Indonesia tumbles 5pc, led by banks
September 22, 2011 A stock broker makes a phone call at the Indonesia Stock Exchange in Jakarta October 10, 2008. — Reuters pic SINGAPORE, Sept 22 — Indonesia stocks tumbled more than five per cent today, wiping out all their gains this year as concerns over the struggling rupiah currency and fears over the global economy heightened risks in a market that had been the region’s best performer. Other Southeast Asian markets also lost ground as a gloomy outlook for the US economy by the Federal Reserve put a spotlight on risky emerging-market investments. Indonesia’s main stock index was down 5.72 at 12.37pm, the region’s worst performer on the day and hovering at its lowest since March 17. Thailand fell 2.5 per cent, Singapore was down 1.8 per cent, and Malaysia shed 1.3 per cent by 0455 GMT. Philippines was off 2.6 per cent. Financial stocks led falls in the region with Indonesia’s largest lender, Bank Mandiri , down more than eight per cent, Bangkok’s Siam Commercial Bank off 4 per cent and Singapore’s DBS down two per cent. Yesterday, Federal Reserve Chief Ben Bernanke warned there were “significant downside risks” to the US economy which it moved to counter with an effort to reduce long-term borrowing costs and bolster housing. Analysts in Jakarta said a weaker rupiah also contributed to the market’s worst performance in the day. “I don’t think it’s all because Bernanke’s speech. If it were only about Bernanke’s speech we could only down one or two per cent following the region. It’s mainly because of internal currency issues with rupiah seen weakening above 9,000,” said Pardomuan Sihombing, head of research at Jakarta-based Recapital Securities. “There is a panic selling in stocks both from local and foreigners due to the weakening of rupiah and that will cause capital outflows. Firms with dollar exposure, especially importers including Indofood and Astra, will be affected,” he said. Indofood was down seven per cent and Astra was down eight per cent by 12.50pm. The one-month USD/IDR non-deliverable forward rate hit a near two-year high as offshore players continued to buy amid insufficient liquidity in onshore markets, dealers said. “Offshore investors need to hedge their positions. They cannot fulfil their needs on onshore markets,” said a Jakarta-based dealer. The one-month NDF was up 2.9 per cent at 9,382 in early trade after rising to as high as 9,650, the strongest since November 2009. — Reuters |
