and no time to look after, the ID can help of course all this come with $$$. Or get a project / site supervisor.

I don't think you have direct answer. Some charge you per design so they give you design, and you go find your own contractor. Some is per project covering A to Z, help you managed, change design if situation change. Most of these people will have his/her own contacts of contractors you have the option not to use them.

Just get few ID, ask them how they charge. Some will give you full proposal I have one, super nice, price also super nice.

the price is depend on what outcome u want and the material you want. if u plan to do big reno n got no time to monitor n no idea what to do, better hire ID. the price is very subjective one, depend on how much the wanna charge you n what service they provide.

1) It depends on the Designer him/her or their agency. You can even ask IKEA to do it for free (take measurements yourself) and they will kit your home with their products
3) These people are not taxi drivers. It's not as simple as getting you from A to B with a meter. You have different tastes and the designer will try to incorporate that into the space, if they're good that is and don't just give you a "standard" design. The price will be how picky you are. Same for 2) 3) 4)
5) Go to a bookstore and browse the architecture and home books there. Get an idea of what you want so you'll be able to tell your designer !
6) I'm not saying students are not good, but the best ones will probably be already part timing for agencies. And you can't blame STUDENTS for mistakes because you were cheap. You will also have to supervise them more which apparently you don't have time for.
7) Again depends on the designer. You can ask for a quotation 1st then try and see if anybody will give you a better price. A good designer will of course try and package the whole renovation at a reasonable price and time frame.

Student, they don't even know if what they design are practical, or even the material use are available in Malaysia.

This is what my company does currently; if we are chosen to handle the entire project, then the design fee is still charged but at a discounted rate.
If it's just design only, it normally depends variables like the complexity of the design, amount of 3d renderings required, submission drawings(if needed) and the amount of minor or major amendments allowed.

As a reference, we did a RM 140k project for a 1,400 sf condo just before cny and the design fee quoted was RM2,500.

Hmm, mind me asking if your client did it full package? Or just design? Sounds like already a discounted rate.

For question
1,2,4,5) different designer have different type of way to charge, so just survey with few and look at their work and the package they offered better, think there is no standard cost here

3) depends on you, but i would say if you got no time to supervise then is worth the price and less headache provided you get a reliable ID

6) student can be good in design but when come to actual site then i don't think they really can handle it

7) actually you can find your own contractor to quote then compare the price between your own and from the ID side, this way can help you to save cost also

TLDR. ill just summarize in short for you. normally, a designer would charge by per SF, that's if you request him for only the design. if they include the renovation, the fee would be scraped. i just renovated my 1800sf condo for around 200k but the total cost include loads of hacking. 200k is the rough estimation as i did some of the wet works myself (dad's company). as for the drawings, same as above. if you let them handle the renovation progress, the fees for drawings and planning will be 'scrapped' off but normally they'll earn it back in the outsourcing of materials and such.

it is always recommended that you get a good designer as he would be there to supervise for you. all in all, good things come with a price.
