Hi,
how do imbellis fight against each other?

i have 2 male 1 female imbellis in a tank. last night, i saw both the male flare and fighting each other. the way they fight -> use their caudal fin to push each other away -.- instead of using their mouth to attack.

is this how the wild type fight?

QUOTE(ZONX @ Apr 24 2012, 11:06 AM)
From the way they fight. seems more like pushing each other away only. after 5 minutes, they swim together again like friends. maybe that's how they got the name "peaceful betta" ..lol

only able to see their color when they flare (dark, blue, red). or else they will be colorless. =(

Hohoho... Never ever do compare betta splendens of plakats, fighters, or show bettas with wild bettas, in this case betta imbellis.

Betta splendens, they're just ferocious fighters, built or trained or bred to be fighters. A different class on their own. One way to describe - Built for the Kill.

Betta imbellis and other wild bettas, are for hobbyists, in other words to be kept, raised, bred and to preserve and conserve the species but not for fight to death purpose or to see their beautiful fins being torn or shred to pieces.

Besides that, they don't really fight with their teeth. Flaring at each other from tanks or bottles or even pushing each other away (I call it 'ass bumping') until they get tired and they could still live happily in a large tank with each other.

Occasionally there might be some slight fin damage due to some carelessness of confrontation, otherwise they're as peaceful and serene as best ffriends.

Regarding their colouration, betta imbellis or any other wild bettas will only show their best colours during flaring or breeding. As you might have heard of such a phrase - 'Don't piss me off until I'll show you my TRUE COLOURS!'.

They won't simply be at their best colours at all times, unlike the betta splendens of plakats, fighters, or show bettas, who are able to flare 24/7 and at all times in their strong contrasting colours.

This, is what makes the difference by a huge margin in between the two. Have fun! icon_rolleyes.gif

LOL! Tested and proven. They may be small but now I've experienced seeing one of my best male flaring at a male fighter and scare the larger fighter to show its stressed lines. rclxms.gif

Thanks! a very clear clarification rclxms.gif can't wait to separate them in different tank and let them flare. If i separate them in different tank for sometimes, then i put them back into same tank again, should be no problem also rite? sweat.gif just wondering...

once i put a small haruan (slightly longer than the imbellis) into the imbellis tank, they turn into dark color and hide in the plants.. blink.gif maybe feel threaten icon_question.gif

Haha. No worries. You could try to separate them and put them back to see the effects. I don't think they are as ferocious as the betta splendens. If they do seem to fight and get injured badly, do separate them up.

Anyway, if you have photos to show of your very own betta imbellis that would be lovely.

Yeah, good for your channas, not good for the bettas. Go get yourself shrimps, drain guppies, bloodworms or bird mealworms to feed your channas instead. Shoo shoo... laugh.gif

one of the imbellis has torn fin caused by the channa sad.gif
what i did was revenge for them. i put the channa to another tank with a bigger size adult betta.

what's happened was the channa was totally freak out and crying for no way out being hunted by the betta.. biggrin.gif

at the end, i put the channa back to the ditch, since i don't have live food for it..

p/s: got couple of livida to share? drool.gif rclxms.gif

Yes, imbellis, smaragdina, stiktos are all from the splendens complex but this thread is about the splendens' splendens. LOL!

Shouldn't really drag on into the wild bettas or else it would poison the people here. Haha!
