Hmm.. DDLs aren't affected for me so far... although i do have a 4Meg connection and a 175.xxx address..

1.11 pm and full speed ahead for me for RS, Fsc and the usual suspects...

I believe I have asked this question before, but anyways...

Let's say my area has Streamyx 4Mbps coverage (haven't check, but assume it does since Unifi is available). In order to upgrade from my current RM88 1Mbps package, what are the steps needed (e.g need to go to TM Point terminate current subscription, etc.)

1. What are the procedure that will take place/technician needed at home?
2. Also, how long does it take for the upgrade?
3. Is there a contract for 4Mbps subscription? If terminate, got penalty or not?
4. Can I ever get back to RM88 package?

I am maxing out at 120kbps, I believe quadrupling the speed or close to it is going to benefit a lot. RM88 vs RM140 is additional RM52 which isn't too bad.

If too much work (well obviously not like Unifi), I will just continue using my 1Mbps which I am fine with.

It's very simple actually..

Go to your nearest TMPoint.. you don't have to terminate your current account.. ask for availability of 4Mbps in your area, they will check your number in the database for ports..

If it's a go, then you'll have to fill up some forms, have it stamped by the counter people, ouh and make sure to photostat your IC, (account holder's IC) beforehand...

The port will be activated within 3 - 5 working days (took 4 days for my own upgrade).. All work done on their side, what will happen is that they alter the stats of your line (DS/US SNRs and port speeds) to support 4 Mbps.. Also in between the upgrade you will not lose Internet connection, only briefly as they change your port to the faster one...

Technician will come to check on your line for line stats and to tick the requisite boxes for have the minimum acceptable quality but will do nothing else... He will also hand you a new D-Link router (you can still use your own hardware though, no need to use their inferior router/modem combo if you don't want to)....

New contract will be in place when you hand in your forms previously and they confirm availability of the speed on your number/area...

I'm not sure whether you'd wanna downgrade to old package....

New speeds depend on how much the cap your line during the upgrade.. If you're lucky you get capped at 5120kbps.. if not it's just 4096 kbps... given line and PPPOE overhead you lose 10% of the speed so the actual DL speeds for a 4 Meg line is about 438kBps tops....

Hope that helps... and yes, for that limited hassle, it's worth it in my opinion... been on it for a year+ and i don't ever see myself going back to 1 Meg ever again.... Speeds are quite consistent for my area, and (mostly) great...

Although if you want the next step.. UNIFI is the way to go for low latency gaming needs...

Wow, incredibly well explained. Thanks a lot. Really convincing to move to 4Mbps... Peak at 438kbps is a staggering increment from my top 120kbps.

I believe the slowness encountered by 4mbps Streamyx users is due to congestion caused by sharing the same ip blocks with Unifi users.

Weeks ago I complained that 145.142.x.x ip range were always slow but a Unifi user-MX510 told me that they were getting the same ip range without any issue. Everything's just fast on their side.

My conclusion is placing 4mbps Streamyx users on the same pool as Unifi users will always leave the Stremyx users to the dust allowing us to only getting the remains which is ain't fair.We pay more than RM149 considering we do not enjoy symmetrical/true 5mbps speeds + IPTV.

Why?
The answer is this: If you pit an equally fast say symmetrical 1mbps FTTH line against a symmetrical 1mbps ADSL line both to contend against each other on a 1mbps internet gateway, if both sides request for a file from the same side file hosting side, the FTTH line will suck all bandwidth resources leaving nothing for the Streamyx line on copper. The reason is due to the different access times and overheads between 2 mediums.

That being said, as a Streamyx copper user we are always at the losing end for sharing the same gateway as Unifi users. They should have separated the gateways for the 2 different services in the first place or at least implemented some sort of QoS to differentiate them.

[EDIT]

This might also explain why the <1mbps Streamyx users have more consistent speed lines than 4mbps users. They are not sharing the SAME IP-Core network as Unifi users.

If you noticed, the premium users that is also shared between UNIFI and 4mbps Streamyx users are not given to lower end packages. Those lower end Streamyx users do not use the same ip blocks as so called premium 4mbps ADSL users.

OK, last night after 11pm suddenly my 1Mbps was "super fast" - - everything loaded extremely fast from YouTube, to Google (yes Google, since sometimes Streamyx slow to load!) to CNN.com (my personal benchmark site). It loaded almost instantaneously. 720p streaming on 1Mbps was possible on Youtube (pause for 10-15 seconds then play). IP was 117.xxx.xxx

Then this morning try again.... boom! Normal speed again. :-( Everything crawling. Decided to continue P2P downloads. Maybe it was a 'capless' window moment or a unique time period when everything was normal again.

Later this morning what was your IP then?

If possible, you can try obtaining an IP which is not used by Unifi users. Probably that'll ease the congestion quite a bit.

So far IP blocks that are known to be NOT shared with Unifi users are:

218.111.x.x
175.145.x.x (not sure please confirm)
60.48.x.x (not sure please confirm)

Streamyx users who share resources with Unifi will be at the losing end because they always get the leftovers due to the FTTH "pull" factor. **Avoid if possible.**
