Anyone here know why hamsters bite their cage?

My fren said because they were hungry.

Is it true? Btw, i have pair of winter white.

- Clearly shows that your friend doesnt have any experience before..

Hamsters bite their cage is because their bored, you could add some toys in it so they wont get bored, it can also cause them brain damages too, so if you see them chewing, prevent them or get them some new toys..

yup its quite serious, which is the main reason why i moved from cage to fish tank instead after reading more info about hamstesr. Nope wheel alone is not enough, need to buy additional toys & yes chewing sticks is good for them as well since it can help them to trim their teeth. Most importantly is spend couple of hours playing with them tongue.gif

yes, dwarves are prone to diabetes as well so don't give them too many. maybe 3 - 5 a day, it should not be their staple food. hard to resist though, they LOVE them kuaci

another reason could be the cage is too small for them. like the others said, chewing the bar can cause brain damage. if possible, move them to a none bar cage. get more floor space cage. the other reason they could be biting is the need to trim. their teeth are constantly growing so they have to trim it else it will grow long inwards towards their mouth causing them unable to eat. don't get the mineral chew, I thought it was good until I saw my hamster avoiding it and later found out it's actually bad for their kidney. you can get those small chewing logs from the pet store. also, as a cheaper alternative, give them the toilet paper roll core - hamsters love those and it's okay for them, just make sure it's not from scented tissue. a hamster needs a wheel, hideout and chewing toys. if they fight over the wheel, it's advisable to get another as one might get territorial over the wheel. same goes to hideouts.

you guys can get this: http://s.petco.com/assets/product_images/8/800443128275C.jpg

i bought 1 few months ago. It acts as a chewing toy for your hamster as well as a bridge so he can climb here & there or hide underneath depending on how you keep it. Take note though that all chewing sticks your hamster will use maybe for 1-2months? once the smell is gone they wont use it but my bridge still acts as a bridge smile.gif

not that cheap though wink.gif

i read an article bout body language of hamster.

biting the cage means they need to get your attention...bring them out to play and solve the prob. sometimes lazy to play with them.
