mmm...let me do the simple answer, expertist and MOD (empire23) please explain further and enlighten them...

to check the bad sector/s...
you may use the built in scan disk, called disk check to see the status....
else you can feel the hdd internal got jammed/crack sound and restart after hit the hdd's bad sector/s. that's all for my experience!

OMG!!!
recently many LYN member got SMART error on their WD hdd....
WD being in the market quite long, why they product such unreliable hdd...
can it be because of making in China? eveything cheap and fast to spoilt sweat.gif
below are the another thread happen on one of the LY member.
i think i should give it a try for Seagate, people were saying Seagate was very noisy, this doesn't matter on me, as long as the hdd can maintain healthy up to at least 5 years and above.

my new seagate will have the 'tak...tak....tak...' sound when using bt,or donwloading via limewire, other time, its as stealthy as a stingray(correct me if i use the wrong term),only thing is,since i bought it from pc fair,so no warranty card or whatsoever, scared cannot claim warranty,so.....no warranty card can claim warranty arr?
*
you bought from the shop, the shop only offer a year warrenty by them, after that, you need to send it by yourself. show them your receipt they have to accept the hdd with F.O.C. else post their company name here and nextt ime will will not bong chan (buy from) them!!!! doh.gif

Seagate was easy, we know the location. only the WD i am not sure where to send. Cycom broucher did mentioned RMA location of Seagate, provided with the address.

Below is the Seagate RMA address....

Seagate SeaCare Centre C/O UPS

Suite 11.20, 11th Floor Menara Summit,
Persiaran Kewajipan USJ 1,
47600 UEP Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia.
Tel: 6-03-8023 1333
Fax: 6-03-8026 8375

Seagate gave 5 years warrenty...wow...this is good...!!! which means they were confident with their products and to serve the consumer. we know the electronic parts is wears and tears. If the hdd can last for at least min 5 years it will consider good. Else if the hdd able to last for more than that, that will be awesome. I would like to know the address & location for the WD RMA, no one mentioned in thsi thread! thanks!

QUOTE(lex @ Dec 16 2005, 12:40 PM)
You may want to check out Warranty Week on the Top 25 Warranty Providers, and you'll notice that Maxtor is in the list. As for Seagate, they are in the Top 50 Warranty Providers instead because of lower warranty claims. It should be noted Seagate ships more drive than Maxtor, however on warranty claims its the other way around though. These figures are mostly for the US/Canada region though.. Sorry, no figures on Western Digital this year YET, but you can checkout the older Warranty Headlines Archive and see..  wink.gif

The figures there are subjective of course. There could be many factors that affect them (such as older warranties due to 3-5 year warranty claims, etc). Just some points to ponder.. sweat.gif

On the subject on reliability.. I would say 80% on how you manage and "treat" them (ie. PSU, cooling, mounting, etc) and 20% luck! Nobody's perfect. tongue.gif

Always monitor the S.M.A.R.T status from time to time to avoid data loss.. Do periodic backups as well..  rolleyes.gif

LEX!!!
how come now only you came in!!!
this is a very good informations...
OMG!!! thumbup.gif

in facts, i think now the most reliable hdd was Seagate, why, because they gave 5 years warrenty for the hdd. they are confident with their products like his past compatitor; Quantum. I think i should buy Seagate and try for it....

Hear ye! Hear ye! This just in (though I'm not surprised at all considering Maxtor current financial situation) ohmy.gif Once upon a time, Maxtor gobbled up Quantum, and now Seagate takes over Maxtor. I wonder if the SeaCare centers will now cater for Maxtor RMAs as well.. brows.gif

i also dunno what is smart.i disable this feature in bios anyway... laugh.gif

mmm....
i prefer a 1 larger hdd for storing all the files into one!!
unless you plan to installed windows into the 40G,
then the 160G use as files storage.

if for me, i prefer to have a large capacity hdd to store my file.

if you are not plannign to sell your current hdd, then the option to yuo is no1.

I have use Western Digital on my 1st assemble PC, Maxtor on my second and also Maxtor on my third...but the third Maxtor showing bad sector already so i guess it wont last long...thinking of changing to Western Digital Caviar series or Seagate...haven't make up my mind yet....really fancy the Raptor but feel it is too expensive for a hard disk...read some really good review about Samsung drive too but my friend work inside don't recommend...hmm...might end up with Seagate since i havent use them before...hahaha...performance wise...i don't really feel any different...i think it is your CPU and RAM which contribute more to the performance sector....hard disk is only for storage biggrin.gif
*
i think better choose Seagate..
since they profive 5 years warrenty. sweat.gif
other than that, there is not other hdd is more reliable
except Quantum!! notworthy.gif

QUOTE(MetalZone @ Jan 9 2006, 04:06 PM)
i will ALWAYS choose Seagate unless i want a WD raptor.
the most reliable hard disks ever. according to surveys, maxtor is reported to have the highest failure rates. (and yes, my one and only maxtor owned died once and was RMA'ed.) 2nd is followed by WD. and lastly the lowest failure rate is Seagate. cant remember about the others. all the Seagates i've owned in the past 8 years that i can remember, none have failed. i'd rather have a hard disk that lasts longer than to save 50 bucks and have it die on me too soon and bring my data along to its death bed.
*
regard the new hdd; WD Raptor,
WD gives five warrenty for that!!! sweat.gif
but do not know how good is that hdd.
Metal Zone and empire23 said this version of hdd would be good.
i am doubt for the new of WD
