What he meant is after-market developers (e.g. XDA)

Not likely the case for HTC Sensation as HTC is very aggresive in locking the bootloader

for me, i would get sgs 2 because:

16gb > 1gb (sensation)
1650 mAh > 1520 mAH
1gb ram > 768 ram

battery life is important on such monster phones.. =) so yea sgs2.

Actually this checkerbox rendering thingy is already implemented in some newer version of current SGS1 firmware. I am personally using it now so i can attest to that. Only certain version though. Basically, when u pinch to zoom, everything will be blurred as u pinch, and it will only refocus the text/image once u release your finger. Sure, the advantage is that it's a lot smoother, but it's also less pretty to eyes smile.gif. The original browser on older firmware, will refocus the text real time as you zoom, and this will cause sluggishness if the website is graphic/flash heavy, but it's also more pleasing to the eye as you can read while you zoom. So, there's a compromise to both, unless the phone is powerful enough to refocus real time as you zoom.

However,"stop-rendering" during zoom pinching is a completely separate thing if i'm not wrong. I don't think SGS1 has that feature.
*
"stop rendering" is just my guess because checkerboard in the world of graphics design means transparency, something like a space of void that allows background images to be visible. Makes sense as my guess would be the zoom process actually involves the phone taking a screenshot of the page, resize it based on finger movement and then render the webpage based on zoom level.

The reason I wanna identify the rendering method is coz i wanna find a browser that has that implementation, and compare both rendering methods. Pretty sure the Sensation will not have that rendering style.

Unless, the whole thing is actually due to hardware acceleration (which I've read from youtube comments).

Anyway, by 'refocus' you mean the text become blur? Or 'text reflow'?

I emailed maxis to ask about SGS II

They called me and basically it is a "still no news and keep waiting" (as expected), at least they didn't say "no" straightaway so that's not a bad news after all

In SGS2, text reflow is not active in pinch-to-zoom, only works if you double tap, read from SGS2 owners in XDA.
While you doing a pinch-to-zoom, the text is not 'focused' yet until you release your finger, meaning the text you will see while pinching
is blur and jagged, once you release your finger, the text will look alright again.

will it be an answer?

Synthetic benchmarking aside, browsing with our Galaxy S II felt very snappy and smooth. The browser here has taken a trick out of Apple's Safari book, as it stops rendering the page when you do pinch-to-zoom or double-tap, to ensure fluid execution, and resumes when you lift your fingers off.

^ah hah. Thanks to above two replies. I forgot where I heard it from, and am pretty sure now it's from PhoneArena.

Seems my hypothesis is kinda right, in that a screenshot (or pseudo screenshot, whatever it is) is taken and zooming is performed on it.

Sucks that text-reflow is not automatic.

Would be interesting to investigate the user experience of both rendering method, ie smooth but jagged text, or jittery but sharp in focus text.
