QUOTE(toda_erika_II @ Sep 26 2008, 12:09 PM) hey guys, the lowyat hardisk list have like 80GB (2MB), 80GB(8MB). 160G(2MB), 160(8MB), 250(16MB), what does the number in brackets mean? The size of cache memory of the HDD. Theoretically the higher the number, the better the performance at load. However, the different may be insignificant for you to feel it Anyway, just hit the larger one since the price doesn't vary much away

QUOTE(lotiman2003 @ Sep 26 2008, 07:24 PM) WD 16MB and SG 32MB not much different in speed pls be more specific... for the WD 16mb this only applies to the 640GB due to the platters if im not mistaken... other 16mb WD HDDs will have somewhat significant difference especially in benchmarks.

The WD 640GB Caviar SE 16MB is faster than most of the 32MB Seagate disks correct, due to the 320GB platters. Only 320GB and 334GB HDDs like the Samsung F1 are a match for it.

Getting Started

|
I had some bad experience with WD especially WD400 (40GB). Out of four WD drives, the best one lasted 6 months and the worst only one month.
Maybe it's because of the hot climate, anyway I don't buy WD anymore.
I've had no problems with Seagate, Fujitsu or Samsung. IBM (3.2GB) drive lasted several years before giving up.
Best drive was a Conner which still works after 15 years but 120MB so no use anymore.

Getting Started

37C that's close to ambient temperature here at times, no aircon. I would guess they were running 50C - 60C depending on load. They seemed to run hotter than other brand disks, that's why I was wondering if it was the heat that killed them. The WD incidents happened about 5 years ago, todays drives may be different. Where is my stars?

I would say it all depends on luck and how you install or handle it after you buy the hard disk. I've been through all the brands except Samsung and all of them have problems before.
Currently, I like Seagate 500GB 32MB buffer because it's cool and fast.

QUOTE(zer0hour @ Sep 28 2008, 05:13 AM) HD takes too long to download though.. not really when U have 2 X 1.5mb connection + Rapidshare... QUOTE(super macgyver @ Sep 27 2008, 06:34 PM) remember to hook up a powerdul psu too. Will be using HDD dock, archived those HD collection and label it properly..so only 3 HDDs max will be on most of time. I guess Silverstone 560W Zues should be sufficient. recently when i survey to buy a hard disk..i was offered freecom brand in one of the shop in MidValley IT shop corner..according to the salesman, the brand is from Germany and better from WD? I like what the heck? Cuz i never heard of the brand..besides that, he said the hard disk is shock prove and drop it from 2meter high. which later i found it just an empty case..when he talkin to other customer..so any feedback regarding the Freecom brand guys? he said 250 GB for RM360 and I got offer for WD 250GB for RM320. 2.5"
