hello bros want to confirm if my laptop can support eGPU... chances is i can only do mpcie x1 coz i don't have slot...
my specs is as follow
Model: Asus X42jr
Processor: intel i7 Q740 @ 1.73
Ram: 4gb
Gpu: Ati Radeon Mobility HD 5470
OS: Windows 7 Home x64

no idea how to determine switchable graphics and etc.... any help would be greatly appreciated... main reason for doing is because the only thing that is killing my laptop is the GPU others are all performing quite reasonable for todays standard along my requirement..... just need the GPU boost to do some gaming on my free time rather than paying thru my nose for a new rig which i can't spend alot of time on....

thanks in advance !

Your notebook have Intel i7 740QM which means your notebook doesn't have switchable graphics. So, the only way to get better performance from eGPU is you'll need to do x2 link setup. However, I believe your notebook doesn't have ExpressCard slot & it only have one mPCIe port. So, x2 link setup is not possible because it needs two mPCIe ports OR ExpressCard+mPCIe.

I roughly know bout that and willing to reposition/disable wifi for that purpose... I saw on another website someone did it with the same laptop but the post is very old.
I can barely cope with low settings on mmo games ~_~
This is the only option to prolong my laptops lifespan lol!
Pls advice smile.gif

Hi Kizwan.
firstly thank you very very much for your explanation. Yours solved all of my questions at once. So much better than all other explanation about PCIe.

but still i have some questions that i can't find out.
I am using dell xps 1645 and have these values for my PCIe.

PCI Express Controller
PCI-E 2.0 x1 port #1 Empty
PCI-E 2.0 x1 port #2 In Use @ x1 (Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6200 AGN [8086-422C] [NoDB])
PCI-E 2.0 x1 port #4 Empty
PCI-E 2.0 x1 port #5 In Use @ x1 (Ricoh PCI-E Memory Stick Host Controller, Ricoh PCI-E SD Bus Host Adapter)
PCI-E 2.0 x1 port #6 In Use @ x1 (Broadcom NetLink BCM5784M PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller)

You said that we have to use #1 & #2 or #3 & #4 etc.. to use x2 links right?
but according to the values of my computer, 3# does not show up. Is that express card slot? and Why can not i use #1 and #3 (if this is express card slot) to do x2 link?

Oh and
Can I use any graphic cards such as gtx 580, 570 or other good ones better than gtx 560, if i have a good enough PSU?
the reason why i ask you is that most of people left the review with gtx560, and have not seen anyone using better ones than that.. so i doubt that there is limit for the eGPU.

Thank you so much again!

Sorry for replying late. I'm super super busy lately.

First thing you need to know about the AIDA64 report on the PCIe ports is it only report enabled PCIe ports. Second thing you need to know is, even though the PCIe ports are listed in AIDA64, it doesn't means they are physically available. Referring to your notebook PCIe ports layout, for sure you can't use PCIe port #5 & PCIe port #6 because these are integrated devices, you can't disconnect them.

The reason why PCIe port #3 is not listed are because it is disabled. To determine whether PCIe port #3 is available or not, you can moved the wireless card to another available mPCIe port(s) & check again in AIDA64 where your wireless card is appeared now. Write down the PCIe port number for that mPCIe port. The rule x2 link setup only possible using PCIe port #1 + #2 or PCIe port #3 + #4 or PCIe port #5 + #6 are according to Intel chipset datasheets. It already proved to be true & only applied to Intel chipsets. BTW, ExpressCard slot is at PCIe port #4 according to this post. That guy is connected eGPU (ATI Radeon HD 6950) to ExpressCard slot.

You can use any graphic card you want. Just remember, base on the notebook specification, you can do x2 link setup. There will be two cables running from underneath your notebook but it will give much better performance than x1 link setup using only ExpressCard slot.

Like I said in my previous post, only x2 link or x1.Opt setup can deliver better performance. x1.Opt setup is not possible on your notebook because your notebook doesn't have Intel HD Graphics iGPU. Also, it is unlikely you can do x2 link setup either because your notebook is likely only have one mPCIe port. Please read this post for more information:-

Added on April 26, 2012, 3:39 pmHI. I actually have one more question.
Im buying N570GTX Twin Frozr III Power Edition/OC which requires around 480W. Then, would any PSU over 500W be good enough to run it?
Oh also Which one do you recommend me to use 560, 560ti, or 570?

Hi all, very nice thread!!

I'm trying to figure out if a x2-setup or 1xE would be possible for system: acer aspire 5738ZG.

When opening the bottom cover I can see two mpci-e ports. As I swapped my wifi card (from p2) it showed up on p3.
My understanding is that I can't use p2+p3 for a x2 setup?

Since p3 are free, maybe a 1xE could be done if p4 is empty (and physically connected)?
What is/could be the advantage of x1E over 1x and how do I implement it?

Thanks in advance.
Regards,

/Niclas

EDIT: If x1E would be possible on port3, would that force p1 to be x2 which would disable p2 (where my wifi is connected)?

Sorry for replying late.

Because of design (Intel chipset) limitation, you can't do x2 link setup with p2+p3. You can do x1E setup using ATI or older Nvidia desktop GPU. Nvidia GT(S/X) 4xxx & onwards unable to take this advantage. Also because design limitation, when you enabled x1E on p3, p2 also disabled. Which means you can't use wifi when eGPU is connected.

Okay.
I have an Acer aspire 5732Z

Intel T4500 processor

Intel GMA4500M GPU

4GB RAM

Windows 7 64bit

Graphics rig:

PE4H 2.4a + PM3N

Zotac Geforce 210 Synergy edition 1GB DDR3

I plug everything in and get 3 green lights on the PE4H and a green and a red light on the PM3N in the mini PCI port that the wireless card used to use.
If I start the pc with the whole rig plugged in, the PC doesn't start up at all. I get a black screen and the laptop just doesn't do anything.
If I plug it in after I have started up the PC, all the lights come on correctly and the card gets a bit warm, so I know it is receiving power, but the computer does not find the card. Even if I go into the device manager, searching for new hardware does not work.

What can I do?
I have no idea why it isn't finding the card.

Usually, even with low TOLUD, you can get Error 12 in Device Manager since the PCI space are, let say, scattered. For this, you can do PCI compaction using eGPU Setup 1.x. USD 25 license fee will be impose if you use eGPU Setup 1.x software with eGPU kit from any supplier other than HIT (Harmonic Inversion Tech).
Kizwan,

I've tried to purchase PE4H (& the included DIY Setup 1.x) from Harmonic Inversion Technology, but it seems they don't ship to Malaysia. Is there any other way to get the Setup 1.x software?

My experience with the Harmonic Inversion:
1. I registered
2. I added PE4H to my cart
3. I clicked "check out"
4. I selected shipping address to Malaysia, and then I clicked "next"
5. In the select shipping method step, no shipping method listed in the page
6. I couldn't proceed further

Later, I tested by using false address in USA. In the select shipping method step, several shipping methods are listed there. I concluded that HIT doesn't ship to Malaysia.

What should I do?

Regards,

Haris

Did you try contact them via phone or email? Most likely they will help you. Alternatively you can buy from www.hwtools.net from Taiwan but Setup 1.x is not included. Then you need to buy Setup 1.x from HIT for USD$25.

No, I haven't called them since I can't speak English fluently. However, I've already sent them 2 e-mails, but they haven't replied yet. sad.gif
I notice I can buy PE4H somewhere else, but it's the included setup 1.x that makes me "sticks" with HIT. From where did you get your copy of setup 1.x?

I got it while it was free back then. That is old version. The newer version have all bugs fixed & have a lot of improvement. Try contact nando4, see if you can get a coupon code (discount) for Setup 1.x.

eGPU Configurations
A. PCIe x1 link.
This setup only require one PCIe x1 port. This can be either mPCIe port or ExpressCard (34mm/54mm) slot. There are two flavors of PCIe x1 link setup:-

  1. Raw PCIe x1 link setup.
Any notebooks can support this setup. However, eGPU will perform worst on any pre-Sandy Bridge (SB) notebooks with this setup. This is because of the PCIe x1 bandwidth on pre-SB notebooks is only 2.5Gb/s at each direction (5Gb/s concurrent). eGPU will perform better on SB notebooks because PCIe x1 link speed is 5Gb/s at each direction (10Gb/s concurrent). However, SB notebooks can only utilized this using newer PE4L v2.0 or PE4H v3.0 which will be available soon (Jan/Feb 2012).

  2. PCIe x1 + Optimus = x1.Opt or x1.2Opt
Opt=Optimus will provide PCIe data compression which boost performance over PCIe x1 link. Optimus only possible if your notebook have either active Intel GMA 4500MHD or Intel HD Graphics or Intel HD 3000 or Intel GMA x3150 (e.g. Asus Eee PC 1015PEM netbook) iGPU. Combination with either of these iGPU & Nvidia Fermi (Nvidia GT4xx, GTS4xx, GTX4xx & above) desktop graphic card, you will be able to do x1.Opt setup. x1.Opt will provide way better performance than raw PCIe x1 link setup. It's equivalent to PCIe x2 link setup & on certain games, way better. You also will be able to get acceleration on internal LCD but the performance will almost half because graphic card need to transmit the frames through PCIe x1 link, the same link which notebook use to transmit data to eGPU for processing. The PCIe data compression provided by Optimus will reduced/eliminate any lags during gaming. You will get full performance if using external monitor (~80% compared to desktop).

SB notebooks chipset support PCIe 2.0 5Gb/s x1 link. The performance is equivalent to PCIe 2.5Gb/s x4 link. The PCIe 2.0 5Gb/s compliant kit will be available soon (Jan/Feb 2012).

B. PCIe x2 link.
This setup require two PCIe x1 ports. This can be either combination of ExpressCard + mPCIe slot OR two mPCIe ports. x2 link setup only possible with either of these combinations:-

  1. PCIe port#1 & port#2.
    OR

  2. PCIe port#3 & port#4.
    OR

  3. PCIe port#5 & port#6.

You can use AIDA64 software to check the PCIe port numbers, for example:-
user posted image

Remember, the PCIe port(s) that is/are reported "Empty" doesn't means they are available physically. You need to check them yourself. mPCIe port(s) usually located at the bottom of your notebook, in HDD/RAM compartment. For ExpressCard slot, you need to connect, for example, ExpressCard to eSATA/USB adapater to know the ExpressCard PCIe port number.

This is an example of x2 link connections; PCIe port#1 (WWAN) & port#2 (WLAN):-
user posted image
This setup provide performance equivalent to x1.Opt setup, except the internal LCD support/acceleration. External monitor is a must for this setup since notebook doesn't have compatible iGPU to project frames to internal LCD. You can use either ATiAMD or Nvidia graphic card for this setup.

C. PCIe x4 link.
This is rare setup. This setup require 4 PCIe x1 ports; PCIe port#1 + port#2 + port#3 + port #4 OR PCIe port#5 + port#6 + port#7 + port #8. Only some notebooks have PCIe ports arrangement that can support this setup, e.g. Dell Studio XPS 1645.
NOTE: x2 & x4 link setup are not possible on SB notebooks due to hardware/BIOS limitation.
ExpressCard (34mm/54mm)

Comparison between CardBus & ExpressCard. Only ExpressCard useful for eGPU.

eGPU vs. PCI space
eGPU will require 256MB of PCI space for it to work. TOLUD register defined available PCI space on notebooks. On some notebooks, TOLUD register is set too high which means there is not enough PCI space for eGPU. In this situation, the only way you can get eGPU to work is by reducing RAM to 2GB/3GB of RAM. With more RAM, eGPU will be detected but with Error 12 in Device Manager. To know the value set in TOLUD register, you can use Device Manager; set View to "Resources by connection" & expand the Memory tree; like this:-
user posted image

The first PCI bus with 8 digits memory address is what you're looking for. In the above example, the firs PCI bus with 8 digits memory address is 0xA8000000. The calculation is simple:-
0xA8000000 = 2818572288 (dec) bytes = 2818572288 / 1024 / 1024 / 1024 = 2.625 GB

As long as TOLUD is equal or lower than 3.25 GB, you will have no problem using eGPU & 4GB or more RAM. You can use this table for quick calculation:-

  • E0000000 = 3.5 GB

  • D0000000 = 3.25 GB

  • C0000000 = 3 GB

  • B0000000 = 2.75 GB

  • A0000000 = 2.5 GB

Usually, even with low TOLUD, you can get Error 12 in Device Manager since the PCI space are, let say, scattered. For this, you can do PCI compaction using eGPU Setup 1.x. USD 25 license fee will be impose if you use eGPU Setup 1.x software with eGPU kit from any supplier other than HIT (Harmonic Inversion Tech).

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
You can easily supercharged the ULV processor using ThrottleStop.

Anyway, kimchoo DIY eGPU setup is x1 link with Optimus which is better than PCIe x2 setup. With PCIe x2 setup the eGPU will perform roughly 80% from it actual capability. There is several video on youtube. You'd be surprise how well it perform on PCIe x2 or PCIe x1.Opt (with optimus).
