guys, where can i go to test out (and buy?) 5N? went to a few camera shops in 1u but no stocks for 5N, only got 5.

is the 5N a good entry level for a first time owner? i've read good reviews about it. but when i tested out the 18-55mm? (the bigger lens) it doesn't zoom as far as i'd like. but if i take the zoom lens i only get a single lens which is the zoom itself (without the pancake) so i'm really not sure which to get.

appreciate your input.

Added on November 1, 2011, 2:05 ami take a combination of party pictures / people (better use of pancake?) and buildings / architecture / objects which sometimes really need to zoom in close close. i would've preferred a pancake + zoom lens combination but that doesn't seem to be available or am i mistaken?
*
Sony Style at the Curve has the 5N for testing. But I recommend heading to Sungei Wang, Boeing Photo to purchase, as their prices are much cheaper (+tripod, bag, SD Card, Screen Protector, HAGGLE).

First time owner or a interchangeable lens camera, or first time owner of a camera? If you're upgrading from a P&S, the 5N is a good choice, quality and price wise. You'll have to deal with changing lenses and lens / sensor cleaning, but that comes with every ILC.

Generally the 18-55 is a good all rounder. If you need a longer focal length, your choices would be the 18-200 or the 55-210, which are sold seperately. If budget is an issue, pick up the 55-210 and pair it with your 18-55. Otherwise, just buy the 18-200 and leave it on forever. In any case, I recommend getting the twin lens kit. It's only about RM300 more than a single lens set.

For the type of shots you intend to do, the 16mm will prove to be better generally (wide angle). Don't see you lugging around the NEX+18200 doing party shots tongue.gif Very impractical if you're in the midst of partying.

Pancake zooms are not available at the moment for the E-mount. If you're concerned about lens sizes, check out the micro 4/3rds cameras.

How many of you can realize the different between 1080p vs 720p?? simple question if we see the theory, but in REAL LIFE, how many of us will know??

actually i have some dilemma, i like Sony NEX-5N but too expensive, so a bit lower is Sony NEX-5 or Sony NEX-C3, i use DSLR before but want to smaller my "Weapon" so i look after micro 43 or this E-mount series.. after doing survey and research, i found that E-mount series spec is more DSLR look alike in the micro 43 body (perfect combination!). C3 More cheaper with 720p Video but better photo quality, Nex5 is mid price but it got 1080p with lower photo quality, NEX-5N the best but expensive.. i'm still life photographer, candid freaks, but need to make some clip sometimes.. smile.gif of course my movie not played in theater, only for documentation.. so which one i should take?? prefer as cheap as it can..

With the 5N you have manual video controls, meaning you can adjust the shutter speed to achieve that cinematic effect (1/50 ss @ 25p) in your videos. You can also record in 50p or 25p, which is way more important than being able to record in 1080 or 720. With the C3 you are stuck at 29.

hmph.. about 24fps support it quite great feature too also more high tech gadget, more long lasting the price will stable.. smile.gif but 5N just quite bit expensive.. anyway, i just realize that the camera market just like Handphone market, they have AP product too.. haha.. think to get some AP NEX 5N if come with great price..
*
Not really "high-tech", just a great feature to have, so that your clips don't come out looking like handphone video. Don't recommend getting AP set for 5N... if you get a "click" unit and want to exchange it, you'll be having problems. In general, try and get local warranty. Interchangeable lens cameras are a lot more fragile. Imagine your focal plane shutter breaking down or getting stuck, and having to fork out hundreds of RM instead of getting it repaired for free.

hahaha alright, sorry.. biggrin.gif actually i like to be original, but i've bad experience with sony camera (sorry a bit out of topics) long time ago (looks like a story teller?? haha) my firs sony cam is DSC F717. that time dslr not really popular and really expensive, so i chose DSC F717 cos it's look DSLR alike but lens can't be change, of course the spec is really high at the moment (5mp is great lah for digital cam at that time) sure original n warranty 1yr. JUST AFTER 1 YEAR, maybe pass 2-3 days, than suddenly the LCD live view become pinkish.. even the result not pinkish, so i try my luck to claim with sony (hope not expensive if i need to pay), unfortunately he charge me almost 1000RM and that time the price of DSC F717 already drop to 1600-1700RM so i cancel to repair it an keep in the drawer.. sad.gif bad experience that make me "anti-sony" product.. even laptop, home electronic, etc, just Phone that i can accept..

now i want to buy sony again 1st. i like the spec, 2nd, my wife is sony FREAKS (before we married, after, i hypnotist her to become anti sony hahaha, just kidding..)

all here love NEX series, but anybody here have bad experience with it?? just want to hear the worst before decided to buy..  rclxub.gif
*
So sorry for your experience, but don't let one bad experience mar your image of a brand smile.gif Same goes with everything else. The F717 was a great zoom camera during it's time.

I've used the 5 for almost a year now, and have had zero problems with it. If you buy original from Sony, warranty is 12+6 if I remember.

Thanks for the detailed piece of info bro. I'm a (soon to be) first time owner of an interchangeable lens camera. In fact was shopping around for a cheap DSLR when I saw this and thought it suited me more. I wouldn't mind buying the zoom lens separately, but was told by the salesman it costs almost RM3000 for the lens alone. He gave me the option to take the camera with zoom lens only for the same price / slightly higher than I would for the dual lens.

How much do these zoom lenses really go for? I might go with the pancake and a 18-200?
*
The SEL18200 costs about RM2200-2300. NEX5 kit costs about RM2800-2900. There isn't a NEX5N kit with the SEL18200 yet. Salesman was giving wrong information to push sales... which shop is this? Do let us know.

SEL1855 lens only costs RM899 from Sony, minus 50-100 street. NEX5N dual kit street price is RM2599 at Boeing Photo, Sg. Wang.

On another note, it's November! I'm crossing my fingers and praying so hard that some vendors will receive some NEX7 stock! Just ten more days to official availability... so tension!!!!!!!

I was actually refer to the NEX5, sorry for the misinformation. The salesman wasn't deliberately pushing sales. The thing is I'm not sure if the zoom lens would be all that useful. I remember playing with a friend's camera (his is a NEX5 and he bought the zoom lens) and was really impressed by it. I tried out the 1855 and it can't really zoom very much, afraid I will find it insufficient when I need to zoom. Otherwise I would've had no qualms with the 5N + dual kit. Decisions, decisions... If the 5N came in a zoom lens bundle I would've probably gotten that already.. can I expect that bundle anytime soon?
*
Ah, thanks for clearing that up.

Basically with the 18200, you never need to change lenses. That's the ease of use part. It's got excellent image quality as well, and video with it is great (it was made intentionally for video, Active OSS). You wouldn't need the 1855 as it covers that range, and some would argue that 18mm focal length is enough for wide angle shots. If zoom is an issue for you, and budget isn't, go for it. The only drawback I see with the SEL18200 is size.

Don't know about the zoom bundle, there has been no news. Previously there was a rumor, but... *silence*

You can also purchase the NEX-5N body only, and buy the SEL18200 separately. But body only is very hard to find it seems. It's worth taking a look around Sg. Wang and Lowyat.

The cheaper filter brands will produce more flare.

Just got a call from Sony. They told me the NEX-7 availability date is not confirmed at the moment, and there will be a delay due to the flood in Thailand. Looks like got to wait a long time...

My original question to Sony Support was to ask if the Camera will be available in this month of November, specifically 11/11/11 (ship date and international availability). He said no, not so soon, probably not this month even for Malaysia. Well! Just have to hang on a bit more...

How much do you think it will cost? Hopefully much cheaper then 18200

Seeing how Sony Malaysia raised the price of the 30M35 macro over here, I'm guessing the 55210 will cost about RM1100-1200. Will still be much cheaper than the 18200.

Wish it is true as it will be 50% the price of 18200.

BTW how much is the marco lens? I asked around but no shop seem to stock it, most only have 18200
*
Macro is RM899-999. RM999 is Sony price.

International price is USD250... converted = RM775

Hey all, just picked up a Raynox DCR-250. For those who are interested in macro, but do not want to fork out 899 for the SEL30M35, here are some samples of the Raynox mounted on my Sony 50/1.8 and Mino 135/2.8. It works great on the kit as well, which I will test out later.

The DCR-250 costs only RM250, really cheap for excellent results. These are just test shots, that I did immediately after buying the adapter. I didn't have adequate lighting, so all shots are at ISO 3200. 100% crops at bottom right corner.

hi axii, nice one there.

can the raynox fits on 49mm thread? or do you need a step-up/step-down ring?

where to get it in klang valley?
*
The adapter specs are for 52mm to 67mm, but I managed to get it on 49mm without any problem.

I bought this at the forums. Not sure where to get it in shops.

Thanks for the reply but I don't understand if the specs are for 52mm-67mm, how can it fit our 49mm? Mind to share more on this? Cheers
*
The adapter is similar to a push cap. Wide open it will fit a max of 67mm. The macro lens is screwed onto this adapter, and then fitted onto the lens filter thread. If you search on youtube, there's quite a few videos on the Raynox DCR-250.

Like I said, the specifications are 52mm, but it actually fits onto 49mm without a problem, just a little tight. You just have to take extra care fitting it on and removing it so you don't damage your threads.

Does not apply to me. Not gonna use it with RF wides.

Sad for a lot of people anticipating to use the 7 with M lenses though. The DPReview forums, they are crying and bleeding.

Was at Boeing Sg. Wang early looking for some stuff. They have the 5N body only smile.gif But now only have black. Asked about the 30M35 macro, they told me final price now RM950. Because of flood...?

No one has the LA-EA-2 in stock. Only place with it now is Sony Centres / Style.

Also asked a few shops if they can get any NEX-7s... all answered "no way". When I ask? "Maybe February? Also cannot confirm.. maybe even later,"

If vendors in Sg. Wang are to be believed, February 2012.

NEX-7 Compared to NEX-5 Pros:
1) Better user interface (Tri-Navi)
2) Pop-up Flash
3) Built-in EVF
4) Sony Hotshoe
5) 24MP
6) External Mic-Input
7) Better low ISO performance

NEX-7 Cons:
1) Lower High ISO performance
2) Slightly larger and heavier (1cm H/W)
3) No Smart Accessory Port
