just discovered something, seagate has the worst fitness. mine is on the edge of breakdown. 1 of it is constantly showing symptom of breaking down. based on the figures, both my seagates have lowest spin retry count and the most terrible seek retry rate. so stay away from seagate. they cannot handle to much stress as compared to maxtor and WD.

guys, i need your opinions here. i'm getting a 250gb hdd and i have a few options here: seagate, western d or hitachi. dont think i'll consider maxtor or samsung. the only plus point i see for seagate is the 5 years warranty by them, while the rest is just normal 3 years only.

my main usage is to store data, thus durability is the main point here. i guess performance and quiet-ness comes second to that. what will u guys suggest?

one more thing, i found that there are 2 models for the seagate series, "Barracuda 7200.9" and "Barracuda 7200.10". anyone can brief me about this?

opinions from u guys will be appreciated, thanks

For performance, go for seagate 7200.10, NCQ + Perpendicular recording does make difference. but in return, u got a hotter hdd ( 38c ~ 44c ) which require active cooling. Else, go for hitachi or wd. benchmark shows mixed for these two brand in terms of performance. but my choice will be hitachi. require less voltage for operation which means runs cooler. i prefer T7K500 series rather than T7K400 series which will carry 16mb cache + NCQ as stated here

http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/T7k500/T7k500_ov.htm

But, its hard to find the T7K500 series as none of our bulker doing bulk of it.

just my 2 cents.

one more question, how come i cant find any lowyat shops selling hitachi hdd? its not too expensive compare to the other brands though. i'm refering to the price list at lowyat.net front page. low market demand, eh?

and er, what does "Perpendicular recording" mean? i guess seagate 7200.10 with NCQ means 16mb cache right. thanks again

Guys i'm thinking of getting WD320GB to replace my old probably 2yo WD250GB because it sounds really really sick and it's causing my PC to hang sometimes. But the 320GB is Sata 2 while my Mobo is only Sata 1. Will it work ?

edit: gah nvm it's backward compatible...
