Thanks for your reply.

I'll consider the Sigma 18-50 f2.8, it looks like a perfect lens for traveling.

Which budget prime lens do you recommend for portrait if I want some sweet bokeh action?

Edit: Did not expect Sigma 18-50mm cost more than RM2000.  sad.gif
*
As trialgone said, RM2K ++ for a constant aperture zoom is not expensive, especially one that can come in that size. If you look at the Sony E 16-55 f2.8 price, you will know what I mean. The fuji counterpart (XF16-55f2.8) is around same. I would suggest you get this zoom first and use it for a few months and see for yourself which focal length you've used the most to take your portrait shots, then you can buy the prime lens with the closest focal length.

As regarding budget prime lens, you can choose from Sigma 30/56 or Viltrox 33/56. I would suggest you get the Sigma 30/Viltrox 33 first, since the focal length (on apsc) is more beginner friendly. Unless you really do a lot of outdoor portrait, 56mm is quite niche. The viltrox 75mm f1.2 trialgone mentioned no doubt is an excellent lens for portrait, but I won't even think about it if I were you. As a beginner, I would strongly advise you to master/or get used to the 56mm (on apsc) first before you think of anything longer. They are well known for collecting dust for a reason. tongue.gif Unless, you want to be a sniper brows.gif all the time, then it will be a different story.

Thanks all for the recommendations. I'm looking at Fujifilm X-S10 Mirrorless Camera now. It comes with XC15-45mm Lens Kit. What's your thoughts on this camera  🤔
Also came accross the Fuji XF 56mm f1.2 R lense, which might suit my intended usage for the bokeh effects.
The only downside is these aren't weather sealed.. any tips on the maintenance especially if exposed to some rain and extreme hot/ snowy weather?
*
I'm a fuji user myself. While I don't have the X-S10, I do have the XT3 which house the same sensor and processor as the XS-10. The colors straight out of camera for any fuji camera are usually very pleasing, which is what fuji is well known for. You won't go wrong with this camera.

As for the kit lens, while it is not bad, but I would advise you to get the camera body only without the kit lens and buy yourself the Sigma 18-50 f2.8. If you don't want to spend over 2k for the Sigma 18-50, you should at least get the 'better' kit lens, the XF 18-55 f2.8-4. The XF18-55 is also a variable zoom, but at least you get f2.8 at the 18mm, which can be useful for low light group shot without flash.

As for the XF56 f1.2 R lens, I also has one. The bokeh is nice, the lens is sharp even at wide opened (at f1.2). I shoot side by side with my friend against his EOS R + 85mm f1.8. The image produced by the XF 56 is sharper than my friend canon 85mm f1.8, but the bokeh is a bit more creamier on the Canon 85mm.

It is true that it doesn't has any weather sealed. But some minor rain drops/water splash won't really damage your lens so easily. I never had problems with the elements but then again, I seldom shoot outdoor. Even when I do, I never choose to shoot on a rainy day. If weather sealing is a top priority for you, then you go for the 56 mark 2 version / XF56f1.2 R WR (the WR suffix stand for weather resistance) , which has weather sealing, that cost almost 5K (as what trialgone was saying).

Having said that, I would suggest you to take a look at Sigma 56 f1.4. The lens is smaller, cheaper, focus faster and sharper than Fuji 56 (Mark 1). The only thing that it is inferior to the Fuji 56 is it's max aperture is at f1.4. The reason why I went with the Fuji 56 (mark 1) was because during that time, Sigma 56 wasn't available for Fuji X mount yet. If it was (back in 2019), I would had gone for the Sigma 56 instead of the Fuji 56.

If you haven't know already, all 3 models has the same processor and sensor. So image quality will be the same. As for best bang for buck, it will be XS10 since it is the only model that has ibis. As for the X100v, you can forget about it. Even if you can find the stock, it is already out of your budget.

Hi Sifu, phone photographer/videographer here.

Thinking to upgrade into camera.

Looking at Sony A6700 but undecided between the lenses, after filtering the lens, im currently looking at the below as my final decision. I like to shoot mixed stuff, potrait, landscape, wildlife and night shot, can any sifu give advice.

-Sony Kit lens 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 OSS (Ori Price RM 2,582 if buy with camera RM 2,100)
- Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 (Price RM 2,148)
- Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 (Price RM 2,947)
*
If you only do landscapre and portrait, I would suggest you to go for the sigma because of it's compact size. Judging for someone who come from phone photo/video graphy, my guess is that you will appreciate the compact size of the sigma lens.

If you think you don't want to miss out on wildlife, then the 2nd option is the Tamron. it has better reach than the sigma, but then again 70mm even on apsc is not that long for wildlife.

If you really dedicated about wildlife, then get the kit lens 18-135. But this is one I would recommend the least. There's a reason why it's called kit lens. Despite the range, the kind of photo it can get you doesn't defer much from your smartphone.

My suggestion is this. Instead of trying to get 1 lens that rule them all. I would suggest you get Sigma 18-50, get yourself familiar with the camera first. Later, If you think you really that dedicated for wild life, add a 70-300 in the future, which is much more useful in my opinion. If you still insist of 1 lens that rule them all, then get the tamron 18-300, you have all the range covered.

Thank you for the reply sifu! I actually went with Tamron 17-70mm/F 2.8 because of the extra range and also the built in lens stabilizer. I feel that the price range between sigma 18-50mm is almost similar to Tamron, only around RM 700 different.. So I decided to go for Tamron. Im very excited to jump into my first mirrorless camera photography/videography.. Hope this lens doesnt let me down !  thumbup.gif

It is a good choice. I was tempted to get the same lens for my fuji camera as well. But when I see the size of that thing I was like.... shakehead.gif

Hi all, I was previously a Canon EOS 550D user (Long time ago) and feel like picking up a Mirrorless Camera for Photo Shooting while traveling. I was looking around for Fujifilm XT-30 II as its aesthetic is really nice (silver color on top and black body gives the old school feel). However saw reviews saying that XT-30 II doesn't have sensor stabilization (compared to XS-10/XS-20 series). Should I have concerns over the missing stabilization feature?

Also, seems like all the stores are out of stock for Fujifilm XT-30 Series. Anyone have any suggestions which can get it in store? sweat.gif

For landscape and Travel photos, ibis doesn't really matter much. It's more critical for those who do handheld video yet doesn't want to use gimbal. When I first started with fuji I went with the XT20 silver also due to the aesthetic look, but be warned that silver paint get scratch easily. These days, it's hard to get a bad camera. Just go with the one you like the most.

Sony a6400 is an excellent camera, you won't go wrong withit. But for your budget, it would be hard to get even for a used one. If you really want to do portrait, get the Sigma 30mm f1.4 or Sigma 56mm f1.4 to make a different. The kits lens won't make much of a different against portrait taken using your smartphone.

Hi all,

I'm seeking advice on a mirrorless camera for travel and landscape use, I'm a beginner. I'm planning to buy a canon r50 with prime 35mm and 50mm lenses.

thanks in advance!

The problems with Canon RF apsc system is that, currently there is only 2 lenses. If you want to use prime lenses, you have to adapt the old EF lenses. Nikon Apsc is slightly better since they have viltrox prime lenses. I suggest you look at Sony or fuji apsc system instead. I do understand that canon camera has the most beginner friendly user interface, but they are not opened to 3rd parties and their own apsc dedicated lens option are worse than pathetic....unless you don't mind going for the dying eos M mount....

Why don't you use the RM2000 to top up your next phone purchases like getting the iphone 15 ? Your phone is with you everywhere you go, why do you bother to carry one extra piece of device that may not necessary be that much superior to your phone camera.

Just need a bit of clarification abt getting an iPhone for photography instead of a camera. Then in your experience what type of photography where a camera's advantage will be very obvious compared to a phone? I take alot of travel photos and am always wondering if a camera would give me a sharper, crisper and more depth photos. Am thinking of getting a camera but not sure if it will indeed be an upgrade
*
If you want to take photo mostly for travel then u already has the best camera with you. Phone camera has very deep depth of field, so everything you take in your photo will be sharp in focus. The bigger camera can provide you with much shallower depth of field, so if you like those photos like outdoor portrait will blur background, then u can consider getting a dedicated camera. Another thing with a proper camera is that, the raw files has more latitude when it comes to editing. It is much easier to cover highlight and shadow from the raw files produced by camera with bigger sensor because they have more dynamic range.

One things that drive me crazy to no ends is that, beginners always think just getting a camera with kit lens can immediately see improvement of their photos from phone camera. But what makes the image is the lens, the camera is just the recorder of the image. Yet, they always set budget for camera body only. So, my question to you, if you want to buy a camera, are you ready to spend more for lenses. If not, you will be very disappointed if you get a camera with kit lens, because you won't see much improvement of photos taken with the kits lens against your phone camera.

On the other hand, many phone has build in software with AI that can help you take very nice photos with little to no editing at all. So, the thing you will spend to get a dedicated camera will not always be just money only. You need to spend time to learn and a lot of passion to continue despite failure to get the kind of photo that is better than your phone.

A lot of people not willing to learn or doesn't has such a strong passion for it. Therefore, most people buy camera, use it for few times, then let it sit on the shelf after the initially excitement subsided because phone always with you and lazy to make the efforts to bring an extra piece of gear out everytime. In the end, just sell the camera and go back to phone. I'm trying to save you and the others the hassle of going thru that cycle.

I bought a canon r50 with 35mm prime lens and I think I made a mistake, very limited to lense choices, the 70-200mm and 14-35mm cost a bomb.

Should I trade in for a Sony a6400 instead ?
*
The 35mm prime, you meant the full frame lens RF35mm f1.8? It will be around 56mm in full frame field of view. Aiyoo, you didn't do research first before you jump into the system kah ? It's a costly mistake. But yeah, you should trade it in for the Sony a6400, the e mount system has the widest lens selection.

The problem is I haven't had a dedicated camera before so I'm not sure what are the upside potentials. I do enjoy taking and editing photos. Camera phones also hv raw file setting. Is that the same as the raw file taken by a dedicated camera?
*
Yes, the camera phone raw is the same as raw files from camera. And you still haven't answer my question. Are you willing to invest in the lenses too ? If you do, then go ahead and get yourself a dedicated camera. If you just want to use the kit lens that comes with the camera, then I will tell you to forget about it and save your money to top up your next phone purchase.

Yea, im an idiot and naive. i thought the RF 35MM lens will suffice, i didnt know what genre  i like.Definitely is a costly mistake, the depreciation is  insane, almost 15% value. oh well, we learnt from mistakes.

Anyways, i thought of getting the A6600 or straight into A7iii instead?. both also almost 3 years camera.
*
Aiyoo, don't be so harsh on yourself, I won't call you an idiot, but lazy to do research la. tongue.gif As regards your question, I think there is nothing wrong to go either A6600 or A7III, again you need to know what you are dealing here. 3 years in camera term is still very new. Even older camera can take fantastic photos. Video wise is a different story la.

1. A6600 = apsc camera, it has 1.5X crop factor (canon apsc is 1.6x crop factor). So, 35mm lens will give you field of view of a 53mm in full frame terms. But the advantages of apsc are that, they are smaller, the lenses are smaller and also cheaper than the full frame lenses. They are very wallet friendly that's why usually beginners start with apsc.

2. A7III = full frame, so there is no crop factor, a 35mm lens will give you 35mm field of view. So, you won't be confused as to the focal length of the lenses you want to use. A7III might be similar pricing to the A6600, but be warned that full frame lenses are usually more expensive for the similar field of view. The full frame advantages over apsc is that, it is slight better noise at high iso setting and it has about 1 stop more shallower depth of field, which mean it gives more background blur. But that is only beneficial for you if you like to take portraits of people outdoor.

If you want to start with a6600, you may also later get the A7iii when u think you are ready to jump into full frame. You can sell the a6600 to fund the jump or keep your a6600 for better reach. On the other hand, you may want to start with A7III right away, so that you won't need to lose money again when u transition from apsc to full frame. It all comes down to your wants and your budget. All the best with your selection. thumbsup.gif

okay, i just check the A6600 and A7iii is almost double even after the trade in. My only option is A6400 with Sigma 18-50mm, also another 5 years camera.  How is the Sony 6400?. compared to R50 other then lens selection.

i really like my R50, its very user friend and up-to-date features but the RF lens selection is just...disappointing.
*
Yes, canon camera are usually very beginner friendly. If you really want to stick to Canon R50, there is a way to do so without costing you a bomb. that is to use adapters and buy old EF lenses. Any camera you buy that was produced in the last 5 years are really good. If the photo is no good, the problems is the user, not the camera.

QUOTE(Jchew57 @ Oct 13 2023, 02:47 PM)
Thanks for the advice, its like an endless rabbit hole.

I checked A6400 then top up a bit get A6600, then top up a bit  from A6600 get A6700.. endless rabbit hole lol.

so now, I'm thorn whether to straight jump to A6700 for future proofing.
*
That's the beginners mentality, always want future proofing. Just get what you can comfortably affort and invest the rest in getting good lenses. Even A6000 is still good despite it's age. There's a saying in photography world, you date the body but marry the lenses. Because we always change camera bodies but once you got good lenses, they stays.

If I were you, I will get the cheapest body, play with it and get familiar with using a dedicated camera first. Get your feet wet and know your stuff, only then you can decide later if you need those features that comes with latest camera. The A6400 is really best value for money camera body in my opinion.

And lastly, forget about future proofing, it is one of the most useless concept to apply to photography gears. Future proofing only make sense when you are buying computer/laptop because with new operating system, your hardware might not be fast enough to support it. As for the camera you purchase today, it won't suddenly slow down or stop working just because there are new camera came to the market.

I haven't really use an variable ND filter before, but have been eyeing for one for quite awhile. As a matter of fact, it went to my shopee shopping cart for a few times but never pull the trigger. The one that is affordable and yet has good reputation is the K&F concept variable nd....but to be honest, due to what lego warfare said about the shortcoming,I'm not too keen about them and just use high speed sync instead.

By the way, are you sure you need ND filters? As you said you're doing architecture and street photoshoot, i would think CPL filter is more useful to you than the ND.... hmm.gif

So, i might put it into the wishlist first.

Anyways, after getting 18-50mm F2.8 sigma, what do you recommend for the next lens? I'm beginning to focus on one genre such as street photography and sports (mountain bike)
*
The 18-50 f2.8 sigma is one of the best lens for street. Just one advice, try to restrict yourself to using 24mm or the 35mm focal length ONLY when you are doing street. If helps to train your photographic vision.

As for sport, you will need something telephoto. Depending on your budget, you may look at Tamron 70-180, Sony FE 70-200 F4, Sony FE 70-200 f2.8 GM.

Hmm.. I’m guilty of 50mm ( 75mm crop) and 35mm (50mm crop).I used these two the most.
When I said 24mm, I meant the 24mm of your Sigma lens. Because 24mm translate to 35mm Full frame. I'm sure many articles or videos will tell you, for street, the 35mm focal length is one of the best, that's why I've asked you to use 24mm.

I also tell you to choose 35mm, it is also because it will be translated to 50mm full frame, which is also quite frequently used by street photographers.

I don't really like to use 18mm unless I'm doing a very large group photos (which does happens when shooting friends from my church group). So, yeah, I won't promote to others a focal length which I don't like using myself. I hope that clear the doubts for you.

Hi guys,

I have a budget for Rm3k to spend on a camera and lens. This camera will be use mainly for macro photo to record and take photo of teeth for my patient.

It has to be easy to use, not much setting required to increase iso or aperture to get nice pic. It will be placed in a dental surgery room.

Really appreciate your advise as i did some research and the see the price is more than my budget 😅

It is possible la, just that you didn't know where to look.

Lens RM 1200

Body: RM 1500

The total package less than RM3K.

https://www.twodentists.com/mirrorless-camera-in-dentistry/

Main reason it have AF and quite easy to use, just it cost about 6-7k for that setup. What do you think?

It's a good setup, no worries. I'm just surprised that, your budget can expand from 3K to 7K, which is more than doubled... blink.gif rclxms.gif

guys anybody here used 50mm 1.2L ? i love the 50mm 1.8 but should i upgrade to 1.2L or better buy other focal length ?

One of the reasons why you love the 50 1.8 could be because of it's small size. I love it for that reason too. Once you slap that big chunk of glass infront of your body, you might not feel the same. To be honest, I think the 50mm 1.2 not worth your money. If you want to use it for portrait, I suggest you go for the 85 1.2L instead.

By the way, are we talking about EF or RF ? hmm.gif

If it is the EF 50 1.2, then boleh la...the price still acceptable...the RF 50 1.2 is totally not worth it.
