where is sifu arrow when we need him?
you can use holland sand (waterfall sand what did you guys call just now) for base. i already try lorr...shrimp live like normal..nothing happen..just their color not red enough...even NA have tank using holland sand and keep red cherry in it.
the darker soil/sand you put in, it will be more vivid in color. better use shrimp soil.
for what purpose we need to use shrimp soil??
- Beneficial bacteria will stay in soil
- soil will maintain the pH that it should be. - shrimp will be more striking color.
that's the purpose of using shrimp soil.
some shrimp need lower pH. some need high pH. so soil will help to
maintain the pH that u want.
eg. crystal shrimp need lower pH, while sulawesi shrimp need higher pH. if you want to keep red cherry shrimp, its ok to use normal soil. coz they can adapt with variable water parameter (just dont give them shock)
me not sifu, still long way to go...just sharing experience.

ok..so mostly u all buy the soil at where? LFS? or got member selling at here?
Before you start buying stuff, what shrimps you intend to keep? if just Neocaridina Shrimps, then it is more easy and cheaper as well.
Try to choose one type/color of Neocaridina shrimps for one tank as they will interbreed if you put in different color Neocaridina shrimps, and end up with 'chap ayam' color . Cherry or fire red Neocaridina is most common and easy to keep/breed.
Soil will help/determine how long you need to cycle your tank, as we all know ammonia is needed to kick start tank cycle for bacteria colonization.
If using only sand/stone/bare bottom, you need to supply the ammonia needed(using pure ammonia, decaying fish food or do a notorious fish in cycle), but with soil like ADA , ammonia is readily leeching out from the soil itself.
I had use ADA new amazonia , Benibachi shrimp soil, Contro soil , Fluval Stratum soil, Gex pure sand , Coral sand/stone as base for my shrimps tank. (i also have Gex green soil and nisso soil which i yet to use).
Imho ADA, benibachi , Contro soil more suitable for CRS and shrimps that require lower PH. Like Bro. Fishman case coral stone is added to increase the PH when using ADA soil.
Fluval Stratum soil provide the ideal PH of 6.8 - 7.0 from the start for Neocaridina Shrimps.
Except the first tank using ADA soil which i took almost 2 month to fully cycle(noob that time), all my current tank i cut short the
cycling time by at least 80% or have tank instance cycled by porting tank Filter/media/water/stone over.
If i will to suggest a shrimp tank for my friends(noob type) i will recommend him this:

Taken from
http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/...e-crayfish-cpo/just add in a decent hang on filter with media and fan, keeping & breeding Neocaridina Shrimps is no problem. Why? cos i have one myself
3rd generation shrimps growing in there now.
O. price is less then RM350 , Pet safari in ikano is selling. It come with 2kg Fluval shrimp soil, Fluval internal filter with spray bar(not 100% shrimplets safe), 11w hagen light, 30cm x 36cm x 30cm tank with background, anti-chlorine, Thermometer, GH up additives ,Fluval shrimp food, shrimps info guide manual and a cute shrimp net.
