Hi all, could the sifus help me with the following:

I have been using Sonic Gear 2.1 speakers but am looking to get a 5.1 setup, to compliment my new 3D HDTV, for mainly gaming and watching movies. Prince ceiling being the price of the premium Logitech surround speakers.

1. Most of my gaming is done on the PS3 and I occasionally watch 3D blu-rays through it as well. I thought the optical input and HDMI are the only way of getting true surround from the PS3 or the RCA cables can suffice since, from reading the previous pages, I have noticed other brands being recommended to members looking to get 5.1 systems for PS3 gaming (yet none of them have optical inputs).

2. Any sound card recommendations that could take the PS3 optical sound in and output it, along with the PC sound, as surround sound through the 6-channel direct output thus allowing me to get other speaker brands not offering digital inputs. Like this HT | OMEGA STRIKER Card.

3. My room is pretty small, 3.5m x 2.5m, is this too small for surround sound or it will do just fine.

4. If am stuck with making a choice between the Logitech speakers, Z5500 and Z906, which will be the better option considering am not found of too much bass and would rather have more inputs allowing me to connect all my gaming consoles and other devices.

Thanks a lot in advance, cheers!

@rachet

those two logitechs are the best you can get with optical inputs

Z906 would suit you mainly you don't need that much bass and the 8" subwoofer is more than enough compared to the Z-5500 10" subwoofer which gets too boomy

questions about DAC converting optical to analogue has been asked many times around the forum but not many answers available.
even if they do the DAC alone cost a bomb already

Thanks a lot powe911 for your helpful and insightful reply. Gonna have to get the Z906 then. Out of curiosity, could help me clarify my previous question 1.

Not really...the PS3 can output audio through both RCA and Optical output so there is no conversion needed. I was looking to combine the audio from the PS3's optical output with that of the PC and feed them as 1 to speakers, that would not be having digital inputs, through 6-channel direct input.

didn't really understand the first question but...

it is possible to get surround speakers to work with RCA inputs, especially if you're using a desktop computer.
but do keep in mind that to achieve surround sound with RCA it's going to be super messy.

but a PS3 doesn't have analogue output for cheap 5.1 systems...(like Edifier S530D,DA5000PRO or HCS5640) only digitally optical or HDMI (do note that)
some forumers didn't realize that that's why they recommended those by mistake
it's a slight misunderstanding

I guess that should clarify your question?

furthermore many movies doesn't support full surround experience... thus many complains surround speakers are wasted too. icon_rolleyes.gif

Sorry no gaming brand.

I listen to Techno but not kind of boom boom thing, Techno Trance is more like instrumental song to me, feel it not shaking it.
