The very normal example of marketting hype and tactics.
Just simply basing an SSD performance on read/write speeds is honestly, one of the worst ways to compare performances.

There are alot of other variables.
The Vertex 3 and Intel 520 are SF-based drives, obviously under incompressible data they're faster.
When it comes to compressed data, you'd see they drop more than half of their advertised speed, where as the Marvell based or Samsung's own controllers doesn't change its performance much (if at all, really in real-world situations I'd be surprised you can notice it).

Do more research on SSDs.
They're just like CPUs in-terms of marketing "the more the better" doesn't mean it really is faster.
no time to research due to project deadline =(
tats y i come here to ask

from wat u explained
SF based drives is fast for incompressible data and normal for compressed data
while Marvell based drives is normal for both data

so still SF based is better?

you dont just look at what controller they have(indilinx,sandforce,marvel,etc2..),but also what type of NAND do they combine it with for example toggle,synchronous,asynchronous..a lot of reading if really wnat to know what kind of ssd is the best.i'm no pro myself as i'm still learning bout this ssd technology.

Initially I was interested on the Intel 520, but after reading further, it still doesn't solve the irrecoverable performance issue. So do you need to perform a secure erase to restore it to it's original performance? As with the current intel x-25m, it does restore to original performance after you perform a full format.

Yeah, just finished imaging my RAID 0 SSD from my previous RAID 0 HDD. Got Windows Experience for Data Transfer 7.9. Gonna do some benchmark and some optimization from Sean's Windows 7 Install Guide & Optimization for SSDs/HDDs. Put me on the Owner List for Corsair Force GT 120GB X 2 RAID 0.

hmm besides slower R/W speeds, any downside of using SATA3 ssd in a SATA2 slot?

i'm planning to get my second corsair force3 120GB for my sata2 lappie since pricing of sata3 & sata2 ssd is quite similar

thanks for your time smile.gif
I pick a SATA 3 SSD if I have a SATA 2 controller just because it's a newer drive with newer tech.

I wouldn't say SF based drives are the best?
They're the fastest, that's a given... but honestly, I'd still take the Samsung 830 for a more balanced performance throughout all kinds of different scenarios, eventhough it isn't as fast.

If you want the absolute fastest, SF drives.. atleast for now, is still the fastest.

personally not very confident in samsung ssd =x
their hw is great but their sw sucks, especially in providing firmware update (smartphone)

anyway
why mushkin chronos 240gb is much cheaper than others 240-256gb range ssd?

The software has been absolutely fine to me.
You can always manually update the firmware if you hate their firmware utility.

If that's your qualm and it is such a deal breaker for you, get a Crucial M4 then.
They perform similarly to the Samsung 830, trading blows and even somtimes outpacing the 830 too.

Mushkin has always old its stuff cheap in the US.

I've done a bit of Google.
People over Dell forum discussed that maybe its an OEM product that's why Samsung SSD Magician unable to detect it as an actualy Samsung product.
I'm not sure how big will improve for firmware update, but since I cannot do anything, I'm cool with current firmware, and its performance.

i dont know much about SSD but i think firmware update is very important to SSD
if the current release of firmware wont giv much performance boost, what about the next, next next update?
ur problem must be fix asap, hopefully samsung wont treat it like treating their smartphone firmware

Usually you can just download the firmware, then place it onto a USB drive and then flash the SSD through BIOS.
But now... uhm, it seems the software can't detect your SSD at all? hmm.gif

Afaik this will happen after a firmware update. Most prolly need a special firmware from Intel to clear off the SMART Attributes, which is not possible for end users unless RMA.

Could you install OS on it & is there any error msg poped up during operation? What abt running Intel SSD Toolbox Fast Diagnostics scan & Full Diagnostics?

Installing windows without error msg . sometime , some windows error appear due hard disk problem and your data may be lost. (will p.screen when it pop up) .. fast diagnostics scan can be done without error but Full Diagnostics sometime it cannot be complete and a red msg appear

Attached Image Attached Image

p/s : will upload Full Diagnostics scan

Newbie here. Seek for advice to buy Intel 320 40GB or OCZ Agility 3 60GB. Budget very tight :(
