I am a Headphone kaki, new to speakers never had the chances to try aktimate mini. Btw is a slight improvement compare to the older version (AE5).

I am using audiogd nfb10se as my DAC/preamp. =D

my friend just auditioned the ae5 at tong lee lowyat, he told me the clarity is great but the bass is weak (he's basshead) and the uncle dont give a proper setup to ae5 to ensure its fully capabilities. The funny thing is, the uncle said to my friend that there is two types of ae5, one without built in sub and one with built in sub(LOLWUT??) and the price is rm1.9k per pair. LOL.

The aktimate Mini is alot better sounding than the AE5s and the AE5+.

The AE5s need a little room to 'breathe' in order to sound their best while the Aktimates can be used for nearfield or at a more relaxed distance.

They aktimates are deeper and taller than the AE5s however, makes things a little tricky to position, especially in a crowded deskspace.

The Aktimate Micro is my absolute favourite however. Smaller than the AE5s and bigger than the AE2. They are clearer and more detailed than the AE2s while their bass cannot match the Mini or AE5, they present bass in a more controlled and accurate manner, making the AE5s almost sound muddy. I've owned the AE5s and now the AE2 as well.

When I was in Melbourne I was a close friend of a retailer who stocked the Aktimates as well as some other speakers, and I visit his shop quite often for a chat and thus I'm exposed to his range of product as well. To me, the Aktimates are a pedigree above the Audioengines. But the Audioengines are no slouch as well, all highly recommended.

The focal XS book might be more expensive than that locally here given the price it already is overseas.

The XSbook looks kinda like the Creative T40 speakers which are very decent in their own right but nowhere near as good as a proper powered bookshelf speaker.

Focal however are a much more reputable audio brand that seems to be doing well as of late. Their Spirit One headphone is also getting alot of good rep.

1.8k is not too shabby considering the asking price in Aus is about 599 retail.

Hey wilzc, I Have not try akimate Mini. Looking forward to meet the beauty.

About AE5s, the speaker do need more rooms, I try borrowing some acoustic panels and places it at the back of the wall to minimize the bass by bouncing back to reduce the heavy or muddy bass (If you get what i mean).. I'll get use to it =)

i think XSbook is more to hi-fi speaker than creative t40....creative brand only prominent in dekstop speaker world....absolutely not same level as focal which is more to proper hi-fi...

yes...u true about XSbook is not near as a proper powered bookshelf speaker...but for quality & sound, i think it can achieve that level....because the price with perfomance ratio is acceptable by many audiophile...

in addition, proper powered bookshelf speaker give 1 big problem for me....my house is really small....also many neighbor beside....if use something powerful and big like that.....they will be some noise bothering them...especially the bass will shake the wall...if not great...

that y i want something that small...not powerful....but efficient and clear enough to replace my current speaker now....ae2....ae2 is good actually....if use with decent sound card....i use asus xonar dx....claimed as high-fidelity sound card(SNR 116db)....produce clear & beautiful sound...but the problem is....the woofer push too hard and distort a bit....it produce brr brrr brrrr krrr krrr noise.....haih...really anoyying... shakehead.gif

i got see about aktimate micro specification in their website....the amplifier is class D?? i think it is normal amplifier that use in dekstop speaker....how can they put lower class amplifier class in aktimate micro and sell it so pricey?? i think for the price they should provide class A or AB ampilfier....hmm....something that really make me curious....is the amplifier can affect the quality sound?? or not?

they also provide pcm2074....so the micro is built in dac powered speaker? and now my sound card will be useless??? correct if im wrong....

i think audioengine p4 is very good if pair with warm amplifier....because it more to bright sounding...NAD always make warm/bass heavy amplifier ....

audioengine always more focuse on smooth, soft and mid bass manner....and less about detail and clarity...however still punch a lot detail compare to mediocre speaker...so make sure it suit with ur taste...

Aktimate might be putting a DAC into the Mini as well.

If they can fit a USB DAC into the much smaller micro, they definitely can put one into the Mini and therefore there are plans for that, AFAIK, talking to the Australian distributors. Shouldn't be long now, I was told about this a few months ago.

But again the DAC won't be the best DAC you'll ever find, just functional and decent, like the ones in the Maxi and Micro.

For desktop purposes I feel the micro is insanely good.

I prefer them compared to the AE5s or the AE2s. The AE5s are more powerful but the micros have control, and a touch more power than the AE2s.

But it all really depends on personal preference, space and setup.
