As the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 18 times in their history. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup 4 times, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

Some teams jinx themselves, like, proclaiming that this year is their year, and the year before, and the year before that, and the decades before that too...

On another note, as much as I enjoy Man Utd's current attacking form, I think the defenders are attacking too much as well. Enthusiasm is good, but please don't forget your role. Probably more tutorial is needed from Vidic & Ferdinand to those in the central defending role. They afforded way too much space during the last game because the defenders seem too eager to get on the scoreline as well. I hope we don't end up having Arsenal's defending mayhem.

hope he gets to start..i'm not his biggest fan but i pity his position now, especially after his contributions last season..but he seems ok with it..maybe SAF had a chat with him, saying let the younguns have a go since they're on form?

I'm guessing the line-up will be something like

PIG

Rafael Rio Evans Fabio

PJS Pogba Fletch Young

Owen Berba

Subs: Lindegaard, Gill, Carrick, Nani, Rooney, Keane

PIG needs a match to shut him up or else if he isn't in SAF plans anymore Lindegaard/Amos will start.
The twins needs a match ahead to see who will slot into the RB role in the crunch match against Stoke.
Rio needs a competitive match to get sharp and Leeds will probably be a good place to start as I suspect Stoke and Leeds use similar route football.
Midfield is abit of a blur I'm thinking PJS will start no matter what but who will he displace? I'm thinking Nani will be rested after having two good games.
Pogba to start along side Fletch so that the frenchman will have abit more freedom to move forward with Fletch on suppressing duty.
Young still to play probably just to maintain his good form and his contribution will definitely help Owen style of scoring.
Owen and Berba to start.

lol.. only namely centrebacks can play in defends is it ?

2 years back when the defense department hit with severe list of injuries.. who play in defense? Carrick? Fletcher? and we got more than 10 matches consecutively didn't concede ago until Blackburn's Santa Cruz score one against us..

hahahaha lansi? saf is lansi if he chose to play m keane thorpe fryers fabio in back 4. hell we didnt play 2-4-4, we still played 4-4-2, we just dont have many alternatives in defenders at the momet, and carrick valencia can still play at defence better than reserves squad defender. no brainer. if like that the ppl said saf lansi, I wonder what will he/she say about guardiola who played with only 1 defender 6 midfielders 3 strikers earlier this season in la liga against villareal. lansi meh, really expose the stupidity

Hmm, I guess "someone" might be accepting a paycut to jump ship during the January transfer window whistling.gif

Added on September 21, 2011, 7:59 amBTW, nice game against Leeds. That Owen and Giggs can score, we have Ben Amos in goal, and Berba playing as a CB says a lot about the depth of our squad smile.gif

The next 3 games look like "warmups" to us. After that, hopefully we don't have any injuries during the international break.

Liverpool at home is dangerous, but at their current form we have a good chance to beat them. As for Man City, we are at home so this is good for us.... we will have to see the Liverpool match first though.

well done lads...gud goal from owen...nice team play...its gud to see the likes of mame, berba, antonio, kiko, park, giggs, carrick, fabio, pogba, ezykiel even amos got a run in the side...this line up capable to level our first team IMHO...i think it is bcos we fielded mostly attacking minded player...n they keep their dicipline in defending as well...win the ball back early...n drop down behind ball to help team defending...its a performance like that can make them cut into the first starting 11 first team...the likes of kiko, mame, antonio really move their ass to help team defending...working hard to win the ball back...n burst into attack in a sudden...that kind of hard work really can push them into the place in starting 11...

owen did very well. Berbatov looked uber-cool when playing as CB for last 10 min. Macheda n diouf really is woeful as wingers, but tbf, thats not their position. That fyers kid looks very composed and very good at passing out from the back. His cross-field passes is really great. (albeit a bit wayward in 1st half). So when will we get to know who will face in the next round?

The only reason I'd be grateful with the insomnia thingy. laugh.gif

Pogba still not tough enough against Dirty Leeds. But compared to the year he rolled in our academy, he's certainly bulked up. It's a good thing SAF bringing up young midfielders, last few seasons on CC games he usually bring in young strikers.

And Diouf did well as a right winger. He sucks at first, probably because Sheep's jinx too strong I ges. But he coped well with the game. Ezykiel did impress me, I think he read the game well, another good defender from our academy. And he's Mancunian too right?

Berba kena harassed kaw-kaw. But he did well. On Owen, I'm sure damn happy to have him in our squad, he's happy playing a part in our team, helping young lads, he can mentor some of them, and he's touch is still there, deadly.

fuuh!
looking at the formation and players involve it was an all out attack!
which means my guess for rio and fletch getting a start to warm-up for stoke didn't come true which means he will definitely start to stoke then if SAF didn't want to risk him.

actually chelsea need to overhaul their team if they want to utilize 50m man.
that is why they got the two Mr. M in Midfield.
they play through balls and play passing game which suits him while the old guards play a different style.

Wow. Just learned that Gasperini has been sacked by Inter for their poor start to the season.

Now who's first to go this season in BPL?

And the fans of this 35m man says he's better than Torres. What a joke rclxub.gif

Although the comical miss, he was by far the most dangerous player in the entire Chelsea squad while Mr.35m seems more like a burden to the team
*
How dare you say that...Mr. 35m is the future of England tongue.gif but I wonder why he can't score against our national team rolleyes.gif I bet Safee Sali is far more better icon_rolleyes.gif

OT a bit here.

Malaysia just lost 2-0 to Japan. But it was a really good performance defensively by the young squad. smile.gif

yea, just like what he had capable of, now we know he still is. he's gonna be real deal for mancini if he can stay seasong-long fit and no major injury hampering him. that'll be a big if there.

Added on September 22, 2011, 6:37 amduo everton midfield ross barkley and jack rodwell are getting more chances lately and played impressive, good sign for england center-midfield department future since they also have wilshere and cleverley coming up

Read the tag line. As corny as it might be, most fans would fancy such happening if possible.

OT again:

Apek is currently our biggest asset. So much potential! At first I thought it was a 2 legged affair while we were down 1 goal, and was thinking it's not that bad. Then only i remembered it's a group stage matchup doh.gif

Europe would be far fetched due to the physicality. Leagues in Asia powerhouses like Korea or Japan, or even UAE would give him better exposure. Sadly our local scene is not there yet. sad.gif

As for the ad, nothing wrong with it. We've all dreamnt of smthg like tat as well. It may be impossible right now, but it can happen.

Rio's return vital for Stoke trip

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson is counting on Rio Ferdinand’s experience when United meet Stoke City at the Britannia on Saturday.

The Reds defender, who has started only two of the team’s five league fixtures this term and missed last weekend’s 3-1 win against Chelsea with a calf strain, will provide United a big boost should he be fit to face the Potters.

Trips to Stoke are notoriously tough, with the home fans among the league’s most vociferous and Tony Pulis’ players providing robust, physical opposition. And although the Reds have won on every trip to the Britannia since Stoke were reinstated to the top flight in 2008, no victory has come easy.

“I’m hoping Rio will be okay for Saturday,” Sir Alex said, speaking exclusively to ManUtd.com. “When you go to Stoke you need a bit of experience.

“Rio came into the team when we played at Bolton and gave us that experience, so we hope he'll be fit for Saturday."

The manager was less optimistic about Chris Smalling’s chances of playing on Saturday evening, however, admitting the young defender was “a doubt” after limping off with a groin injury midway through the Chelsea match.

Hargreaves got to that stage where we had to do something with him. It's been what.. 3-4 years? Obviously we've been trying things out to get him fit again. Didn't workout. Hindsight..

The secret behind Wazza's great form this season! laugh.gif

Rooney: My form is down to barber's magic powers

QUOTE
He's the, er, mane man in football right now – and Wayne Rooney reckons his superb ball skills are all down to his barber...

The Manchester United and England striker seems to have regained his form ever since that £30,000 hair transplant a few months ago left him sprouting a head of surprisingly luscious locks.

In fact, the Samson of soccer has such an abundance of hair he gets it trimmed before EVERY match.

Rooney, 25, believes the “magical powers” of hair-whisperer Mr Daniel J have helped him score two consecutive hat-tricks.

“Daniel J always keeps me looking sharp," he said. "And when I look sharp, I feel sharp. I don’t know what it is but it’s like his haircuts have magical powers because every time he gives me a trim I seem to go and score.”

Rooney has even got United teammate Rio Ferdinand and Spurs’ Jermain Defoe using his lucky celeb crimper, too.

“All the lads have been asking me for Daniel’s number," he added. "Of course I’m not giving it out to the [Manchester] City boys.”

Back in June, Rooney posted a picture of his bloody bonce on Twitter , and admitted: “I’ve had a hair transplant. I’m delighted. It will take a few months to grow.”

Three months later and while he’s still not quite got a Leo Sayer-esque mop of curls, there is definitely a lot more up top than there was.

Actually not just from Mirror.... every UK newspaper is reporting the same. But then again, he's the only one who's been in this position for so long, while others have been doing just fine. And MU medical staff are world class and exemplary. So this is either a one-off, or he's really bad.

Ronaldinho and Neymar selected
September 22, 2011

Ronaldinho and Neymar have been included in the Brazil squads for three upcoming fixtures, but Leandro Damiao and Alexandre Pato miss out through injuries.

Coach Mano Menezes announced one list of players for Wednesday's second leg of the Superclasico de las Americas against Argentina in Belem, with only players from Brazilian clubs considered, and another including overseas-based players for next month's friendlies against Costa Rica and Mexico.

Gremio forward Ronaldinho returned to the national team in August after a nine-month absence and has been retained in the group for all three games along with highly-rated Santos teenager Neymar.

Internacional striker Damiao and AC Milan frontman Pato will play no part after picking up injuries in club action yesterday, though.

The Superclasico tie is in the balance after a goalless first leg in Cordoba on September 14. Brazil then play Costa Rica on October 7 and Mexico four days later.

Brazil squad to face Argentina: Jefferson (Botafogo), Rafael (Santos); Danilo (Santos), Mario Fernandes (Gremio), Bruno Cortes (Botafogo), Kleber (Internacional), Dede (Vasco da Gama), Rever (Atletico Mineiro), Rhodolfo (Sao Paulo), Emerson (Coritiba); Ralf (Corinthians), Paulinho (Corinthians), Casemiro (Sao Paulo), Romulo (Vasco da Gama), Lucas (Sao Paulo), Oscar (Internacional), Diego Souza (Vasco da Gama), Elkeson (Botafogo); Neymar (Santos), Borges (Santos), Fred (Fluminense), Ronaldinho (Flamengo).

Brazil squad to face Costa Rica and Mexico: Julio Cesar (Inter Milan), Jefferson (Botafogo), Neto (Fiorentina); Daniel Alves (Barcelona), Fabio (Manchester United) Marcelo (Real Madrid), Adriano (Barcelona), Rever (Atletico Mineiro), Thiago Silva (AC Milan), David Luiz (Chelsea), Dede (Vasco da Gama); Lucas Leiva (Liverpool), Fernandinho (Shakhtar Donetsk), Sandro (Tottenham), Luiz Gustavo (Bayern Munich), Lucas (Sao Paulo), Elias (Sporting), Oscar (Internacional), Hernanes (Lazio); Neymar (Santos), Kleber (Porto), Hulk (Porto), Jonas (Valencia), Fred (Fluminense), Ronaldinho (Flamengo).

I was surprised to know that Ole is now a manager. I always support him and Giggs ever since.
Its been a long time didn't hear about Nicky Butt,Cantona and Dennis Irwin.

I used to have the old school jersey with Cantona name while Sharp was sponsoring. Haha. Also my school uniform was "Cantona 7" at the collar which i bought at Sg Wang..

wow..just read Hargreaves' accusations. Just because he scored that 1 goal, he suddenly starts trash talking? I actually felt glad he is back on his feet. No need to blame in on the medical team.

Maybe he has been talking to Tevez there? He might blame in on the Manchester weather next.

i think the current RB suits him more since he can makes the overlap run and with Nani drawing defenders to him, Valencia can get a clearer chance to whip in his crosses, plus with his good physique and speed, plus Nani's trickery...I'd say our right side is as formidable as it will be brows.gif brows.gif

QUOTE
Hernandez fit for Stoke clash

Javier Hernandez escaped serious injury against Chelsea last weekend and could even feature for United against Stoke City on Saturday.

There were grave fears for the Mexican striker's health after an Ashley Cole challenge left Hernandez writhing in agony on the Old Trafford turf.

"At the time it happened, he had no feeling in the leg. There was numbness and and we thought there might have been some nerve damage," Sir Alex told media at his pre-match press conference. But Hernandez resumed training on Thursday and Sir Alex confirmed: "He's available for tomorrow."

The boss also hopes to be able to call on Rio Ferdinand to bolster United's defence against a Stoke side he says has "made phenomenal progress" over the last few years. The England international missed last Sunday's clash with Chelsea with a calf injury but has trained this week and is ready to return.

"Hopefully I’ll have Rio tomorrow," Sir Alex said. His experience away from home in a game like this is always important. We’ve got a slight doubt about Chris Smalling – we’ll see what he’s like this morning. If he’s back we’re covered well for it."

It's not all good news, though. Nemanja Vidic, who suffered a calf injury in United's opening-weekend win at West Bromwich Albion, still hasn't resumed training. "He's making slow progress. He's still having treatment."

United to issue statement

QUOTE
Manchester United will be issuing an official statement in response to Owen Hargreaves' comments that appeared in the morning's press.

The City midfielder's interview regarding his struggle to overcome injury at Old Trafford came in the wake of his goalscoring debut for his new club in the Carling Cup against Birmingham.

"We've been trying to analyse all the stuff he’s said this morning and we'll release a club statement later today to address that," revealed Sir Alex.

"As far as I’m concerned, my medical staff are one of the main reasons Manchester United has been so successful. We’ve got fantastic medical staff and great sport scientists. Do you think we’d be successful if we didn’t have an operation that wasn’t 100 per cent and handled absolutely brilliantly? The doctor and his five physios and sports science guys are fantastic.

"That’s my opinion on Manchester United and that’s more important than what anyone else has got to say about it. We’ll have a club statement later to address the issue of what he said."

Didn't know what really happened behind the scenes during Hargreaves' day at United. Will wait for United to address the issue later.

We didn't really know becase when injuries happen, sometimes the gaffer will said player X will not feature in a month etc etc, but out of the blue he was on the bench/starting 11 the next game. But some cases also the player were expected to return sooner but ended up taking much longer time for recover...

Btw just noticed Vidic has been out for 7 weeks now. Our youngsters have put a good shift already, eh?

And I don't think Fergie will rest Young and Nani just because they have a CL match. At home. To Basel. Surely he will unleash them, with Rooney on total form and....RAMLI?? laugh.gif laugh.gif

It's not surprising, really. Surely you would've realised by now that almost all players that City recruit have come out and said stupid things about United. Especially the ex-united players.

Notice the trend? Small timers, will always be small timers.

Nani--Fletcher--Anderson--Young

Rooney--Welbeck

My line up prediction:

DDG

Jones - Ferdinand - Evans - Evra

Nani - Carrick - Anderson - Young

Rooney - Hernandez

Carrick in because it's Stoke and we need to cover our defence.
Hernandez in because last term he scored 2. So, better put him.

i dunno how's Hernandez's injury progression is, but SAF subbing Welbeck on during the Carling Cup match may means that he wanna test Welbeck's match fitness and readiness for Stoke, so i think he will get the nod tonight, but as for midfield, yeah, Carrick does seems like the more suitable choice, but we'll see

who knows, SAF might just gives him the chance..but with Owen though, our midfield needs to control the game and make the pass to him...asking him to do link up is a bit too much, his strength is his goal scoring ability

one thing for sure, this game will be as ugly as vs Bolton, so we at least need to bring the form when we faced Bolton in order to dispatch Stoke off

We have a lot of strikers. Mcm main FM pulak....Rooney as the main starter. SAF can choose to pick either Hernandez, Berbatov, Owen, Welbeck, Macheda & Diouf. Maybe u r right. Welbeck would get the nod. Hernandez to come in if anything goes wrong.

It's not surprising, really. Surely you would've realised by now that almost all players that City recruit have come out and said stupid things about United. Especially the ex-united players.

Notice the trend? Small timers, will always be small timers.

yes, unfortunately so i'm glad smikes turned a new leaf lately and supported DDG which makes him better coz he is too legendary to be hated.

match you highlighted all involves premier league team, shouldn't be potential upset unless it involved 1st division/championship team vs premier league team

the club is new (founded 1992 by a group of fans after the old Aldershot gone bankrupt), but the stadium is not, it had been opened since 1927

it also means that the old club didn't did well either lulz....but any way, United will get 1,100 ticket allocation (according to wikipedia on away fans distribution), that's a lot considering its almost 6 to 1 ratio
