I'm a huge fan of good charsiew. drool.gif

So far I know a few only in Klang Valley:-

1. MengKee Charsiew in Glenmarie
2. Restaurant Oversea along Imbi Road
3. Canton-i outlets
4. Sun Ming Kee in Taman Connaught (this place is famous for its duck though)
5. Wantan meen stall in a Coffeeshop in Taman Yew Lek (forgot the name of coffeeshop)

Anybody knows anywhere else I can get good charsiew?

I like charsiew that melts in the mouth when you eat it.

The best 'char siew' I have tried is Overseas Restaurant in Imbi Road, no doubt about it but at RM120 per kilo, it's expensive. Other than that there's one in Taman Salak South in front of 7-11 there. This place have to eat in as their 'char siew' hardens if tapowed because of the maltose. The 'char siew' is tasty though. Sun Ming Kee is so so only and also Fatt Kee in front of Pudu Plaza, the 'char siew' is also so so only as both of these specialises in roasted duck.

They say the roasted duck in Kong Meng in Taman Maju Jaya near Shamelin is good but suprisingly I find the duck so so but their 'char siew' and roasted pork belly is nice thumbup.gif The 'porr li char siew' in Jalan Pudu also is not so nice anymore, probably because the brothers have splitted up.

The char siew fan in Jalan Alor is well known.
I would give it 7 out of 10.

etigge, the Overseas Restaurant in Imbi, how much do they sell roast pork per kilo? Isetan KLCC prices it at RM69/K.

I think you mean the 'char siew fan' in Jalan Tong Shin. I don't recall any in Jalan Alor that is nice. Personally I never tried it but seen the stall with racks and racks of 'char siew'. Hard to find parking there. Or probably if I wanted to eat there, I prefer eating the beef noodle there laugh.gif Roasted pork at RM69 per kilo is cheap, are you sure? Because a kilo of pork belly is already RM25 to RM30. Factor in the gas/coal, seasonings, labouring near high heat and the 30% shrinkage, that's cheap.

Please don't mix up 'siew pye' with 'siew chee'. Siew chee is the roasted whole pig which is cheaper and 'siew pye' is roasted pork belly which is the most expensive part of the pig. I get into many arguments with those ignorant 'ah sou's when they buy. They don't back down too laugh.gif I don't know the price in Overseas for roasted pork, sorry.

Not in Klang Valley, but there is this place in Petaling Jaya (Happy mansion). The char siew is very nice (and also the roasted chicken). It's so famous that the char siew is usually sold out by 12.30pm (sometimes even 12pm already finish). So, usually people will sms to "book" the char siew first. Price-wise, is slightly expensive I think. RM6.50 for a plate of char siew rice (can't remember how much is it for just char siew). If you want the phone number, just PM me. smile.gif

mind you you need to go early as the waiting time is epic and thefood finishes damn fast

however it probably has one of the best non-expensive char siews in town

The tin-roof shop in Tong Shin has shifted to the other end of Alor (further away from Sungai Wang), since quite a few years ago.

yes, RM69/k for siu yeuk (roast pork) at Isetan KLCC is correct. RM69/K is cheap?? i thought that is expensive. Relative told me in small towns (e.g. outside Klang Valley), the price is around RM30/k but this was a few years ago. About a year ago, PJ section 14 in a supermarket was selling it at around RM60/k. But complaints from muslim customers forced them to stop roasting on the premises. Even MidValley you will find it hard to find them. Jusco used to roast on their premises but they also no longer do it.

I think you can easily find the location from Google maps by searching for Happy Mansion, Section 17. The shop's name is Restaurant Choon Yien. It's opposite the former 6 to 10 Grill & Nasi Lemak (shifted to Aman Suria already).

I might be wrong, but is this the corner coffeeshop that sells the wantan mee and chicken rice with fantastic charsiew? I think the husband operates the chicken rice stall where as the wife operates the wantan mee stall. Both uses the same charsiew.

its easy to get there.
if you coming from sg besi, go to the mines shopping mall. drive straight all the way into balakong.
this shop used to be under an old wooden shed looking shop but they moved to a new shoplot which is located opposite to nissan service center.
well, not exactly opposite but rather the row behind.
so if you coming from the same road, the shoplot will be on your left (obviously nissan SC on your right). go around the shoplot and you'll see the only restaurant selling "siew lap" (chicken, duck, etc)
oh... their duck is good too...

IS there one there? Is it near the Lan Che steam fish? I thought the famous roasted duck and char siew (siew lap) in Cheras 11th mile is near the traffic lights junction to Silk highway. At the traffic lights go straight on towards the village and the stall is just on the right hand side after the traffic lights. It is actually the former worker for Sun Meng Kee in Taman Connaught. It is quite busy too. icon_rolleyes.gif

Rice dishes like Barbeque Pork on Rice, known in Thai as Kow Moo Dang, are classic Thai lunch fare. In a noodle shop, you will find tall green onions sitting in a jar full of vinegar on your table, waiting for your Kow Moo Dang. Take a bite of kow moo dang and munch on green onion at the same time.

Tell me which shop in KL can beat Sunrise and Loong Foong, i would go there the first thing in the weekend. Sunrise is so totally awesome! And freaking crowded too!!

Sorry off topic.

There a Meng Kee at Jalan Alor. Next to Nova Hotel. Operates from a stall at a coffee shop. It's as expensive but worth it.

I personally tried Meng Kee Char Siew and it's nice but I don't like the way they force customers to order chickens together with Char Siew. They deny any single Char Siew order. Anyone here tasted their chicken? It's salty!

For my personal preference, I prefer Ah Khai's Char Siew located at Mei Yen, Seksyen 20, PJ. He has now shifted to Restaurant Mei Yen instead of Simon's Delights (The Chicken and Char Siew stall at both Simon Delight and Mei Yen bear the same uniform so please do not make a mistake).

I love char siew too. Haven't try the one at Restaurant Overseas Imbi, coz dunno 1 plate will cost how much. There's a stall at Jalan Peel, which serve delicious char siew and Braised Pork Knuckle. It's located along the Shell Petrol Station at Jln Peel. The stall name is Jia Jia Lai. I've attached a link for easy reference: http://klchin.blogspot.com/2011/02/jalan-p...raise-pork.html
Open on weekends.

Another stall selling good char siew will be at a chinese coffee shop name Uncle Meng. At this shop, got many other stalls and one of it is selling chicken rice/char siew rice. It is located at Taman Shamelin Perkasa. If u know the cafe Pat Kin Pat San which is at the front row, then this chinese shop is located at the end of the row. U'll see this Uncle Meng shop, and the char siew only available around 11.30am onwards till sold out. Not open on Sunday.

U meant Jln Peel stall or Uncle Meng stall? I didn't eat the char siew at Jln Peel for quite some time d (more than a year ago), but the last time i eat, the char siew is tasty and especially the braised pork is delicious. As for Uncle Meng's stall, my parents tar pau almost once a week, i eat a bit of the char siew, and taste just nice. I like roasted meat (siew yoke, roasted duck, char siew), just wondering where got stalls/shop which sells good roasted meat at night (still available after 8 or 9pm) around KL/Cheras area, anyone knows? Coz most stalls will close after lunch time or some shops also close by 7, 8pm.

Went to Meng Kee, Jalan Alor on Monday for lunch.

2 portion of char siew and chicken + 1 plate of vege = RM32!!

Although it is good, it doesn't mean you can do a daylight robbery on your customers. The place is barely filled. How many people can afford this price for lunch? Not coming back. Ever.

Very pricey! the last time i went there was nearly a year ago. RM7 for a plate of charsiew rice. It was like 6 or 7 very thin slices. There weren't that many people there on a Saturday afternoon. IMO, overhyped and overpriced. I think it's the same everywhere now in the Klang Valley. You don't get what you paid for.

Again still ~ RM45+..darn...min per pax >RM15...walau eh.
Anyway agreed their Charsiew is superb but the rice & chicken so-so only.

The operators usually victimised those that orders for the whole group. They might overcharge as there may be some customers that fight for the bill and when this happens, they won't scrutinise the bill. Remember those days in Old Klang Road seafood restaurants (at the junction of Taman Desa). You fight for the bill and then suddenly you are overcharged RM10 to RM15 and sometimes a pack of Marlboro is inserted in the bill. laugh.gif Happens nowadays, in Chee Xiang, 11th mile Cheras, I ordered a quarter duck and 'char siew + siew yoke' and three rice. Asked for the bill and it was RM46.00, I paid it and then did the maths as it was itemised and I was overcharged RM10.00. My wife went back and ask the 'see tow porr' to calculate again and she just opens the drawer and flash out ten bucks and returned it to my wife without looking and apologised. So, it proves that it is pre-meditated. laugh.gif

Just go back to ordering single orders. Two ask for 'duck thigh', two orders 'char siew', and two orders 'siew yoke and when the food comes, push all the meat into the centre of the table. Total, usually RM36.00 for all plus rice thumbup.gif If you orders for all, the bill might come to over RM50.00 to RM60.00 plus rice. The former set up still leaves a lot of money to re order and re order again. Or maybe add two more double boiled soup and a green, it should be enough for six anyway. Might look cheapskate but then they were the unscrupulous ones. icon_rolleyes.gif

But if you go in a group and the purpose to try all, you can actually order all-in one for each person wor..That's how they simply charge...i.e They dun go per pax at this rate but when you order all, They charge 3 pas charsiew, 3 pax siew york & 3 pax Siew kai..Therefore everytime >RM40 wan..darn..

Unless I specify. all 1 person each!!

i will always order individual servings even though go in groups whenever i eat char siew.

on a sidenote, anyone tried the char siew at seapark? The shop used to be opposite Seaview restaurant but has now shifted to the middle "corner" shop.

The char siew there is super awesome. Very different from conventional char siew. The head chef used to work in HK then came to Malaysia and now has gone to US to open shop. He got PR to go there to start business.. Now the kong fu has been transferred to his disciple.

You cannot be serious. I went there on Saturday exactly at 11.30am. The owner and the staff appears to be watching tv. Totally no customer. As soon as he noted me, everyone sprung into action. I ordered one Char Siew rice kar liu.

How much i paid? RM7!! Only RM7!! I swear the portion of char siew is as much as Meng Kee served. In fact i've chosen half lean half fat parts which is so so so nice!

Thumbs up for Ah Khai. Good char siew with very reasonable price.

its easy to get there.
if you coming from sg besi, go to the mines shopping mall. drive straight all the way into balakong.
this shop used to be under an old wooden shed looking shop but they moved to a new shoplot which is located opposite to nissan service center.
well, not exactly opposite but rather the row behind.
so if you coming from the same road, the shoplot will be on your left (obviously nissan SC on your right). go around the shoplot and you'll see the only restaurant selling "siew lap" (chicken, duck, etc)
oh... their duck is good too...
*
I was looking for this stall and was thinking it was Chee Xiang. I finally found out that the one mentioned here is Sim Kee Restoren and they are the ones shifted over from the traffic lights. The traffic lights are not the same operators and they started after Sim Kee mleft. Sim Kee is not located opposite Nissan Center but actually they are now located exactly behind Milwaukee Steak House and a few doors from Lan Che Steam Fish. I have tried Sim Kee and found that the duck is also not as good as Sunrise or Fatt Kee in Pudu and the char siew and siew yoke, still the one near Shamelin Perkasa is better.

OK tried liao that chicken rice stall inside the kopitiam at the back of Alliance bank Sri Muda. So-so only lah..very common just like any other koptiam style chicken rice. Char siew very dry & cannot even beat the Aman Suria Seremban char siew which is 4th in row of others such as Ah Khai (Paramaount), Meng Kee (Glenmarie & Spring Golden also in Sri Muda...However, atleast this one charging normal food court pricing char siew & not fiome dining pricing char siew as what other Super famous char siew haha

Ah Khai has left that stall and give to someone to run the business already.
Rumor is that he has left the country to pursue a better career prospect in United States. sweat.gif

Awesome char siu at Bandar Menjalara. Same row as De Pastry but at the other end. One plate of char siu rice cost RM6.50, by far the best I had.

Dear all char siew lover, I'm not the advertising this restaurant. But please try this char siew before u judge whos better. I eat char siew for so many years, I haven ate any char siew better then this restaurant here.

As I said, I'm not advertising so I did not memories the name of this restaurant. Its beside the Magnum 4D store on the same row shop. Its easy to find, only 1 old Chinese restaurant here with old uncle chopping the char siew near the restaurant door. flex.gif

If u don't believe, go there taste it & proof me wrong rolleyes.gif

Definitely the Spring Golden Restaurant opposite NSK Sri Muda. Literally melts in your mouth, always have stock (they kept roasting charsiew at the back and bring to front), quick service, not too crowded, can have as much charsiew as you want, no mix.

Meng Kee at Glenmarie no fight, small portion, must mix with chicken/roast pork, slippery/yucky floor, too crowded.

meng kee in jln alor (now manned by the dad), The original was at the Lot nearer to the condo/hospital, off jln alor then now located to the current stall/shop along jln alor itself. (opposite Ah Weng's jln alor) The old man is approaching is latter years, so the chopping of the meat (he still is the expert) may be slower. Always best to get it just as they open for the day. Really.

meng kee in glenmarie (his daughter/family)

meng kee in kuchai entrepauners park (brother/family)

Thats was told by their daughter or along those lines when we had our meal at the glenmarie outlet. Which was how we found out and were given the Kuchai outlet flyer (then when they just opened their Kuchai branch). But the original Kuchai's concept intended was suppose to be slightly different to the glenmarie outlet. (not sure if its still maintained). Don't know where we kept the flyer.

Not sure of the kota kemuning's meng kee or cheras connaught. We haven't chatted with the owners for some time. Remember the Chinese has so many ah fook, ah kau, ah loy etc. so don't be surprise that some may just cash in. just like Heng's Bak Kut teh, or ah Heng's Bak Kut teh. There are stories of the original.

I do find the glenmarie the best since its the largest outlet & a steady stream of customers ensure just 'ready' char siew's, followed by the jln alor. Wasn't impressed by the Kuchai's outlet as they seemed 'indifferent' & seemingly smaller portions that seemed to maximise profit.

Standard at glenmarie is still good BUT ensure its just before large lunch crowd, which we normally do. No guarantee that ones personal 'satisfaction' is entertained if there are so many hunger people all wanting the same thing. tongue.gif

As always the 'best cuts' fly out really fast (glenmarie). Once we came the later part of lunch we found the bits a bit drier, as with all the good bits layered of juicy fat all snapped up.
This business is always about the old-school-type of business, one need to know 'just' when to drop in tongue.gif for the best char siew in town.

if the charsiew enter ur mouth, u taste lotsa sugar..then the sifu not enug kungfu edi...no more good charsiew around..sad..

the one at jalan peel..beside the petrol station use to be good but now the quality dropped as well..same too much sugar, covered the pork taste as well as the fragrance the charsiew suppose to delivery in ur mouth..

selection of pork is important..where the pork is from..frozen pork is no deal..also sometimes the chef cook with the same method, same recipe, same ingredient..

but..the ingredient changed..what i mean is, simple ingredient like soy sauce, black soy sauce, the manufacturer/factory changed their quality or maybe the bean that they use is different now..all these does affect the end product of any food...

so, sometimes we heard the chef said, i didnt change my recipe..all is the same..

prolly he didnt notice the changes in the ingredient cause he is
cooking the same thing everyday..and if the ingredient quality deteriorate slowly overtime, i bet no chef could really notice it coz he is using is daily.. unless a pro notice that and told him about it..

one dont taste sugar char siew but i know how's it's made, rather many mums (mine too) & many cooks too has charsiew recipes. i know the process which is why i mentioned. (not because i tasted sugar char siew) cool2.gif

Usually the combo of several does make one stand or not stand out against each other but the core recipe is 95%++ same across cool2.gif

It's not really sugar, well not totally. Some add sugar to lessen the cost. Usually it is maltose syrup that should be used. I have tasted 'Char Siew Chai', Tian Hong, Meng Kee, also there's one in Yulek where the husband sells it and the wife sells 'wanton mee', Also Kong Meng near Shamelin is also good. My opinion, Tian Hong in Salak South Garden is good provided you don't 'tapau' because once you 'tapau' the maltose hardens and gets very hard. Best bet is Kong Meng, although they specialise in roast duck but their 'char siew' is better. icon_rolleyes.gif

crispy skin, duck itself is just normal.

They will cut out the skin to eat in Peking style (wrapping), rest of it they will serve as normal roasted duck.

can opt for 1/2 or whole bird.

I love Meng Kee in Glenmarie but I haven't been there in such a long time. I know her father is the one who used to be on Jalan Tengakat Tong Shin but is allegedly not as good any more.

As for Overseas Restaurant it's not bad. But did you know that they actually don't make it themselves? They actually get it from another shop... but I've forgotten what the name of the place is already...
