Don't bring your thick wallet into shop you would be safe most likely..

don't bring your credit cards too

be it cash, debit or credit card... you both know that if you are in good terms and have a good relationship with the shop... they can let you bring it home first and come pay later right? as long as it is not a priceless machine... you die one way or the other... that's they way they fish the big water fishes if they are desperate enough....
best prevention method in my opinion... never set foot in the shop... dun even think about going to the shop or even browse their website... if you are extreme enough... stay away from bike forums... and cycling dedicated sites...

already tempted to upgrade clip shoe now.. any idea what to look for when you shop for cleat + shoe?
there is nothing much to look for if price is your consideration...
easy breakdown of the brands...
shimano - typically heavier and last a lifetime but costs are reasonable, replacement cleats are quite reasonably priced too... around RM50
look - among the lighter ones with their polycarbonate pedal body or carbon ones, not so cheap, replacement cleats tend to be more expensive... RM50 for the keo cleats (without grip and very slippery) and RM70 or so for the cleo grips...+ point for having cleat protection caps, optional
time - among the expensive ones... dun see much of a point.. not light as well.. at least not as light as keo2carbon
exustar - quite cheap, not sure if the cleats are compatible with any brands above... reliability unknown to me...hard to find in KL
all of the pedals would have release tension adjustability as a standard feature....
the value minded people would mostly take shimano as it is the most common and most value for money... and they last longer than your bike without any servicing at all...i've seen a couple of look getting trashed and cracked polycarbonate bodies from crashes...shimano's will just come out unscathed and scratched...
the last thing to consider or in your situation is experiment with float... i run fixed / no float normally and cleats in stock form comes in the middle float range... mostly 4.5 degrees.. the max i think is 9.0 degrees...
look for shimano R540 which should be around RM150... 105 would be a good option for a hundred ++ more but it is only a stiffer spindle i think and lighter... ultegra would be overkill in price... dura ace... dun even mention...
people will tell you that look has a wider platform for better power transfer... but that is just depending on how you think.. the good thing about look is that it has the cleat protection caps if you walk around in your cycling shoes a lot when you go out for ride.. they save you from buying cleats over and over again.. and cleats dun come cheap if you start changing them 3 or 4 times per year... mostly grounded down due to excessive walking in the shoes....
shoes.... depends on you since you are into multisport... i think you need something that has good ventilation and easier to strap in and out... i kinda like the northwaves as they have this small port at the front end of the shoe.. they are very nice and cooling at speed but also quite pricey...
specialized i liked it too.. but not cheap being the problem... bont are great.. but i dun think they produce shoes with endurace athletes in mind...
scott has some very nicely priced ones... you should go hunt around a bit...
so... it is either the cheapo R540 or the Keo2Max from Look for around RM350... throw in a wee bit if you need to swap out the cleats for different float....
the only advice i can give on look pedals .. is to stay away from look keo easy at all costs.. might look cheap.. but they discarded tension adjustability feature on it... classic is the minimal to start with... keo2max if you can afford for the larger platform...
