Too. Many. Sales. tongue.gif

Anyway, to bring the DRUMMING back into this thread;

Recently, I've been listening to a lot of music like Periphery, Animals as Leaders and Threat Signal, mostly because of their guitarists (recently, I've been focusing a lot more on my guitar work, since I can play/record at home, whereas I can't with drums) and as usual, slowly I started drifting towards their drummers, and I've realised something; which is that all (or most) of these incredibly complex drummers, play open handed and can lead with both sides, on both left and right, hands and feet. Basically, ambidextrous.

Personally, I've never taken the idea of open handed drumming very seriously in my own playing, except for some rare use when I'm playing blast beats or when I'm playing intricate ride patterns and I use hats on both hands to spice the accents and dynamics up. However, after watching all these drummers, some barely a few years older than me, doing all this crazy stuff, I've impressed on myself that I need to go and try to master this art of open handed ambidextrous drumming. How I'll be able to practice, I have no idea. But I'll start with trying some basic beats at my next band practice.

Basically, I feel that playing open handed may open up some leeway in your playing, and being able to lead with all your limbs will definitely do wonders for your playing; four way coordination, anyway tongue.gif

For those of you that are new to the concept, here are some examples:

Alex Rudinger

Carter Beauford

Travis Orbin

We've also got a couple of Malaysian drummers who do this, I can't remember who though. :/
