Intercooler is a device to cool down the intake air after the turbo, it has nothing to do with cooling down the engine moving parts or lubricant....

The engine oil film thickness or film strength actually increases as flow of lubricant increases....

A xW40 (higher viscosity) engine oil has only less than 10nm when it is flowing at the speed below 0.04 metre/second, But a xW30 (lower viscosity) engine oil can reach more than 13nm of engine oil film thickness when it is flowing at 0.08 metre/second.... The key of protection lies on the speed of lubricant flow, a lower viscosity oil which capable to flow at higher speed can actually provide better protection than higher viscosity oil which is prone to flow slower...

Engine oil that flow slow in oil gallery inside a glowing hot turbo charger will likely be having "coking" effect, the engine oil will be "over cooked" and turn into carbon deposit or sludge.... A couple of engine oil tests have actually address such issue, such as ASTM D6335 and Honda HTO-06....

but if rew-ing too hard on the turbo = oil may be going thinner, hence getting xw/40 wouldn't be much safer in case long distance / long term "harsh" driving? or is there any diff in both?

nevertheless, for service centre proton that accepts other oils, try Proton service centre @ puchong, proton edar~ Dumped Castrol Edge 5w/40 into my prevee this morning... Much Much better then previously using Synt 800 +_+"
