As of 1.15pm screamyx is still slow to certain sites and services:-

e.g. European sites and filehosters...

Hmm is it just me or did TMNUT Streamyx just suffer intense latency spikes to ALL locations.. Started at 3pm-ish

To local sites:-

Pinging google.com.my [209.85.175.104] with 32 bytes of data:

To Europe:-

Reply from 212.58.241.131: bytes=32 time=1063ms TTL=243

To US:-

Pinging cnn.com [157.166.255.18] with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

What the heck is going on!?!?!?!

P.S. I'm wired to the router via Gig-E, LAN has no ping problems (<1ms latency).. also i'm on the 175.x.x.x address at TTDI using 4Mbps connection

EDIT:- Nvm, back to normal now.. must've been a minor breakdown at the local DSLAM

Seems to be okayish for now..

Speeds to major filehosters based in the US is (almost) back to normal..

getting 4xx kBps from the big ones...

Surprisingly European Filehosters seem to be unaffected earlier today..

Hmm.. dls are going full speed ahead atm...

NL and Fsc @ 400+ KBps... using JDownloader

Pretty lucky tonight i guess...

You seem to be onto something here...

While the total cumulative DL speeds i get can reach 4xxKBps from Filehosters, it seems i need to queue a quite few up and run them simultaneously to reach the maximum speeds..

Else i get only 50 - 60 kBps per file..

TL:DR, need to run 8-10 dls at once to fully load the line to 4xx KBps

Noticed something interesting with the behaviour of the dl speeds..

It varies from file hoster to file hoster...

FSC single dls seem to be really affected badly especially in the day time (<30kBps) but NL seems to be untouched.... getting nice 4xx kBps from NL all day long... both on premium accounts no less

Perhaps it's on a regional basis?

All speeds are good for now at 8.17 am MST...

DDLs from NL, FSC and MU are running at 4xx kBps....

Hmm.. DDLs aren't affected for me so far... although i do have a 4Meg connection and a 175.xxx address..

1.11 pm and full speed ahead for me for RS, Fsc and the usual suspects...

It's very simple actually..

Go to your nearest TMPoint.. you don't have to terminate your current account.. ask for availability of 4Mbps in your area, they will check your number in the database for ports..

If it's a go, then you'll have to fill up some forms, have it stamped by the counter people, ouh and make sure to photostat your IC, (account holder's IC) beforehand...

The port will be activated within 3 - 5 working days (took 4 days for my own upgrade).. All work done on their side, what will happen is that they alter the stats of your line (DS/US SNRs and port speeds) to support 4 Mbps.. Also in between the upgrade you will not lose Internet connection, only briefly as they change your port to the faster one...

Technician will come to check on your line for line stats and to tick the requisite boxes for have the minimum acceptable quality but will do nothing else... He will also hand you a new D-Link router (you can still use your own hardware though, no need to use their inferior router/modem combo if you don't want to)....

New contract will be in place when you hand in your forms previously and they confirm availability of the speed on your number/area...

I'm not sure whether you'd wanna downgrade to old package....

New speeds depend on how much the cap your line during the upgrade.. If you're lucky you get capped at 5120kbps.. if not it's just 4096 kbps... given line and PPPOE overhead you lose 10% of the speed so the actual DL speeds for a 4 Meg line is about 438kBps tops....

Hope that helps... and yes, for that limited hassle, it's worth it in my opinion... been on it for a year+ and i don't ever see myself going back to 1 Meg ever again.... Speeds are quite consistent for my area, and (mostly) great...

Although if you want the next step.. UNIFI is the way to go for low latency gaming needs...

@Hornet

That's a very interesting observation you've obtained there..

Perhaps we can "cheat" the system by using speed limiting software on our side to just go under the the arbitrary limit they impose before they cut off the connection?

I will test your hypothesis further then repost...

EDIT:- OMG Hornet you may be onto something here.. i just artificially limited my own DDLs to about 410kBps (max line cap is at 438kBps).. and the download is now stable.. and not fluctuating erratically...

Some food for thought there...

EDIT 2 :- I've ascertained that the max limit for me before Streamyx starts to cut connections for DDLs (aka hammering the line) is at 420kBps... the moment it goes above that line the connection drops...

Guys.. to beat the TCP congestion algorithm you just need to artifically limit your downloads to slightly lower than you total line speed as i've outlined in my post above..

E.g. if your max speed is normally 438 kBps for a 4 Mbps Streamyx line, just drop your speed in your download manager to about 410 kBps as the upper limit...

Problem solved, at least as far as i've noticed... Slightly lower top speeds are better than insanely spiking speeds and dropped connections

I seem to have been spared what most of you are facing re: the slowdowns... but then again i'm just DDLing from RS right now...

Pretty good speeds @ 400+ kBps stable....

Reporting from TTDI...

TMNUTz are back at their game again with the constant mess of DDL speeds from popular Filehosters...

God bless the creators of JDownloader for helping solve this issue....

On a 175.xxx IP

DDLs are surprisingly brisk using JDownloader and multi segmented DLs... FSC and the usual suspects yield lousy speeds on single connections, so multiples are the way to go...

Consistent 44x kBps FTW....

My Streamyx connection seems to have escaped the slowdown that has beguilled everyone else here...

Bulk DDLs are still running full speed ahead....

Hmmm... DDLs from multiple filehosters have been slowed to the a great degree for single file DLs..

It takes 15-20 simultaneous DLs from those hosters to cap out my line.. it usually starts happening after 5pm and continues until the following morning..

An interesting, but somewhat beneficial side effect of this limiting is that i can surf the net really smoothly while my line is capped to the limit with those 15 odd downloads in the background using the bandwidth.. Previously if i maxed out the line my surfing would suffer so i usually allow 10-20 kBps breathing space for Firefox to operate...

Very peculiar...

Hmm.. i finally see what everyone else is b****ing about...

Any real time streaming from US sites... (web radio or tv) is horrible, really horrible right now...

Even a 128kbps stream from an internet radio can't be played without continuous interruptions and buffering.. wtf lol....
