Come next week, you’ll be able to download Grand Theft Auto 3 for £2.99 on almost all recent iOS devices (iPad, iPad 2, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G), as well as a smattering of dual-core Android phones and tablets, including the LG Optimus 2X and Motorola Atrix. One device that won’t be however is the hugely successful and stupendouly powerful dual-core Samsung Galaxy S2.
It’s odd, because Rockstar originally said Grand Theft Auto 3 for mobile would launch on it. However, when asked, a spokesperson said that the company could now only confirm it would run on the models listed below, but would look to support additional models over time.
The reason likely lies in the dual-core processor used: Samsung’s Exynos 1.2GHz system on a chip flattens the competition in benchmarks, but that’s because the competition don’t use it. Instead, Rockstar appears to be supporting the Nvidia Tegra 2 chip used more widely. In other words, if you have the less powerful Samsung Galaxy R, you’ll be able to play Grand Theft Auto 3.
