Hmmm 🤔
Like that seem like wanna go device manager and disable to battery and then shout down

Go remove the bottom case and remove the battery connector.
Follow by use original charger plug in and power on without built in battery.
Login to window without built in battery And Then shout down again.
Put back the battery connection and power on login window will be auto detection the battery Drivers as well

I think you can also use the embedded OEM key if you're like me and refuse to create the outlook account. There's a powershell command (GIYF) to get it.
That's what I did. grabbed the OEM key. Wiped Windows, installed Linux, installed Windows in a virtual machine and activated with the OEM key.

Edit:
For bloatware removal, there's the popular Windows10Debloater script. I don't run Windows on bare metal so cannot comment on how good it is on a fresh ThinkPad with Windows preinstalled, but I have used it on my VM Windows installations, and it does a decent job.

Since you are installing linux you probably wipe out the entire disk right? if not the grub will taking place during the system startup. did you backup you system? I mean if something happen in future, and we need lenovo for warranty claim, should we worry about the OS? how can we recover the OS. Any disk cloning tool by lenovo, like norton ghost, etc. So that if something happened to our thinkpad we can quickly do the recovery before the technician comes. biggrin.gif

Before opening up the bottom lid maybe he can try to poke into the master reset hole at the bottom first while the system is on (eg; 1:30 of this video). I heard that sometimes doing that alone will solve certain power/charging related issues. If cannot, then can do what you suggest and open up the bottom.

Yes, I'll wipe the entire disk. No dual boot, since I like my flicker-free boot process (I use Fedora, btw) tongue.gif

You can check out Clonezilla or Norton Ghost if you really want to clone the installation. Beware that sometimes the version you clone won't work if you've updated the EC or BIOS firmware to a newer version, because certain firmware versions are designed to work with a certain version of Windows 10 or newer (eg: maybe a certain EC firmware ver 1.xx released in future only works with Windows 1907 update or later, but the version you cloned was Windows 1903).

Another (expensive but best) option is to open up the machine and replace the SSD. That way you can keep the original drive with the factory installed EvilCancerOS to insert back if need to warranty claim.

In all my years using ThinkPads, I've never had issues with warranty claims on Linux. Obviously the technician won't be able to provide software support for Linux, but hardware failure/replacement should not be affected in any way. Lenovo have a webpage listing the systems that support Linux after all, which you can always use as proof (just make sure your model is listed, and save the page as a long PDF) if you want to argue about your warranty claim. Besides, nowadays Lenovo has a hardware diagnostic tool in the BIOS (press Enter on boot and you'll see the option in the menu), so the tech can diagnose a system without even booting into any operating system. If the local Lenovo people make noise, I'll escalate the claim to an international department. If still cannot, I'll pay myself. After that I'll never buy another ThinkPad ever again. Simple.

I would rather get T480 for cheaper price consider it is older. No significant performance increament between T480 and T490.

Im using centos 7 on my x230 for many years. Havent encounter any issues (tried fedora before, too bleeding edge. my vpn keep crashing). I planing to use rhel8 or centos 8 on my t490, but I checked on Lenovo page t490 not certified yet for rhel 8. but t490s do.

btw, if lenovo technician doesn't require to access to the OS then shouldn't be issue if we are using any kind of OS. or just mention to them what OS we are using before they come to site for troubleshooting.

With VM you'll need more cores.... with Comet-lake (Ultra-portable Thinkpads) you can go up to 6 cores (12Ts).... With Coffee-Lake i9 or Xeon E you can go to 8 cores (16Ts) with both workstation Thinkpads and some Gaming variants

*
X390 running Fedora 30. Last time I tested 100% to 50% battery around 4.5hrs with browsing, coding (no compiling though) and a bit of bluetooth (320kbps mp3, aptX codec) music streaming to headphones. So a full 100% to 0% sitting should, in theory, get to the 9hr mark. This is without any TLP or undervolting. I just let the OS do it's thing. Fedora is already known for it's battery optimizations compared to other GNU/Linux distros. Waiting for Fedora 31 to be released next month before attempting any advanced power saving scripts or setting battery charge thresholds. One thing to note; if you're on Linux (full install over entire drive, not dual boot), you need to go to the BIOS and in the Thunderbolt settings you must enable the "Allow BIOS to manage Thunderbolt" or similar (forgot the exact name, but it's easy to find) setting. If you don't set that, the Thunderbolt I/O will have excessive wakeups and drain battery fast on Linux. Lastly, make sure to update BIOS and EC via fwupdmgr (or Gnome Software Center). Certain firmware updates via from LVFS/fwupd are Linux exclusive and aren't available on Vantage/Windows or the Lenovo support site. Also depends on the user to some extent. I've used Linux for long time, so I'm confident I can get most Intel laptops (no AMD or Nvidia) to last longer on Linux than Windows with the correct tweaks.

Another way is to remove the SSD before sending it in (for CCI) or before the technician arrives (for On-Site). You can just tell them your work is highly sensitive and you cannot let any third-party access to your storage.

Regarding distro, CentOS and RHEL are super stable server/corporate distros that don't always use the latest drivers or kernels. Are you a sysadmin or something? If Fedora or Arch are too bleeding-edge for your needs, maybe you can put something like Ubuntu 19.10 on it first until end of the year and let CentOS/RHEL catch up a bit with drivers and kernel modules.
