Heard about mechanical keyboard for sometime, but have not tried one. The other way went into a PC shop and saw the Razer Black Widow on display, knowing its a mechanical keyboard I went to test and man, love it!

Planning to grab one of these! Any recommendations? Budget about RM300~RM400 or I'll need to fork out more? Is there any obvious choices? Like maybe Logitech G700 for mouse for example?
*
Erm, provided you had the budget, then there is an "obvious brand" which you probably won't go wrong at - FILCO(though you need to fork out another RM50-100 over your budget for it). It is consider a premium brand in Mechanical Keyboard(Cherry MX switch).

If you want it to be cheaper or particularly in need of RED switch, try getting Leopold, from ahem ahem, visit first page for details. If you want to go for even more plain and compact looks, Ducky are your way. Ducky also having BackLit option.

What you "may" go wrong at is the type of switch to choose, namely RED, BLUE, BLACK and BROWN.

For FPS style of gaming, many ppl gone for black and red due to the linearity(which mean you press smoothly down) that provide immediate action.

For RTS style of gaming, most ppl prefer having "tactile" feedback, which is absence in the RED and BLACK just now. Blue and Brown is both tactile.

The one you tried on Razer is Blue, distinguishably known by the ticking sound it made.

For more information on the switch, visit the first page.

I own the Black Widow Ultimate and Filco Majestouch 2. To be honest, Razer's quality is really no match compared to the Filco. The only thing good about Razer is the looks (cosmetics) and product packaging biggrin.gif
*
Razer spend most of their money on PACKAGING, BLING BLING and ADVERTISING....

If they save those money and use on the products, I sure their product can be much more excellent than the shit mess now...

I use my keyboard for typing most of the time... rarely game much nowadays, blue switch should suit me? or should I be going with brown instead?
Nice, will consider this biggrin.gif. How's the quality, build etc?
*
Built quality, it is quite excellent and on par with FILCO.

Though, there is some rare case in USA's users which the controller gone faulty. Note that I stated it is rare, so don't be too keen on it. At least it is sure the DOA, RMA rate of it will be less than Razer... whistling.gif

QUOTE(204 @ Jan 3 2012, 04:15 PM)
hi guys.. i'm lately checking out mechanical keyboards and would appreciate for some suggestion.. keyboard i'm checking out was..
i'm checking out blackwidow standard.. reason is cause its cheap and i'm not sure if the key actually last better compare with the coating of the ultimate.. but i like the backlit of the ultimate..

after some research i found out both razer is only 2kro.. so i begin checking out others.. and notice the ducky 9008s.. it has the light which is nice.. the matte finish which is less fingerprint magnet.. and some review say the plastic is way better than razer.. but it's at a quite premium price for half a k

so my concern is.. any of you experience less pleasant experience with he blackwidow, keycap quality, fade issue, shiney key.. does the ducky have any issue like that as well as some review mention the unstable quality of ducky.. has that been improved..  i have sweaty hands so i'm quite paranoid about the quality and it's durability..

and if you were in my place.. which would u buy.. other brand is welcome also.. since.. u're the one that've been through it tongue.gif much thx

Added on January 3, 2012, 3:17 pmalso.. hows the blue switch and brown switch in ur actually experience differ? and does the razer blue sound louder or the ducky blue.. for those who owned both before
oh ya i forgot to ask one very important thing.. i'm using the dlink kvm.. any of you have problem using these keyboards with kvm..
*
Actually, Ducky also not much more pricy than Razer. Eat maggi/bread for few more days to make out the different between both keyboards' price.

For the Razer BWU whine, there is really too many of them and I am actually sick of repeating them again and again... If you really interested, go GeekHack and dig out my post(Username: Human), though like I claimed, it only cover a little of all problems which is too much to be documented.

Sound intensity for blue switch differ not much actually. It mainly depend on the thickness of steel plate and overall weight of the keyboard. Though, the pitch of the sound may vary greatly with the change in plate/pcb mounting and change in keycaps types.

If you are not really a gamer which use the keyboard for gaming, blue switch is quite a good choice if you tried and like them(though again make sure it is a quality board...).

KVM? I don't think much/any of us here are using it. But to be safe, normal "ancient board" like FILCO should be your best bet. Ducky and Leopold having some sort of modified controller, not sure if it will affecting anything. hmm.gif

Thats pretty much the standard price for it. Not sure if retailers are willing to go lower though.

In China, Ducky Shine also cost around that number(convert to RM).

Deck(it is legend, no malaysian had ever lay a hand on it b4...)

what they trying to tell you is,
with that budget you can get any Mecha keyboard with backlid option already.

Added on January 3, 2012, 10:46 pm
Mionix is NOT available at SEA countries yet. It appears to have very limited production and currently... i do see Zibal appearing at Euro and US only. Unless you have MANYAK SUI for Mionix. if not, i suggest you forget about it smile.gif
*
Agree, to get Mionix, your budget should be enough. Though, you need to pay quite lots for shipping far from US(and hire shipping agent/proxy). Also, do remember that you can't claim warranty too.

IMO, it is not worth all the trouble and risk to ship a mionix far from US(though I think Deck might worth it, cause it is "legend", LOL...), except you are having friend or relative in those countries and can help ship to you.

Or if you want something more challenging, go get a poker from China(Taobao) and modify LED onto them by yourself. brows.gif

If you don't mind a compact keyboard, you seriously can consider KBT Race. Quite a rare thing that you can get your hand on.

If not, just go grab a Ducky Shine of your desired switch and LED color, nuff said...

It is filco's clone erm, I mean "long lost brother"...
It is coming from Costar(filco manufacturer) and using the same controller and possibly plate mount too(and they are both plagued by the same arrow keys offset things...).

The option is quite limited. E.g:

Which one is more worth, we can't give you a definite answer.

But one thing is for sure, ppl around you sure think you are nuts for paying over RM400 on a plain looking keyboard... whistling.gif

In other words, pay a visit to LYP and test them out yourself. Whichever you are more happy and "song" at, grab them... bruce.gif

I agree, their tactile and click is much more "natural" and consistent.

Certainly such thing won't be in the market by May, not more to say in Malaysia's market.

@kaiserreich
Nope, i haven got my own Model M. It was based on my experience(or probably memory + large portion of imagination...) more than 10 years back...
I will certainly give it a chance when the time come... brows.gif

Probably available at LYP.

Or you can PM the Ducky distributor in MY - Storm88 for more details?

Brown switch you mean? Ducky Shine's keycaps are made by ABS and thus, the keycaps will get shiny after long usage.
*
I don't think thats the case(just some assumption), the coating will wear out first b4 the keycaps start to become shiny, right?

Probably like the Razers and the Logitech keyboards with Backlit.
Those translucent POM would be nice, but the point of backlighting is probably to see the legends in the dark.
*
Different color for different legend, problem solved? icon_idea.gif

BTW, just need to mark certain keys such as F and H is more than enough(for those who memorised the layout).

Then what's the point of a back lit keyboard?
Kinda defeats the purpose. Unless the room is so dark, that you can't see where your keyboard is at all  tongue.gif
*
Yar, for the case that the room is completely dark, cannot locate the position of keys after moving them, need to peek for one time.

if that's the case, you would already master the way of touch typing without touching the keyboard.
main point is, most of the mechanical keyboard has already provided the small nubs on F and J and 5. you can just use that instead for mastering hand position.

Before i type, my hand would always put into position first.(left hand index finger touching F nubs, and right hand index finger touching J nubs)
This is probably the best way for beginners to start learning touch typing. Because i do remember some users did pm me and said this.

mastering hand positions first would probably be leading you have learn touch typing easier.
*
It is really a little hard to located the position of keyboard after moving your hand away in a fully dark condition. You first need to located the edge of keyboard(Esc may help), then finding the nubs by slide through your fingers.

I do admit that BL can help you locating the keyboard position faster and easier.

I tried a Filco tenkeyless yesterday at Lowyat plaza Viewnet, it was awesome and I was instantly poisoned by it but, I don't know what switch is it... Plan to get a leopold after CNY but is there anywhere I can try different switches in KL? Want to order from cyclone but Taiping is too far to try...
*
The feel on all plate mounted board will not deviate much. In other words, Leopold will not feel much different from Filco(except for large modifier keys).
