PASIR GUDANG: A fire broke out onboard a 35-year-old Royal Malaysian Navy's survey vessel which was undergoing repairs at the Malaysian Marine Heavy Engineering shipyard here last night.

KD Mutiara, which is one of the two ships under the navy's National Hydrographic Centre, is believed to have suffered extensive damage.  However, no casualty was reported.

A spokesman for the Johor Baru Fire and Rescue Department said they received a call at 8pm. As at press time, the firefighters were still trying to put out the blaze.

Seven fire engines from several stations in the vicinity were rushed to the scene.

It is learnt that workers were carrying out welding works on  the ship when the incident occurred.

The ship, measuring 71m in length and 13m in width, was commissioned to the naval fleet in 1977, to carry out mapping work and general oceanography.

KD Mutiara is equipped with digital data gathering and processing systems, modern acoustic sensors and differential satellite position-fixing systems.

Armatac Quad-Mag

Armatac emailed me a photo of their new prototype Quad-Mag. The Quad-Mag is a 5.56x45mm quad stack magazine with a 60 round capacity.



It differentiates itself from other quadstack magazines by having two separate feed channels. When the first feed channel is empty, it switches to the other channel. Essentially its two 30 round magazines in a small package. This reduces jamming in the part of the magazine where quad stacks are reduced to a duel stack for feeding.

PICTURE & VIDEO: Lockheed delivers first two F-35Bs to training base

Lockheed Martin on 11 January delivered the first two F-35B short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) variants to Eglin AFB, Florida.

The aircraft, designated BF-6 (pictured below) and BF-8, are the first early production versions of the STOVL variant to arrive at the training base, joining six conventional take-off and landing F-35As.

Last July, US Air Force officials first said that three F-35Bs were scheduled for delivery to Eglin AFB by December 2011 to inaugurate the US Marine Corps' training operations. However, the USAF clarified shortly afterward that only one F-35B would be delivered before January.

But the two aircraft arrived 11 days after the start of the new year, flying into Eglin at 15:13 and 16:39, respectively.

The aircraft were ordered in 2007 under the second lot of low rate-initial production (LRIP). So far, Lockheed has delivered eight of the 12 aircraft in LRIP-2, plus both aircraft ordered from LRIP-1.

The F-35B remains under a loosely defined probation set last year by US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. Since that time, the aircraft has resolved three major propulsion system issues, and completed a shipboard landing demonstration on the amphibious carrier the USS Wasp last October.

we took hits from RPGs all the time and once even from a soviet recoilless gun,we lived

it depends on luck.RPGs are not accurate but a guy i knew got hit with an RPG to the chest. he was sitting in the  LAV's commander seat
