Wow at last official thread for 9790 is opened! I'm proud owner of black 9790.. smile.gif
Seems .528 has been released. I just upgraded .496 this morning.. doh.gif
For those who having problem installing new OS, follow this step.

1) Uninstall everything related with BlackBerry on your pc.

2) Install BlackBerry Desktop Software version 7.0.0.32 beta download link

3) Install the new OS on your computer.

4) Delete vendor.xml (usually located at C:\Program Files(x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader)

5) connect usb wit ur blackberry and run Loader.exe (located at previous folder)

6) wait till its done. finished!
The blackberry desktop software version 7 part really helped me completing the process because the current desktop software usb driver and apploader seems having bug during accessing boot rom.

alright...
There's a little option already ticked(apps already installed in my 9790)..not like the screen shot posted above(the unticked options..language etc.)
After I click the next button,"No actions are required." was stated there..then I click finish button,it finished just like that..no 5-10 minutes duration.
I got on my desktop the 6.1 version bb desktop software and it sure does recognised my 9790.
and..nope,this is my 1st time using BBSAK..
so...how eh??

Battery life better on SGS2 and of course the SGS II screen display thrump the mediocre 2.5" blackberry display
The BB is only good as a push email phone n messenger ; other than that its apps are generally mediocre and not much choice
I have also problem cannot update my OS to latest 528. I have no problem updating OS on my previous 9900 and 9860. I have removed all the BB OS and just installed only the latest 528 for the 9790. When I choose update - it says no update available. I tried to do it executing LOADER - it only display my list of apps and no option to update the OS

seems BBSAK cannot recognized your phone, so i wont suggest u to use BBSAK to update.. just use Blackberry Desktop Software..

ok.. firstly, uninstalled all BB OS in your computer, go to control panel -> Uninstall Program -> find Blackberry Device Software 7.00...for 9790[something like that] uninstall that..

then.. if you have CCleaner, run ccleaner and clean your computer.. OR just restart your computer

then.. can freshly install the .528

ok.. since you have backup your data... dont choose backup @ restore again in Loader apps [it will says recommended] .. just choose the non recommended options [there are two option, click the non recommended]

then. see how is it.. goes...

battery life definitely better than 9900 but cannot compete 9780/9700
although they both use same type of battery

my prediction -> with heavy usage [heavy BBM/heavy Browse/heavy Youtube/heavy Call/heavy SMS/heavy e-mail/ heavySocial networking] - can last around 6 - 9 hours in 3G mode , 10- 12 hours in 2G mode..

with moderate usage, can last more than that.. but definitely cannot reach more than 1 day usage [9780/ 9700 can]

can use.. but depend... which plan you mean...?

if the data plan means to be BIS, then.. the data plan not applicable for any non bb phones[you will be charged]

if you subscribe Digi Smart Plan RM 43 + RM 10[BIS], you can use the data plan which is 1GB[different from BIS plan though]

IF you want to use the prepaid BIS plan -> you cannot use the data in other phone....

my prediction -> with heavy usage [heavy BBM/heavy Browse/heavy Youtube/heavy Call/heavy SMS/heavy e-mail/ heavySocial networking] - can last around 6 - 9 hours in 3G mode , 10- 12 hours in 2G mode..

with moderate usage, can last more than that.. but definitely cannot reach more than 1 day usage [9780/ 9700 can]
*
after updated to .528,my 9790 fully charged at 0330 this morning..
and can stand till 1600,the battery left = 17%
*with 2G mode biggrin.gif

please bruce.gif all discussion regarding selling/buying things, you may need to proceed to the seller's thread or via PM

this thread is for discussion only ..

as for SP, you may use 9780 / 9700 screen protector as well,, it is well fit..

but if you still want the screen protector that is specially made for 9790 , better wait..

you charge through PC or using normal charger...?

seems that is a bug.. mind to update the firmware ..?? , update it to the latest [link @ first page]..

if it isn't a bug, suggest u to go to service center and change battery there..[free as if u are still on warranty]

Me and my friend are having this kind of issue too. We bought our unit together. Im not sure its really a bug or not. But I do update from original version (cant remember the number) to .496, then to the latest .528. The problem is still exist.

Sometimes it stuck at 93%. Then when you unplugged ur charger and reconnect it back it will charged up to 95% only. Never managed to fully charged whenever I use my USB cable. But If charge using Power Plug, sometimes can get 100%.

Anybody else having this issue?

Just got this Hard Shell by RIM from PDAexpert Mid Valley last night. Someone said they already sell it during the last Pc Fair for RM80. But because I bought it after PC Fair, they jacked up the price to RM99. But at last managed to bought it at RM90. Overall quite a good looking case eventho expensive!

Here are some pictures of the case:-

Yes kae7. exactly the same like your posted video. Now waiting for the original holster to come available.

The downside of using Hard Case is u need to press lock button every time you want to put your phone inside your pocket. If not someone might get a pocket dial from you ;p

I think RIM implemented this to prevent the battery from overcharging.

hi. i'm using 9790 too..

I just joined the bbm group from the front page. I was using 8520 before this phone.

Until now there are no big problem with the phone. the only issues is i can only charge from the wall until 95% and then it will stop charging. But if i charge from pc, then it can go to 100%. Anybody else having this problem? (i just bought this phone 2 days ago, haven't cycling the battery till almost empty)

btw sometimes the touch screen annoys me, when i'm typing, usually my forefinger touch the screen accidently and it will mess my typing. any good idea how to hold the phone and can type comfortably without touching the screen?

have u try connecting to other wifi..??

this is reception issues.. which can be solved by updating the OS..

try update to the latest OS., if the problem still persist.. just wait for the updated OS

if it still not software issues.. just need to check at service center[do that if it is not software/firmware issue]

get the best sfi and cod file from other firmware, and combined it in one OS.. -> that is hybrid..

that's why i prefer to straight update to the hybrid software rather than, changing one by one, COD or sfi files..

they declined me twice at Gardens and KLCC a day after i bought it.

after tweets to @maxiscomms , @maxislistens and a youtube vid, they finally accepted it.

then again they wrote "no fault found" on the RMA sheet.

lets see if they honor the repair arrangements.

And yeah, I have googled around. But would like to know from you all who have personally experienced it.

problems ??

no major problems.. so far so good...

just some minor problems...and it is depend

- battery issues[not long lasting, the percentage of battery not shows 100% although already charged more than 3 hours or more] not all set have this problem... try newer OS to reduce battery consumption[power]

- trackpad[some having this issues, loose and so on.. but it depend on the user too]..

- the size is small

- the position of screen and keypad too near.. for some people with big hand, might be hard for them to type[they may accidentally press on the screen..[LOL !]

that is some minor problem for some people only..

Thanks for the reply!

The battery not long lasting? How long can it last? I considered getting this over the 9900 because of the battery life. >.<

And yeah, read about the battery not showing 100% thing in the previous pages. Anyone tried getting it fixed? For example : Recalibrating the battery?

Anyway,
appreciate the feedback! Cheers smile.gif

Hurmmm thinking of going too.. Might also ring them up like kae7 sed.. But I wonder though, how loose is considered loose? Is it suppose not to be loose at all? Partially maybe over a period of usage? Is the centre in plaza berjaya still in operation?

hi there guys, am currently looking at either this or the 9900 but there is only one concern, the battery life...

my concern is that because I do tend to drift between areas with a massive variation in signal strength, so the main concern is that it will drain the battery while it attempts to search for data connections, whats it like on this phone?

am currently on android and the battery life sucks as it barely lasts a day, will there be massive drainage when fluctuating between data connections?

thanks in advance...

Loose trackpad is quite common actually. I buy used phones all the time and 3/5 of them have loose trackpad. It's something you have to live with or use your DIY skills to fix it.

Squeaky 'Q' can be fixed by changing the keypad. Or just live with it, no big deal.

Yeah, maybe you should. But the build quality of the 9790 isn't really that great compared to the 9900 or older Bolds.

yes.. you may backup all those things, please refer 1st page @ post #4 , after backup.. you can restore it back..

actually.. installing new OS maybe won't delete all data.. unless you WIPE your BB .. but it is better if you backup first...

after restore.. you dont need to add/approve again the contacts..

Finally manage to update my fw to 557 ; fail last time for 528
Just need to delete the hidden vendor file at user/blackberry/my name/AppData/Roaming/ResearchinMotion/Blackberry/LoaderXml

There was no need to delete this file for my previous upgrades on my 9900 and 9860

official OS contain original items/things that the specific original OS version have

while the hybrid OS is not same as official OS , it may contain things/items from several OS that has been combined to become the new OS / or .. just replace some items/things in the official OS with another version of official OS.

for example

OS V1 contain A,A and A
OS V2 contain B,B and B

hybrid OS, may contain A,B,A or B,B,A or something similar with that ..

there are also hybrid OS that contains the other phone's OS items.. smile.gif

the size is different because hybrid contains the list of items that you need to replace the original OS item,
it is not the installer...

you need to install the base OS 7.0.0.528 in your computer,
then download this , and replace all the items inside, to the required folder, I have give some tutorials on the first page on how to install these..

1. my question , what you want to do with that...?
do you mean to make your BB as a smart tag..?
the question --> how ..?

2. can only update it through PC / Desktop Manager if you use BIS ...
unless you have data plan / BES .. you may update OTA..

1. NFC has many use.. but it is only usable with NFC enabled deviced[of course]

In Malaysia , there are Maxis FastTap since 2009 , Visa PayWave, TouchNGo [not smart tag], Nokia thingy ,etc..

the thing is I still dont know what the function of NFC in Blackberry.. Blackberry need to provide/produce many things that the Blackberry can use...

we can see Nokia, they created/produce NFC speaker [yes any device with NFC can connect with it]

for now, i only can see the file transfer between Blackberry to other Blackberry through NFC.. which is really sweat.gif ,
i wont use it.. because we have bluetooth for that..

2. OTA - over the air.. means through internet connection..

whatsapp . download it from whatsapp.com

then.. make sure you enabled all the restriction when you install it..

maybe it is the latest OS according to your Service provider , you can always update to another service provider OS..

for example --> the 7.0.0.528[at the first page] is provided by STC

9790 need extra juice[power] because it is OS7 and it is also touchscreen phone..

you can update the OS , try hybrid OS , change the battery to the high capacity battery and also change the 3G mode and use 2G only,,..

if you want the phone to last at least 2 day

battery is a very sensitive and subjective issue. as for me, i always look for JM-1 battery with a tag:-

Cell made in Japan......
Further processed in Mexico / Hungary / Canada / Japan....

last longer. hehehe. 80% off brightstar set comes with cell made in korea, further in china. the user sure complaint about battery problem. hehehe.

i think what he meant was :

This update is currently limited to Over The Air (something like that) update, means you can update it directly from your Blackberry. Offline means it will be a file available for download which you can update via PC.

There was an error updating your software
Application Loader was unable to connect with your device. Restart the loading process, reconnect your device and try again.

I have tried reconnecting my device and try again but still the same...
*
I thought you want to install OS 7.1 , the newest update..

the first page is still 7.0 , it is the offline installer ..

for OS 7.1 you need to update it via online...

but i'm not sure whether 9790 is already to update or not.., you may check it..

Yes. i want to install OS 7.1, the newest update.
i jus thought the method of updating is the same for both 7.0 and 7.1 but apparently not... sad.gif

why 9790 may not be ready to update? RIM release they update model by model?

i think what he meant was :

This update is currently limited to Over The Air (something like that) update, means you can update it directly from your Blackberry. Offline means it will be a file available for download which you can update via PC.
*
when he end it wif 'its up to you' i thought i can choose the method to update...
but so far it seems there's no way i can update it

OK - hands up to anyone who updated their BB wif OS 7.1

latest update: clicking the 'UPDATE' button seems to have positive response from my BB Desktop Software but it still returns wif a negative feedback - There are no BlackBerry Device Sofware updates available. doh.gif

May I know how is this UPDATE process really being done? u're giving me the impression that the update is being sent to each individual BBM owner/model stage by stage? not world wide release?

AFAIK , for 9790, RIM still not officially release OS 7.1 yet... , but don't know the exact time/date that they will release it... ,

thats why I ask you to check ...

it is just update your device OTA , or through DM , it is just the simple thingy, but If you got that update and want to update.. I suggest backup first... ,

it will download the OS OTA , and you cannot use your device when the updating process is occur..

so far, the updates is available in BB server.. but not all devices/OS can get that yet..

my 9360 still didn't get the updates..., my 9860 already can be updated.. but I want to wait until offline installer release

Hav it a go (if its available), maybe u'll like it ;D

Has anyone faced a sound caused by the metal plates on the back cover.. like clicking sound? Each time i type, i can hear the metal plates rubbing against each other and its pretty distracting.

After trying several methods to resolve the heat issue and battery drain and those didn't work, I went to Brightstar HQ in PJ. Got a new set after 'haggling' forcefully with the customer support person. My questions are:

1) Do I have to register the set again for warranty on Brightstar website? I got the 24 months warranty originally as I bought it within the promotion period.

2) When does the warranty start, from the date I originally bought the phone or date that I got the new set?

3) I managed to use the same BB ID on this phone and got a message saying that emails to the my old set has been terminated but when I log in to the BB Protect website and use my ID, it shows the pin to my old set. Do I need to resolve this or does it even matter?

Thanks notworthy.gif

lol at the word "haggling" there , hmm, at least, you still get the replacement..

1. this, you need to ask the Brightstar, but AFAIK, the replacement set is just have basic warranty , try enter your IMEI at --> https://bbwarranty.my.brightstarcorp.com/BBRegistration.aspx

2. try to register your IMEI first[at no.1] , AFAIK , you will just get basic warranty, and the warranty start from the first date you originally bought the phone , [not from the date you get replacement set]

3. Seems that, you have register the BB Protect with that ID , yes.. you need to solve that.. just add your current phone in your device list..[in manage devices]

^^Tried to register the IMEI, this came up

IMEI entered is invalid, please check your IMEI number again and ensure that your BlackBerry Smartphone is from Brightstar.

Now what? Should I call Brightstar to clarify?
Thanks

Info for anyone else in similar situation. Poster above is right, warranty is valid from original date of purchase but there is NO need to re register in Brightstar's website as it is automatically done by service center.
As for BB Protect issue, tried to add device in 'Manage Device' but no such option is available.
Service center will contact me after CNY hols to update on resolving this. Once done, will update here.

I was thinking of a higher capacity battery, the current battery heats up very quickly and drains fast too. I only use 2G/EDGE and by evening, the battery will be 30% ....

That depends on your location.

For me, i usually choose either 2G or 3G. I dont like the 2G&3G function. If you see the 3G logo with a Blackberry logo on your top right corner, means you are connected via 3G, if EDGE = 2G.

Uploading photos with 3G is much faster than EDGE. Probably because of the poor network reception in your area nod.gif

Check if the GPS is turn on. For me I only turn it on when I need it. Seriously save the battery life. Another workaround is to set the network to 2G only and use 3G only when you need it.

exactly, if your 2.75G [EDGE] line is stable , .. just use 2G .. it is fast too...

even I'm browsing using EDGE ... don't need 3G ... , if streaming.. of course 3G line laugh.gif

if you need faster , use 3G

hybrid OS is the OS that contains files from various OS..
For Example, hybrid OS may contains some files from OS 7.0.0.592 , OS 7.1.0.520 << this is example[just example]

hybrid OS isn't released by Blackberry/RIM , it is created by Blackberry user smile.gif

if you want to update, you can just update to .592 or .609

it is not really important to update to OS 7.1[if available] but it is up to you...

you will love the newer OS biggrin.gif

RRP should be RM1440.

White 9790 looks like a plastic toy. Black looks better IMO

well among the femes tips, u can adjust brightness to lowest & signal use 2G instead of 3G. changing batery to a better one (etc sun global batt) oso helps.
