Your Location:   KL
Preferable brand : None
Type of photography u want to do :  Videography is the priority

Then RX100 it is!

Type of camera/lens/accesories : Compact mirrorless
Budget: Rm3-5K cheaper better as finance easier approve
Your Location: KL
Preferable brand : None
Type of photography u want to do : Photo & video prefer 4K since I got 4K TV
Any specific models in mind? : Fujifilm xt20, Olympus or Sony.
Any specific features u want? : Looking for a camera which is not bulky and easy to carry around for travelling purposes.

Currently using Canon EOS650. Too heavy when travel exspecially got 1 kid to carry

Do you appreciate the retro look? If you do, Fujifilm XT20. Come with touchscreen, easier to do focus pulling. On the side note, bewary of the much expensive fujinon lenses.
If you dont, get Sony a6500. It is true some may claim that Sony lenses are not cheap also, but mostly are cheaper than fujinon equivalent. On top of that, Sony apsc camera has more support from third party manufacturer such as sigma and tamron. If you can survive without the touchscreen(which I think is super useful for focus pulling) and ibis, then go for Sonya6300, which is cheaper than can also do 4k. All the best with your selection.

Hi all, need ur advice smile.gif

Type of camera/lens/accesories:  light weight camera for travel shooting
Budget: below 4000
Your Location: Kuala Lumpur
Preferable brand : any brand
Type of photography u want to do :travel landscape and portrait
Any specific models in mind? : Sony rx100 mkv (the price I found on 11street is 3.9k)
Any specific features u want? :light weight and wide angle
Description :currently I am using my iPhone x for photography, was thinking if I get a point & shoot will enhancement my photo compare to photo took from my phone. I used to have a Nikon D7000 but it is too heavy so I had gave up on bringing it to travel anymore
*
1) What is that can be accomplished with a point and shoot that cannot be done with your iphone X?
2) In what way a point and shoot will enhance your photos compared to the phone?
3) Do you think a point and shoot will inspire you to shoot more compare to your iphone X that is always with you?
4) Do you do post processing with those photos taken with your iphone X ?

I advise you take time to think of those questions I posted above. Chances are, you will find that you might not need a point and shoot afterall, since it could be just a sudden G.A.S* attack.

p/s: Point and Shoot camera business segment are almost entire wiped out by smart phone for a good reason.

*G.A.S = Gear Acquiring Syndrome.

Hi, I'm looking to upgrade my current Canon EOS 60D camera. I initially wanted to get a 7D m2, but I have heard people saying that the 80D is better than the mark2... Can I get some opinions from people here please. Thanks guys.
Type of camera/lens/accesories : DSLR camera

Budget : RM5000 +/-

Your Location : KL

Preferable brand : Canon

Type of photography u want to do : Portrait

Any specific models in mind? : 7D Mark2 & 80D

Any specific features u want? : not really, but would be up for recommendations.
*
I'd say get the 80d and save yourself some money for new lens or accessories. Get the mark2 if you do a lot of sport or birding.

I was gonna suggest Sony a6000....but taking a second look on your budget, I suggest you go for Sony a5100 and get yourself some macro extension tubes or Raynox DCR 250 macro closeup lens.

Thx for your suggestion. But I forgot to mention compact and portability is also on my wanted list.

Sony a5100 is very compact hence it is very portable. And the screen can flip all the way up so it is good for vlogging. If u want, u can check out the size of it at Great Wall camera shop at padungan street. If they dont have a5100 for display, u can look at the sony a6000/6300/6500. They are good references as regard the size. As for best price, you can try lazada. I got 99% of my photography gears from lazada with their coupons, which hardly comes by these days.

What do u mean by grey import? I think you meant local sellers and foreign sellers right? To answer your questions, yes, I bought from both. Why, I always buy from the cheapest source regardless the origin of the seller. Some how, for my case, the camera body, lenses, they are cheaper with local sellers. Of course, whenever I can go with a local seller, I will because of the benefit of the warranty. As for other accessories like flashes, light stand, diffuser, gels, backdrop from china seller because as u said, much cheaper. So far, EVERY ITEM i ordered came thro, no problems at all. thumbup.gif

QUOTE(Genexil @ Aug 24 2018, 02:28 PM)
Hi, posted this awhile back  biggrin.gif
After more research I have narrowed down to Canon 200d and Sony a6000.

Here's what I got so far:

Canon 200d
-small for dslr
-articulating screen
-higher resolution screen
-longer battery life (650 shots)
-optical viewfinder
-external mic input
-slower burst shots (5fps)
-slightly more expensive than the a6000

Sony a6000
-smaller and lighter than 200d
-bigger image sensor, thus better low light
-faster burst shots (11fps)
-price slightly cheaper than 200d
-no mic input, but can use sony mic with horseshoe
-shorter battery life (360 shots)
-overheating when shooting videos

I'm leaning more towards the 200d, since its quite small for a dslr & almost the same size as the a6000 (but thicker) plus more features but I would like to know what you guys think. Should I go for it or the a6000?

My uses are still the same, for travel photography, and occasional vlogging.
Thanks
*
QUOTE(sp6068 @ Aug 31 2018, 11:31 PM)
U cant really vlog with the A6000. The screen can twist and turn like the 200D to see yourself when holding handheld to shoot video. Stick to the 200D.

U get more variety lens choices, can even slap a pancake lens for vlogging. Another camera you can consider is the canon M50. This mirrorless camera has the ability to shoot 4k videos(cropped) about the same price range as the 200D
*
@genexil, I agree with sp6068, take a good look at the M50, I think it's better option than the 200d. However, if you have to really pick between the 2 options you've listed, I said go for 200d. Canon color science are much better than sony especially when it comes to skin tones. My opinion anyway.

Your Location: Sabah
Preferable brand :  Canon
Type of photography u want to do :  Events, outdoor and weddings and occasionally some videos

Any specific models in mind? :  Any, canon 6d?
Any specific features u want? :  Any

I'm not sure if i can get a FF setup with this budget since I am very interested in the 24 - 70mm F2.8 but i have read somewhere that for a crop sensor, a 17-55mm F2.8 is the equivalent. I am planning on getting a used FF body and lens but if rm4k is still not sufficient then i will settle with an APS-C.
*
RM 4000 is impossible for any full frame coupled with 24-70. Just to give you some perspective.

Canon 24-70 f2.8 is already at RM4166

Sigma 24-70 f2.8 is already at RM5640

Tamron 24-70f2.8 priced at rm 3850

All the above prices are taken from www.shashinki.com. I know there prices are a bit high, but they serves as good references. And those are just lenses, cheapest canon Full frame body Canon 6D II cost about RM6100. So, you're looking at at least RM10,000. Even if you go for used market, RM4000 is extremely hard with that kind of budget for fully functional and fungus haze free units. Having said that, I'd very very happy to be proven wrong thought. I strongly suggest you start with apsc camera first to see if photography is your cup of tea, if not, you can always sell it and suffer less burn with apsc system compared to full frame.

Your Location:   KL citayy
Preferable brand :  Nikon/Sony
Type of photography u want to do (read:aspirations) :  Wide range, from landscapes/nature, tight macro shots, food photography, and press photography as im working in the industry ie; VIP doorstopping, rallies, demonstrations, and the usual press conferences, mugshots, non-jedi level sports photography.
Any specific models in mind? :  Conflicted between getting new or used bodies, so recommendations on model types would be appreciated. Eyeing the Sony A6000/ Nikon D5500 and above. Preference is towards Sony and Nikon's composition more than other brands.
Any specific features u want? :  Quick bursts, Sony a6000 and above's 11fps is very seducing, and acceptable composition in low light.

Backstory: Been using a Canon Powershot G12 for aeons, looking to upgrade and hone my skills on an interchangable lens camera, as some yearnings of photo quality is just unachievable through the lens of a smartphone
Dillemma: Choosing whether I should go for a cheap used body and lens set to basically go through the pains of experimenting with the manual settings and learning the essentials of aperture, exposure, and shutter speed, OR, invest in a new pretty good mid-tier body which i can trust will accompany me for at least 5yrs or so.

Dear Sifu,

Appreciate if you can give some suggestion. Wifey wanna start a hobby in photography.

Type of camera/lens/accesories : Thinking to get A6400, do appreciate if there's other better alternative
Budget : Less than RM3500
Your Location : Perak
Preferable brand : Any
Type of photography u want to do : Pets/Wildlife, Food, Videos on Food and Woodworking
Any specific models in mind? : A6400
Any specific features u want? : Does not overheat. Cause we plan to do video too. Read that A6000 will overheat after 30 min.

Appreciate your suggestion! smile.gif
*
For less than RM3500, body only or with kit lens? If Body alone possible. If you are getting it with kit lens, RM3500 might not be possible. Is the front facing LCD important to you ? If it is, a6400 is good. But you can also look at Fujifilm XA7 and also the newly released XT200. Both with fully articulated touchscreen, good for vlogging. The XA7 might be more budget friendly for you. On top of that, fujifilm are famous for it's straight out of box pleasing colors, especially eterna film simulation which is designed for video.

If the flip out screen is NOT important to you, you can look at older model such as Sony a6500, Fujifilm XT2 (no touch screen), fujifilm XT20 which are more budget friendly now and they are still very capable. Or even canon eos M50. I think canon camera are usually very user friendly toward beginners.

Hi sifus,

I dunno shit about camera, but deep inside I am pretty interested in photography. Previously while traveling and occasional point & shoot, only been using a camera phone and up to a point where I think I might as well trying to do it properly.

Never before handling a camera, but I hate the idea of bulky DSLR. Looks hipster and maybe too.. showoff too. Wanna avoid that image publicly. So maybe a mirrorless a better choice for me?

Also, another issue, even if I settle down with a camera, another major issue is I don't know jack shit about lenses. Urgh.

So I think I might ask here first, before being stupid and waste thousands on something overkill or not suit my need.

Any input is very much appreciated.

Type of camera/lens/accesories : compact, unlike DSLR. Easy to care and carry with.
Budget: 2k or less, preferably with lens and accessories.
Your Location:   Klang Valley area
Preferable brand :  Sony.
Type of photography u want to do :  Stationary video, ambulating video (with gimbal), general photography of pets, and scenery.
Any specific models in mind? :  Been eyeing A6000. Not sure if it suits me.
Any specific features u want? :  Any extra features to make it more convenient for vlog is much beneficial.
*
For RM2000 or less, Sony a6000 (with the 16-50 kit) fit the bill. But, if you want to see substantial differences in term of quality from your smartphone photo or video, you need to spend more by getting at least a decent lens. If not, you rather use that money to top up your next smart phone purchase. Without a good lens, many has been disappointed from their camera purchase and end up not using it, collecting dust at home or sold at a huge lost. Don't repeat their mistake.

If you really want compact, then Sony RX100 series. If you are willing to reconsider interchangeable lens system, I would suggest Sony a6300+ Samyang 12mm or Fuji XT20 + Samyang 12mm. The reasons being that they give you room to grow. You never know in the future that you might want to venture further into photography and both the 6300 and XT20 give you the room for that. They both give you 4k video and + lens should be under RM3K used.

Hi sifu and professionals, I’ve just started record videos for youtube and would like some recommendations to UP my video resolution game (I want to achieve the video quality similar yo when Daniel Shiffer/Peter Lindgren do tutorial/talking video, i have Final Cut Pro X to do the editing and color grading)

Type of camera/lens/accesories :  DSLR / Digital Camera
Budget: RM 2000 but flexible
Your Location:   KL
Preferable brand :  Canon/Nikon/Sony (flexible)
Type of photography u want to do :  Selfie video (for youtube educational tutorial video where i sit infront of camera on a tripod and talk for about 1-2 hour per session; i want a camera that has a flip screen to see my recording view, and maybe a 3.5mm jack to fit my Boya M1 mic or a holder for future shot gun mic; I want the video to be able to focus on my face automatically (mainly 1080p, 30fps) and slightly bokeh blur on my background
Any specific models in mind? :  Dont have specific, but i saw youtubers recommend the Sony Alpha series seems decent, but im a total noob in this
Any specific features u want? : i dont really use it for outdoor, in future might want to use it when travel overseas, but for now mainly just for video recording purpose (indoor lighting). Also if sifu can recommend a good lighting combination that will be great
*
If you want camera with RM2k budget that has flip screen, the only one I can think of is Canon eos m50. For bokeh, you need to have lens with big aperture. For that, I would recommend the Sigma 16mm f1.4, but that is additional cost around rm1700. As regard lighting, you can take a look at this youtube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXe3rEWrDVg

If your budget can flex a bit more, I would recommend you to take a look at a6100, a6400. But both of them are above 3k

Hi I've seen quite some good review on the Canon EOS 200 D (Rebel SL 2), and it seems to fit every single aspect that I'm looking for (maybe except for budget). Not sure about the kit lens - do you have any thoughts on it?

I can stretch my budget to high-2k if needed.

Noted on the big aperture for high bokeh effect. Big aperture = wide lens right? Sry im a complete noob in this

It is interesting that you've made mention about the 200d. I happened to recommend that camera to a friend 2 days ago. Yes, it is an excellent camera. For starter, you can start with the kit lens first (18-55). Get yourself familiar with the focal length first and work your way up from there. If you need something wider, my recommendation is Tokina 11-16 f2.8.

Having said that, I'd still highly recommend you to look at EOS M50 (similar price point to the 200d). Because dslr (and 200d is a DSLR) in general is a dying breed. The future is mirrorless. If I"m not mistaken, the 1DX -Mark 3 should be the last dslr canon released. After that, the company will only make mirrorless camera.

Big aperture is not equal to wide lens. Big aperture lenses are those that comes with big F numbers, like F1.2, F1.4, F1.8 and F2....being smaller the number, bigger the aperture.

Wide angle lens are lenses that has focal length that is 16mm or less (for apsc sensor)

For your usage (vloggin and youtube content), I think the lens that best suit your need is the Sigma 16mm f1.4. It is wide enough and yet, give you the f1.4 big aperture to blur abit your background. Noticed that I said blur a bit is because generally, for wide angle lens, you can't get too much blur background. Blur background usually achieved using long focal length like 30mm above. But that focal length would be not suitable for vlogging.

For fast moving object and function well in low light, you might want to get a dslr. Canon M50 may not cut it....you can look to canon 6D mark 2 with your budget.

I am looking for an entry-level but excellent mirrorless camera. I have done up some researches and so I kinda know the difference between full frame and APS-C lens. I obviously prefer the full frame since I will be shooting and recording underwater as well therefore a better image quality is preferable, but it is way more costly than APS-C lens. Also I, am not planning to upgrade my camera body for a long time once I get it. So can anyone please advise whether I should go for full frame or APS-C lens? Is the image quality difference huge?

Thank you!

The image quality difference is very minimal. Usually you can only see the differences if you zoomed in at least 100%. I would advise you to get into something like Sony a6400 and save your money for good lenses. The reason to go for sony is that you have the upgrade path from APSC to Full frame in the future. If you go canon eos M6II the mount is totally different from the EOS R and RP mount. OTOH, if you have the money to go FF body + lens, then go straight into FF. Any FF of those you've listed above is more than capable for underwater photography provided u can get the housing.

Hi everyone!

I'm interested in learning more about photography since end of last year when I helped a family member to take pictures during their ROM. Quite happy with the results.
Type of camera/lens/accesories : Mirrorless Camera
Budget : Preferably between RM2000-RM3000+)
Your Location : KL
Preferable brand : Canon/Sony/Fujiflim
Type of photography u want to do : Landscape, Portrait, Food, Product, My Cat and other random stuffs, which includes video.
Any specific models in mind? : Canon EOS 50M, Sony A6000/Sony A6400, Fujiflim XT100/XT200.
Any specific features u want? : Not to bulky room to be able to change lens if I want to pursue this further. Thus cost of lens would come into consideration.
I have a old Canon camera but I rarely use it as its getting blurry.

Thank you!

If you want to get Sony, at least the a6400, the a6000 is really dated at this point. If you want to go for fujifilm, at least get a XT20/30 body. IF you really wanted the flip out screen, then the XT200 is fine. Just don't go for the XT100 no matter how cheap it is, unless you going to get it for free. The AF is really slow on the XT100.

Hi folks, I already own gopro and now looking for mirrorless for good quality pics, which camera brand are suitable for hikers or 4x4 traveler?

we usually drive all types of terrain, trails to waterfalls or camp near river. Would like to shoot sunrise, sunset, gang members and mountain view, most importantly how you guys protect camera gear to get dirty? because harsh and wet area will damage camera optics right?

And which camera brand are reputable on after sales service? Likes grpro malaysia which they very honored their warranties. thanks!

Seriously, I think the gopro you already have suit you the best. If you really want to go mirrorless and warranty is your top concern, then go for a Sony camera. They are better than other brands such as nikon, canon, fuji, panasonic is simply because you can almost find a Sony service center in every big cities throughout Malaysia. As for other brand, their service centers are usually located in KL only.

If you want your camera gears to withstand wet environments, make sure you buy camera and lens with weather sealings.
