Firstly I am not a camera person and has never own a camera before.I usually just use my ip4.But I am going to be travelling a lot next year so I think it's time for me to get a camera.I am the ultimate noob when it comes to photography.I am looking for a good travel zoom camera that is easy to carry around. After a few days of research, from what I can see Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V seems to be the best choice. Is there any other recommendations?I am currently in the States now.My budget is around 400 USD.

See the above post...

So... imo.

Canon 600D (cos got flippy screen=less backpain when on tripod and cheaper than 650D) or Nikon D3100/3200 with 18-55mm kit and keep the balance for ultra wide angle len (UWA) like a 2nd hand Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6.

i surely appreciate ur opinion. and seriously considering ur reconmendation. thanks. i might be getting d3200 and try research more on the lens u mention there =)

Tripod's are to your own preference. When in use, the heavier, sturdier tripod and ball head is preferred but when lugging it about....its hateful. So see your own tolerance lo.

Got ur pm..

Check out this thread http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2409384

In short.. just gotta make up your mind on which system (canon, nikon, sony, pentax etc) that you prefer by:

1) Checking out the ergonomics of the camera. Each brand does their interface, grip etc differently.
2) Will you be shooting with your friends? Which system are they using.

Regardless what you choose, even the most basic dslr does a darn good job. Moving up the price ladder just purchases extra conveniences.

Heck most folks won't be able to tell if a picture's taken with a D3100 or a 7D.

Lens however, is much more important than the camera.

I think the standard answer for this is one of those enthuasiast RAW shooting compacts like S100, LX5, XZ-1 etc since you're a dslr shooter.

Most run of the mill ones suffers from lost of details and smearing to compensate for small sensor... among other things. With RAW... at least got fighting chance to recover tongue.gif

If you are going for Nikon, get D7000 or higher, then you will gain autofocus on all lenses (except some very old ones)
OR get AF-S lenses if you get model ranked below D7000.

Or...... wait for the new Canon EF-M also that has just been announced on Monday!

You can see Canon lenses priced under RM1000 at http://www.mylensdb.com/gear/find?price=1000&mount=1
Just play with the search options, tweak the brand, price and you can get an idea on lenses to get.

NEX-F3.. got flip up screen for self portrait.

Some say C3 is smaller but its just the camera body that's smaller which is USELESS considering how big is the lens. They both take up the same space in the bag.

Been using xz-1 for a year, xz-1 gave me a lot of satisfied photos. My gf wanted a camera and I told her why not use xz-1 I get new hahahha! Evil.

I like the image from xz-1, the colors are quite nice, the wide aperture, quite pocketable, art filters.
Yesterday shooting with sunset as background, I use M, 1/1600, F5.0, ESP metering, with 1/16 flash fired.
What's the normal setting for shooting portrait with bright background?

For the new camera I wanted
1. Better ISO performance, xz-1 photos often looks like painted even with low ISO
2. HD Video recording, xz-1 video is too crappy, soft.
3. Faster autofocus
4. Faster startup and doesn't hang like my xz-1 did.
5. Good jpeg image quality straight out from camera, doesn't fiddle with raw too much

Currently tempted to buy either nex7 or om-d, but not much image quality gain right compare to nex-5n/f3 or ep-3, those are more pocketable but actually none of them can be carry in a pocket xD
