Slightly OT:
we currently live in an era of instant gratification; of SMSes, instant pop idols, and reality shows. The entertainment we watch (not just anime) are merely a sign of the times. E.g., just as the whacky comedic feel of the Patlabor TV series represented the heady, euphoric days of the Bubble in Japan, so too did the grimmer, darker movies of that franchise (esp Patlabor 2 and WXIII which came later) reflect the pessimistic aura of the post-Bubble era in which it was created. The Gundam franchise too has been continuously evolving to encompass and reflect the cultural/technological changes of the era in which it was created.

aaah natsukashii... seeing this reminds me of my recent sojourn in Japan where I made more than 10 trips to Akihabara. When I see this clip, I instantly recall Shimokawa Mikuni's cover of Eternal Wind which was the soundtrack for that game, and which was the song at Akihabara at that time.

Iam gonna take it that u must like Chinese Kung Fu movies alot and enjoy the Super Robot gentre.

You have to understand Gundam is not a super robot gentre its Militaristic robot gentre so I as a huge gundam fan i expect our heroes to be flesh and blood where they are no invicible.

putting that away Why Seed is so uber lovable this is why

True.. reminds me alot of Hollywood, During the Cold War movie like James Bond was a big hit since Cold War revolve alot on spy warfare then serious political movie was popular during the vietnam war and Star Wars did good because its was release in a few year after the landing of moon.

I don't think the fight scene in GS and GSD is all that cool, it was fun the first few times and it went old really fast and then same old shit for the next 45 episodes

Cool fight scene? Try Ez-8 and Gouf Custom in 08th!

Most gundam series are not chronological done. Sure got fillers and MSV so it's hard to determine the timeline. With the AOZ coming, UC's kinda tunggang langang.

here's the chronological order of the timeline
0079 Mobile Suit Gundam(available in trilogy or series)
08th MS Team
0080 War In the Pocket
0083 Stardust Memory
Zeta Gundam(available in trilogy or series)
Gundam ZZ
Char's Counterattack
Gundam F91
Victory Gundam

i'm not sure where should MS IGLOO fit in though, should be around the same time as Mobile Suit Gundam

from the list there. if you are in for the eye candy type and have no patience, i would recommend gundam 0083, ms08th team, char's counter atk and f91. they are either movies or only spam until 12 or 13 episods long only.

if you are the hradcore fan type, i would say : grab everything

Glad to give some help for your journey to attain enlightenment. Okay, let's make this slightly procedural. At this moment you're keen on venturing into the realm of the original Universal Century Timeline of the Mobile Suit Gundam Saga rclxms.gif . All right then, we'll go through a short introduction to the dynamics of the UC Timeline and its component stories.

First of all, I should stress that arranging every UC Gundam series' in a chronological order is not exactly a right move. You see, like any large, multi-title saga, we have the core stories and the side stories. Those who have read novel-based sagas like the Star Wars and the Battletech novel series' will understand this concept of core and side stories.

For UC Gundam, the core stories are (in chronological order):
Mobile Suit Gundam
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ
Mobile Suit Gundam - Char's Counterattack
Mobile Suit Gundam F91
Mobile Suit Victory Gundam

And the side stories are (in probable sequence):
Mobile Suit Gundam - MS IGLOO
Mobile Suit Gundam - The 08th MS Team
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory

That's it. Simple, isn't it?

smile.gif Now, the detailed explanation for the concept of the UC Gundam side stories. Remember this fact: UC Gundam side stories only matter if you really know the relevant core stories. Why, you ask? This: UC Gundam side stories are pretty much stand-alone stories, but has somewhat great relevance to major events happening in the core stories. So knowing the related core stories first will greatly help you understand the significance and intricacies of the side story itself.

And why do I say that side stories aren't fit to be chronologically arranged with the rest of the core stories? Because most side stories have different starting and ending points in the overall timeline. Okay, take MS IGLOO for example. Its story starts off at the very eve of the OYW and ends at the end of the OYW, but the first Mobile Suit Gundam story starts 8 months after the OYW began, and the 08th MS Team began even later than that; even though all three stories end at the same period of time.

So I'd suggest:-
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

ph34r.gif As you can see, the first Mobile Suit Gundam is definitely a must see, and the rest are up to your own preferences, but I think the best 5-title combo for a new UC fan would probably be:
1- Mobile Suit Gundam (the movie trilogy version)
2- Mobile Suit Gundam - The 08th MS Team (the 12-episode OVA)
3- Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (the 13-episode OVA)
4- Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (the movie trilogy version)
5- Mobile Suit Gundam - Char's Counterattack

That's probably the most ultra-minimum requirement for an elligible UC fan. But if you are up for the challenge (and hence, full enlightenment) , then watch all of the UC Gundams according to this arrangement:-
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

If there's any other questions regarding the TV series version vs. the compilation movie version, the detailed UC Timeline events sequence chronology, or even about the Alternate Timeline Gundams, just post here or PM me and I'll try to explain further smile.gif .

Hope all of this helps, tam_ironcup cool.gif . And I wish you well on your path to discover and understand the true magnificence of Gundam.

Of course. After War Gundam X was meant to be as if it started off post-OYW, almost like an alternate version of Zeta Gundam (and by this I mean in terms of story continuation from the period after OYW event).

But the other Alternate Timeline Gundams (G, Wing) are pretty much distantly related to how their story settings began to the UC OYW. SEED, well, pretty much a bad clone of UC, so let's leave it at that.

And in the case of Turn A Gundam, it's an entirely special case on how it's related to any of the previous Gundams made before it. Only a fortunate few (and I really mean few) I know knows it's true significance to the entire Gundam saga. notworthy.gif

Somehow I don't quite understand how people can confuse UC with AT, they're all quite clearly defined about what they are about. Only tunggang-langgang-prone people might get easily confused with this level of simplicity. doh.gif

downloading the gundm tirlogy movies now, n also zeta gundam, gonna buy the 08th n 0083(saw it in speedy), so surely but slowly, i will attack the whole list. n one mor thing, which one would u ppl delete to make way for gundam, samurai champloo, bleach(79 ep.), trigun or cowboy bebop, which one is worth keeping.
oh yea, thx for all the help, reilly cool to see dedicated gundam fans in  local forum.
*
Of the group of Samurai Champloo, Bleach, Trigun and Cowboy Bebop, I say go ahead and delete Bleach. To me it's the kind of story you only need to watch once - anime for entertainment only, not much brain exercise needed tongue.gif . But try not to delete C.Bebop! laugh.gif Great anime is hard to come by these days...

Of course, if you can burn these anime out onto DVDs or something else, even easier then...

And we're glad to help a potential fellow True Gundam enthusiast. icon_rolleyes.gif

p.s.: I'm just wondering if maybe you should try to DL the 08th MS Team and 0083 as well, instead of getting them from Speedy. I understand if it's about your current available HD space. Cause I'm not too sure about the translation quality on anime from Speedy. Maybe AnimeTech is a better choice, IMHO. I got my 08th and 0083 from there (and I'm DLing those as well from the net. Har har, master of multiple formats; NBTD... laugh.gif )

Gundam's true strength comes from the script. Thus, a Gundam story will certainly get spoiled if watch with bleh-grade translation subs.

... Those are not exactly Original, Those are HK bootlegs which the company does their own subtitles.

And why their English sub sucks because its translated from Japanese to Cantonese and from cantonese to english.

So in the end the results is broken english unlike fan sub its directly Japanese to english.

My advise when gettin these HK disc try gettin Movies and OVA those are more likely to have good subs.
