Tiger shrimps is under Caridina ,same family as CRS , so requirement maybe the same, if it cheap to buy, worth a try.sometime you just need to try before you know like I'm now try keeping Caridina dennerli with active soil at PH6.6~6.8 with Neocaridina Shrimps for 2 week, they seem happy but still not confirm successful yet. I saw 2rm for 2 at scott garden. yes, that snail is friendly, this indeed a planted tank in the beginning but converted to shrimp tank.I also want ask, why use ADA soil for a shrimp tank when it is known for ammonia spike + if it is not a planted tank. ADA soil can be use for shrimp tank if you know how and have patient for it to mature. Reason ppl use ADA for shrimp tank cos 1) it like 2 in 1, good for plant and keep fauna that prefer soft water. 2) it is easily available , priced moderate, can buy in loose pack as well. 3) lfs recommend it. 4) ADA name sound good. 5) They under estimate ADA soil ammonia leeching period(or just don't know) 6) They like the soil color and texture. 7) Ppl using it with success in their shrimp tank(but they don't know it take huge time/patient and some casualty for the soil to settle/safe). 8) ..... |

QUOTE(Goldiger79 @ Jul 18 2012, 10:35 AM) 5) mean the time for the ammonia to wear off is fast? Unless you put in lot of plant to suck up the ammonia , it took one or two month to cycle the tank for shrimp tank setup with new filter/media. Even with aged filter/media it may take at least 2 weeks to cycle, but the problem is ammonia still present and waiting to leech out from the under laying substrate, let say your substrate is 6cm thick, the first 1-2cm of the substrate may have the ammonia neutralize by beneficial bacteria when it leech, the things is if you have fish like to dig or you move stone/decor which embed in the substrate or you do vacuuming, ammonia from the bottom 4cm may leech out in huge amount which your bacteria may not able to handle and neutralize in time, then ammonia spike will occur. That why the most sensitive shrimps like CRS will perish first. For me to use ADA soil , i will laid around 3-5cm soil with lava rock/filter media at the bottom with shrimps soil additives. 1) Put powerhead and cover it with sock on the outlet. Let it run for 24-48hrs, after that water change 90%. 2) Install aeration and Light on for 24hrs daily. No fan or chiller. water temp above 29'c is preferred. Remove powerhead put in moss/plant and install aged filter/media(i normally over filter my tank) coupled with dosing 'Kick start bacteria' daily for one week, then WC 50%, after 24 hrs test nitrite, if zero half done. 3)Then proceed to vacuum the substrate for the first 2-3cm for few time in a week, will check for ammonia & nitrite on the 3rd week. If both ammonia & nitrite zero , tank is cycled and ammonia spike minimized but risk is still there. By now tank should have covered with brown algae and some green one on rock, put in 2 to 4 otto's and your first batch of 10 cheap RCS as guinea pig. Every weeks, vacuum the substrate abit and WC 30%. 4)Water PH maybe a issue here as it can go below 5.5 initially, i will put in one pcs RM0.50 old coin size coral stone in the filter to buffer. 5) Put in 100ml purigen in the filter to absorb organic waste and polish water. (active carbon can also be added). 6) Then the wait game begin..for the soil to mature. You may still experience shrimps dead in the process. |

QUOTE(arrow @ Jul 18 2012, 02:06 PM) No, not wearing off fast but the opposite, ADA soil especially new amazonia is nutrient rich, it just have tons of ammonia. Arrow bro, what about the 5 elements, if vacuum substrate, wont it vacuum the elements too?Unless you put in lot of plant to suck up the ammonia , it took one or two month to cycle the tank for shrimp tank setup with new filter/media.
