I'm a long time user of Petronas lubricants... They are fixed priced at Petronas petrol stations and also at service centers.
I just purchased the items yesterday, and that's why I started this list. Starting to feel that engine oil prices are getting ridiculously high.

some shop price is include labour to change the oil, some you buy and then take to shop to change (with additional labour charge), surely will have some differences in price for this 2 option.

If the price is including labour to change the engine oil, you can mention as well.
Will ensure it's added to the list with full details mentioned.

I'm using Petronas all these while because it's a good engine oils, and I have no complaints about it except the price now, which has been increased from RM95.00. So I've started this thread and also doing research if I add maybe RM10 - RM20, can I get a good quality FS oil instead...

Managed to get Petronas Syntium 3000 5W-40 (4L) for RM180 for my dad. Is that cheap?

Was planning to change to the Petronas Syntium 5000 (0W-30) for my Vios (2003). But some ppl say not really good since that grade is designed for cold weather. Ive used Syntium 5000 on my old Wira bout 8 yrs ago and it was great.

Better reputation? I heard the castrol market spoil already because most sparepart shop selling recycle shell/castrol oil.
Therefore buy castrol at hypermarket

Updated list to date. For those with questions in regards to engine oils, I would recommend visiting this link:-

http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html

Not only does it cover engine oil comprehensively, it also covers all other aspects of car maintainance for the DIY Car Enthusiast inside all of us. Best of all, the information is free.

as salam,

not just ok, but it is state on the manual on every car...Recommended but as long as you follow the chart(look on the manual again), it will give you some charting on viscosity grade you can use...

depend on climate....

10w-30,5w-30 is suitable ofr TOWN DRIVING where so many stop and go...

10w-40,15w-40, 20w-50, 15w-50 and so on are suitable also plus good for highway and high revving engine...

5w-20, 0w-20, 0w-30??nahh...i dont think Malaysia have the climate that so cold....even at genting or cameroon not so cold...

coz even if you use 20w, your car still can start at temperature 5 degree celcius....

just my 34.5 sen..

my friend have lots of experience in automotive stuff, so if he say it is better compared to other semi syn, then from my point of view i will say that it is good, you can try it out and get the feedback yourself. then you can tell me how it is after that cheers. happy.gif v

Liqui Moly is made in Germany; Torco made in USA; both brands have been receiving great reviews from many motorists.
Therefore I think country of production doesn't matter.

Can use other brand but need to choose at less Semi 10W/40 SM/CF,Else better use back Perodua Geniune.
Price range around RM 90 - RM 110 is ok, Brand must choose those in less fake, since famous brand got a lot of fake oil..

Yesterday, I just found out that engine oil(shell HX7) sold in TESCO doest not contain protective plastic.
HX7 bought from shell petrol station has protective plastic.
For me la,i think its possible a fake oil,
please, any expert in Lowyat.net can prove me wrong?
picture attached will show u what i mean by protective plastic.

Tesco imported the oils directly from EU.
If hypermarket such as Tesco is really selling fake oils, will Shell keep quiet ?

If you are still in doubt, you may write email to Tesco to voice this out. I believe they would be glad to explain to you/the public.

As long as the oil is real engine oil with correct viscosity, your car should be fine.
If can bring own oil, you may try Amsoil/RedLine/Torco/LiquiMoly, not sure if these brands carry 5L packing.

Doesn't help at all. A leak is a leak. No matter what it will still leak. My suggestion is go change the gasket and while you at it, change your timing belt and water pump.

Am already using liqui moly 10w60. Brought 2 cartons(8 bottles) from a dealer before in KL But his business ceased some time ago and he lost touch with us. So now sourcing for new contacts.

Also , looking at liqui moly ceratec. I swear by its smoothness and engine protection capabilities.( p.s, I am not promoting their hardware, just a firm believer)

Just need opinions here. I am driving Swift and using Motul oil now. It is very good and lasting I think compared to previous Shell oil I used before. I want to try different oil for next service. What type of oil should I used? Perhaps something less expensive or at least similar price as the Motul (I forgot the exact type number but it is fully synthetic). The mileage is around 82+++ km.

thats freaking expensive , my advice before sending your car for service , go buy the lubricants by yourself .. i dont trust those workshop lubricants , it might be fake lubricants ..

usually i will buy lubricants at petrol station , guaranteed genuine

From my experienced for VVTi, VTEC & MIVEC engine better find 5W40/50 for smooth ride, expecially Toyota, Perodua & Suzuki with timing chain inside engine need light oil. That why big & powerfull engine like Lexus using OEM oil 5W50. I think Honda also had their own OEM/Brand engine oil. Anyway 10W40 semi synt blend also can be use but not really suitable. cool2.gif

Honda Malaysia offers 0W20, 5W30 and 10W30 for Honda cars, 5W40 is recommended for Civic Type R....

http://www.honda.com.my/sales/parts_lubricant

Honda, a member of JAMA (Japan Automobile Manufacturers Associations) will recognize specification developed and implemented by ILSAC, currently, the standard is GF-5....

http://www.oilspecifications.org/ilsac.php

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=480...&type=3&theater

If you are looking for most updated specification and standard for your Honda City,

It should be:

SAE, 0w20, 5w30 or 10w30
API SN
ILSAC GF-5

I think pumpman was trying to say, the engine will be more powerful using lower viscosity grade oil (5W30) than 10W40....

Tesco source engine oils from EU. Their packing may differ from the ones sold in gas stations/spare part shops/workshops.
Do you think Tesco dare to sell fake oils?
Even if they do, you know the legal right to sue them for causing damage to your engine.

It's the CFE version... first change is petronas synt 1000 15W50, not sure kena con or what... haha~ really lousy oil... thats for sure... smile.gif any comments on this?

why they sell so cheap ah, is even cheaper than nasa, hi-rev and many local chapalang brand ?

I brought in my old proton saga to the shop and they sold recommended me a Nasa 20W-50. Since im noob in this department, i took it. Service costed about RM95.

Now that i read up, i feel i got ripped off a bit. but oh well.
20w-50 should be a high viscous oil right? meaning high temp and high Fuel consumption.

20w50 does not mean it will have high viscosity and high temp range....it all depend on the DATASHEET...find it via manufacturer....

high viscosity = HIGH VISCOSITY INDEX

high temperature operation = FLASH POINT value..

Let me know if you found a SC which accepts the engine oil you bring in. Want to use LM for my mother's ride as well. but having 15w50 for a turbo charge car sounds just right.

I have found that , due to the additional heat generated by a turbo engine, regular Mobil 1 pure synthetic becomes too thinned out & gets `consumed`in anything other than a brand new engine!.
The answer is to use Mobil 1 Racing Formula 15W/50 , which is also a pure synthetic......
these oils have a much higher resistance to heat-breakdown than old-fashioned mineral oil.
Nick.

http://www.hyundaiperformance.com/forums/f...rbo-engine.html

yeah so for turbo charge better use something thicker and have higher heat resistance.

As most of us aware , turbo depend on engine oil to carry away heat generated, using thicker oil means less oil flow and less heat being carried away..

huh? seriously? Engine oil can carry heat to which part? I thought they suppose to resist more heat and then your intercooler suppose to be the one doing the cooling job. blush.gif

Intercooler is a device to cool down the intake air after the turbo, it has nothing to do with cooling down the engine moving parts or lubricant....

The engine oil film thickness or film strength actually increases as flow of lubricant increases....

A xW40 (higher viscosity) engine oil has only less than 10nm when it is flowing at the speed below 0.04 metre/second, But a xW30 (lower viscosity) engine oil can reach more than 13nm of engine oil film thickness when it is flowing at 0.08 metre/second.... The key of protection lies on the speed of lubricant flow, a lower viscosity oil which capable to flow at higher speed can actually provide better protection than higher viscosity oil which is prone to flow slower...

Engine oil that flow slow in oil gallery inside a glowing hot turbo charger will likely be having "coking" effect, the engine oil will be "over cooked" and turn into carbon deposit or sludge.... A couple of engine oil tests have actually address such issue, such as ASTM D6335 and Honda HTO-06....

Totally agree with you.. Intercooler works to cool down intake air so more air(o2) mass can be charge into combustion chamber.. biggrin.gif

but if rew-ing too hard on the turbo = oil may be going thinner, hence getting xw/40 wouldn't be much safer in case long distance / long term "harsh" driving? or is there any diff in both?

nevertheless, for service centre proton that accepts other oils, try Proton service centre @ puchong, proton edar~ Dumped Castrol Edge 5w/40 into my prevee this morning... Much Much better then previously using Synt 800 +_+"

Well my knowledge is pretty limited in this area but from what I know and have been reading... some peeps who are using lower viscosity oil they gotta top up the engine oil occasionally because it got heated up too quickly and evaporate in their turbo charge ride turbo charge ride.

Also why would GTR and some other top performance car recommending 10W-60? base on your theory shouldn't they be using something lower?

Let's compare this 3 technical datasheet , a) petronas synthium 800 10w/40, b) castrol edge 5W/40 & c) mobil 1 5W/30

a) http://www.mymesra.com.my/microsite/lubric...00SM_10W-40.pdf

b) http://www.opieoils.co.uk/pdfs/castrol/cas...-edge-5w-40.pdf ( assume this is the same as what we get in Malaysia, cannot get from castrol malaysia website and that is the reason why i never use castrol)

c) http://www.mobil.com/Malaysia-English/Lube...bil1_5W-30.aspx

Look at the flash point (higher is better), which among 3 got better number? why? Fresh oil will get thinner with heat ... but lousy oil will get thicker when expose to heat ( oxidation, sludge and carbon)

why you feel better with castrol edge 5W/40 compare to synthium 800? first is because of fresh oil and filter, second, look at the kinematic viscosity at 100 deg C... castrol is thinner , thus you feel much better.. I believe by going to xW/30 you will say WOW!!!

p/s I am not marketing any of above mentioned oils..

I'm so sorry for asking.

I've been servicing my car at one particular workshop for the past 4 years.
They use Total. Charge me RM100 per service.

Now a friend of mine suggested me another shop as he said the workmanship is good and he checks the car throughly unlike my usual shop.

So I want to try it out. Problem is that I have to provide my own engine oil.

Which brand and oil should I use?

I drive a
Proton Waja 1.6 2006 Campro.

Thanks!

10w30 is recommended in owner manual.... Is 10w40 a more rational/better choice? or Proton had made a mistake in choosing right viscosity?

Recently the workshop that I used to service said the Petronas
Synthium 800 5w30 was no more....now replaced with 10w40/10w30

I ask around Petronas and they also say the same.
only 10w available on shelves.

I've serviced using this oil for many times already
and collected the left over oil.
I've nearly got a bottle of 4L( enuf for 1 service)
now they say no more in production so how?

can anyone verify this?

Don't worry, you can buy Perodua 5w30, API SM, it is semi syn and it is made by Petronas... and it is cheaper than Syntium 800.

According to Petronas Dagangan web, Syntium 800 5w30 semi syn is API SM and ILSAC GF-4 certified

According to API web, Syntium 800 5w30 semi syn is now API SN (one notch above SM) certified with "resource conserving"... without any ILSAC

ILSAC GF-4 is no longer valid after 30th September 2011 and it is now replaced with GF-5... and Syntium 800 is not ILSAC GF-5 certified/approved... technically, this oil can be considered quite a good oil before 30th September 2011, but judging by current standard, it has not been able to meet current ILSAC standard yet... So why not looks else where for 5w30 which is API SN, ILSAC GF-5 approved?

Be very cautious not to choose oil without official API or ILSAC approval.... All official approvals can be checked here http://eolcs.api.org/, it is always up to date...

never knew it was SN coz i always see it labeled as API-SM?

I changed to this oil after realizing that perodua's oil was API-SL.

which was inferior compare to API-SM?

any oil can recommend which is API-SN and ILSAC GF-5?

There are 2 Perodua 5w30 oil, the one packed in silver bottle is claimed to meet API SL standard, another one that is packed in gold coloured bottle is claimed to meet API SM standard...

I don't need to recommend you which 5w30 oil is API SN and ILSAC GF-5 approved, because there are many active oil sellers here in this forum, very soon they will post up their products and next thing you know you will PM them for price.... biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Hi. Im curious on the authenticity of my newly bought engine oil. I get it from a friend of friend. The label call fully synthetic " Synthium 3000 5w-30" with price RM110. First i did not realized the details. But when i check at most Petronas station they only sell " Synthium 3000 5w-40" with price RM210. Isit possible that ive been conned by fake oil? any advice on how to check the for its authenticity?

What formula (5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-30 or 10W-40, mineral, semi or fully synthetic) I should use for my car:

condition:
HONDA ACCORD CB4 2.0 (1991) but engine was changed to newer engine (honda accord vtec sv4)

engine oil for engine protection and cleaning, more fuel efficiency
rarely highway and heavy traffic road, but often on snake-shaped and hilly road

I prefer to use Shell Helix 7 oils..but duno which to choose..
or any other suggestions?

either 10w40 or 5w30 is ok..

or you can try heavy duty one..either 15w40 or 10w40 or 5w40 or 0w30...if you're pedal to metal guy...more protection while high rpm..

are you pedal to metal driver or rileks one??

I have little knowledge about engine oil, a few questions for PREVE CFE:

1. Full Synthetic or Semi Synthemic?
2. which grade? 5w30? 10w30?
3. Which Brand is recommended?

My budget is around RM110 and I travel about 2500km per month.

Thanks.

But first and foremost, please refer to your car manual book.

TR5 10w30 usually sell in RM 30 /1L but one thing i find it weird is that this TR5 doesn't exist in the TORCO website dont know why. Only available in Msia tho. You could get it from Kakimotor midvalley btw. Am using it currently and to be honest, TR5 is nothing to shout about. Would want to try TR1 the next oil change but its mineral instead sad.gif

If you opt for fully syn. Do try SR-1.
Or you can consider LM MOS2 for semi biggrin.gif

I believe SL is more than sufficient for any car in Malaysia market now.
If you're concern about the API, can consider those Petrol brand engine oil.

just want to update regarding torco TR-5. i just received an email from Ned Tanson from Torco USA.

QUOTE
First of all, thank you very much for your patronage. We also appreciate your concern and your email.

Torco TR-5 product line has been first induced in China in SAE 5w40 (for colder weather) with a very great result. The Torco SR-5 has been praised by our Chinese customers with better quality and protection that it gives more than other imported and local products of the same level. Torco has introduced TR-5 to Malaysian market with SAE 10w30 and 10w40 for its warmer climate. All of Torco TR-5 products are produced in California, U.S.A. by Torco. Torco will continue to offer TR-5 products to more countries before we have it listed on Torco website since Torco does not want emphasized on none racing products.

Any other questions that you may have please feel free to contact us anytime. Again we really appreciate your continue support of Torco products.

Thank you and best regards,

Ned Tanson

hope this will answer most of the question regarding the why the TR-5 is not on Torco's US website.

yes and no really.

from a personal experience, TR-5 beats liqui moly when it comes to high revving.

the drawbacks however is rougher engine on the low/mid rpm and its additive doesn't seem to last beyond 6-7k km. (my sentra OCI's at 7-8k km because lol women)

atm the sentra is on torco SR due to some "accidents", and i have to say, really f***ing good performance ROFL

Well like I said. SR series is the way if you wanna go for torco. I've even compared the so called Amsoil signature series but eventually it is still outperformed by the SR1.

Errr, is it safe to buy oil from Tesco? From my finding, Tesco oil are those imported from UK market. Therefore, I'm afraid they are meant for UK weather and not for our humid filled weather. Someone enlighten me on this please.

Thank you.

Damn i saw Shell HX7 full synthetic for RM89 at TESCO puchong today. Those TESCO brand 20/50 4 litre mineral selling for RM70 for 2 bottles?!?!?! WTF?!?!?

I'm so want to buy that Shell because its 5L, fully syn and under RM100. The car is due for an oil change already. But whats not making me buy is the bottle stickers seems to be trashed. It either stored too long or recycled bottle? How do you see if its fake anyway for Shell HX7 10/40 5 Litre?

Hey all,

Been using Liquid Moly on both my Xtrail and Vios, was wondering if there's better alternative.

Apart from that, My benz is running on Mobil One which is highly recommended by mercedes themselves. But Is mobil one good comparing to other brands?

hard to tell which one is better...manual or auto??

if manual, then any 75w90 or 80w90 is ok then....if auto, is it normal auto or cvt??if CVT, use only CVT fluid...if normal, then check again what type or dexron or mercon suitable...

MOS2 additive, ceramic nano particles basically.
http://www.liqui-moly.de/liquimoly/produkt...ocument&land=DE
was API SL certified couple years back, and since dropped they never bothered renewing though.
decent specs:
http://www.liqui-moly.de/liquimoly/mediend...2010W-40_EN.pdf

QUOTE
MoS2 LOW FRICTION
MoS2 (molybdenum disulfide) forms a thin layer of high load-bearing lubricant on surfaces exposed to friction and on sliding parts in the engine. The excellent low friction properties of this material lead to lighter engine running, thus inhibiting wear and preventing breakdowns. Results from scientific tests have shown that MoS2 reduces fuel and oil consumption and leads to significantly less wear in the engine. MoS2 Low Friction is available from LIQUI MOLY as an oil additive (added to the motor oil) or as a ready-prepared MoS2 low friction motor oil. In spite of all efforts to polish the surface of the metals mechanically, they still look rough under the microscope (1). This rough ness is made smooth by applying a film of MoS2 lubricant (2) and this ”surface finish” reduces frictional resistance and decreases wear.

From my own experience on proton iswara/nissan sentra:
reduce engine NVH, very smooth revving, definitely last over over 7-8k km.

nope, their full synthetic doesn't which is odd as hell lol.

so most people just stick with their semi synthetic that comes with MOS2

of course, you CAN buy their full synthetic then add their MOS2 additive. not cheap that way though sweat.gif

Do you know why Liqui Moly does not want to add "moly" to other range of products, especially on those higher standard fully synthetic? Could you please check with your principle and enlighten us? thanks.

np bro.

my PERSONAL opinion is that the ceramic particles may breakdown if left in the car/EO too long (also not suitable for extended OCI), hence the other lineups, they'd rather not have it premixed and let the consumers decide themselves (via means of oil additive or the better ceratec)

please don't put words in my mouth yea smile.gif

whether it actually breaks down or not is unknown. what IS known, is that it can EASILY go 7-9k km without degradation of the engine oil AND performance.

and it is in MY opinion solely on how LM is selling their products and it may or may not be the actually be as i said.
