pkgbackup only backup the list of Cydia apps/tweaks installed and repos. Those list can be exported to dropbox/sugarsync etc, saved in adressbook and so on. The actual apps/tweaks won't be backed up.

How it works:

1. Aptbackup backup the list of apps/tweaks and repos
2. You chose where to put the list
3. Upgrade or restore the phone
4. Jailbreak and install Cydia
5. Install Aptbackup
6. Restore the list
7. Aptbackup will reinstall back all the apps/tweaks thats on the list

good one ... I agree with all

I understand all , except the last one.

reinstall back from where ?

from server (redownload everything ??) ,

from iphone ( it is not possible as during upgrading, old files have been removed),

from computer - this is the most possible way. But when cydia files are saved to computer? (during syncing and backup ?) Through what ? (itune ? .... ?) To which directory ?

Reinstall back by aptbackup on your phone as if you go in Cydia and install one by one the old apps/tweaks that you had installed before upgrading.

That's the use of aptbackup, automate the installation of previous installed apps/tweaks

OMG ... you mean redownload again ?

i understand what you said with "automated installation" .. but my question is where is the installation files comes from ? Upgrading will remove all files first then replace with new one.

I know after jb, i must install aptbackup first then it will restore my previous apps. My question is where aptbackup gets the installation files from ? From server , iphone or computer ??

--

with pkgbackup, the last prompt command is " Remember to sync with iTune to keep an extra copy of your backup data on your computer!" ... i thought, iTunes will save cydia files on computer so that the saved files will be transferred back to iphone when restoring.

Okay! So Cydia's Aptbackup somehow works like Dropbox. Even if it's uninstalled, once install back all the uploaded files remains where it should be.

No idea. That's for my own understanding. Have to wait for frozz's proper explanation.

Haiya .... how to explain aaaa.

Aptbackup only backup the List of apps/tweaks with the repos, not the apps itself. What "Remember to sync with iTune to keep an extra copy of your backup data on your computer!" means that if you chose one of the method to save the list as a contact, the list will be saved within your contact. Remember ... the list only and not the actual app.

Aptbackup only automate the installation based on the list of previously installed apps. To make it simple,

without aptbackup
1. you have to copy all your apps/tweaks/repos names on a piece of paper or somewhere
2. Upgrade the firmware
3. Jailbreak
4. Open cydia, put in all the repos manually
5. Find each one of the apps you previously have and install one by one

With Aptbackup
1. Backup the List and chose to save as contacts, save in sugarsync/dropbox or email
2. Upgrade/restore firmware
3. Jailbreak
4. Install Aptbackup
5. Import back the List
6. Restore back all the package or select which one you want to install <--- this is where the automation comes within aptbackup where it will reinstall back all your apps or selected apps

Clear?

Added on March 20, 2012, 2:12 pmAnd yes ... all the apps are redownloaded back again. The only thing is that you don't need to reinstall back everything one by one manually

Both APTbackup and PKGbackup works on the same principle. PKGbackup has an option to save the list into dropbox, otherwise it will save the list of tweaks in the contacts application (if you scroll the contacts, you will find one contact with gibberish name. )

APTbackuo does the same thing, it will save a list of your tweaks (the tweak name, the repo where the tweak is downloaded from) and it will save it in a note file. I am not sure where the note file is saved but I'm sure google will let me know.

This note file will be backed up via the normal iTunes backup process.

Once you wipe your iPhone clean and upgrade etc, your jailbreak will be gone. Once you restore the backup file the note (for Aptbackup ) or the contacts (for PKGbackup ) will be restored to the phone as well.

Now the next process is to jailbreak the iPhone (if there is a jailbrek for that particular firmware laaaa). Once the iPhone is jailbroken, cydia would be automatically installed.

The next process is to manually download either PKGbackup or Aptbackup. This is the only manual thing you have to do.

After either PKGbackup or Aptbackup is installed, the app will automatically look for the restored contacts or lists. Once it finds it, all you have to do is press the restore button and PKGbackup or Aptbackup will automatically try and download all the tweaks you had before based on the lists.

That is the concept for both program.
