Black more noise vs blue ?
Just for storage but people comment Green failure rate high and without notice.

yup, a bit noisy sweat.gif , but worth it lor, my black re4 found bad sector last month after 3yr plus usage 24/7, if it was blue, wrty aldy no more loh.

So , noise reduce , but warranty is 5 years biggrin.gif
Any firmware which can manually set hard disk rotation speed ?

Hey there Maxieos,

Just would like to share to you in regards to changing the RPM in a drive.

Changing the actual RPM is not possible. Modern drive heads float over the surface of the disk and do all of their work without ever physically touching the platters, they are magnetizing. The amount of space between the heads and the platters is called the floating height or flying height. It is also sometimes called the head gap, and some hard disk manufacturers refer to the heads as riding on an "air bearing". The read/write head assemblies are spring-loaded--using the spring steel of the head arms--which causes the sliders to press against the platters when the disk is stationary. (This is done to ensure that the heads don't drift away from the platters; maintaining an exact floating height is essential for correct operation.) When the disk spins up to operating speed, the high speed causes air to flow under the sliders and lift them off the surface of the disk--the same principle of lift that operates on aircraft wings and enables them to fly.

The distance from the platters to the heads is a specific design parameter that is tightly controlled by the engineers that create the drive. By adjusting the strength of the springs to match the other drive parameters (such as the speed the disks are spinning and the size and shape of the heads) the float height can be precisely maintained.

I think it would be safe to assume that changing the speed of rotation of the platter, would also affect the amount of lift created and would either cause the heads to float to high, to the point where it could not read from the disk, or too low and could cause a head crash.

If let say you are using Linux system, have a look at hdparm utility. Unfortunately, it doesn't allow you change HDD RPM but it allows you change some low-level performance options. Be careful, some options could be dangerous.

Just a thought of sharing, hope you find this information useful.

elliot_WD Thanks , guess it's more risky doing that.

super macgyver What kind to software you use to check for bad sector ? 1TB takes so long where last time i tried 500GB takes 6-7 hours to scan . rclxub.gif

Hey Maxieos,

Yup, it's definitely a risky one.

Well, alternatively you could try running the DLG(Data Lifeguard Diagnostics) for your drive to determine the health status. Just bear in mind that for DLG, it can only help to read the status and not fix any bad sectors. Here is the link on how to do so:

http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=4rQJdl

Please do share to us the test results. icon_rolleyes.gif

so i was wondering of whether to get a HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 4tb 7200rpm 24/7 HDD (HUS724040ALE640)
http://www.storagereview.com/hgst_ultrasta...hus724040ale640
my concern though is whether it would be better to wait for 2016 to get an x-point intel/micron hdd.

they promise cheaper, faster latencies, better iops, more capacity size, and better endurance than ssds.

right now for archival storage purposes, people still rely on hdds for the bigger and cheaper capacities. but with xpoint won't this change ?

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/07/int...ory-technology/
in terms of ssd capacities only lately has some models reached 6tb. however major downside is the ridiculously expensive price
http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/205362-...arket-this-july

and even crazier is samsungs 16gb ssd

Hey there Moogle Stiltzkin

If you have checked the HDD health status, and found that “CAUTION” is written under Health Status, it can be a bad sector on HDD.

Sectors are reallocated when they’ve gone bad (a hardware fault on the drive). Modern drives are built with spare sectors precisely for this purpose, but a large number of reallocated sectors indicates that there is a more serious problem with the drive and it is likely to fail soon. This is also likely to contribute to the slowness of your PC.

Alternatively you could try running the DLG(Data Lifeguard Diagnostics) for your HDD just to double confirm on that. Here is the link on how to do so:
http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=4rQJdl

The best option now is to backup all your data from your HDD if possible before it fails catastrophically, and if the HDD is still under warranty, then you can proceed to RMA it.

Hope you find this information useful, good luck.

Hey there Maxieos

I would rather say that both feed the same purpose which is to run a test to determine the HDD status. SMART test is more to like checking all the hardware whereby the DLG is more specific in HDD. With the DLG you can run more than just a SMART test which is the EXTENDED TEST.

This test performs a Full Media Scan to detect bad sectors. This particular test may take several hours to complete depending on the size of the drive but then it will give you a full review on your drive.

internally it is using Toshiba 5400rpm hard disk. performance is same as any other USB3.0 external drives in the market.

2.5" external hdd usually uses 5400rpm hdd due to less power consumption that suits USB 500mA specs, 7200rpm drives usually consumes around 700mA. even if it spins at 7,200rpm, it will still be bottlenecked by USB interface, therefore makes no difference in this aspect.

well if it's a single 4tb (i'm guessing internal drive), then just install into your pc. for things like NAS, i'd only ever recommend 4bay-6 bay at most, and even then using proper NAS hdds, which i doubt yours is. not to mention i doubt you'd want to spend rm2xxx-4xxx just to buy a NAS).

If you want portable storage, you could get an single drive external hdd casing to bring it around with you. But seeing as you only have 500gb in your desktop, i think it's still better use as an internal hdd.

That said, your system looks very ancient. I understand your a basic user.... but....

any chance you'd be willing to upgrade to skylake ? (this is the current pc architecture just released this year)

get the cheapest i7 cpu (if you really want to go cheaper theres i5, but i don't recommend that), motherboard, compatible ddr3 for the motherboard. Budget around 2-3k myr  nod.gif

PS: your english is fine, i understand you perfectly :} Is okay if you want to speak in bahasa, cause people for sure will know how to speak in our nation tongue  smile.gif

thank you very much for your reply...

as a normal user, i dont think i want to use the NAS technology and other advance technology... i just love to read about technolgy but dont have enough money to try use it...... huhuhuhu..

some time if i use my friend powerfull computer that i help him to buy because of my little knowledge, also i dont know what to do to maximize it power... i dont play games, dont know much about video ,picture editing... so my ancient system is far enough for now, maybe in future i will upgrade...

wd 4tb black is for video processing, gamers...new price is about rm800... normal external casing is rm100... maybe i want to sell it when i get it next week.. i won it from amanz.my website..

confuse.. rclxub.gif
