i think HP dm1z is just for US market
for asia market it just HP dm1
the different i got when i research it thru internet was
*hp dm1z std spec - came with 3G ram and 320GB 7200rpm
*hp dm1 std spec - came with 2G ram and 500GB 5400rpm
*
Ok, noted. Thanks.
Was considering between Asus 1215 C-50 and this hp DM1. But I have never seen any Asus 1215 series at PJ Digital Mall ytd. Asus 1215 series seems very hard to find.

What are the diff between DM1 and DM1Z? Searched DM1Z at PJ Digital Mall yesterday, but only saw DM1 without "Z", asked seller is that DM1Z, he answered "no". The DM1 also AMD E-350 processor and Windows 7 Home Premium.
*
It's the same thing... Dunno why they renamed it to Dm1 when it arrived in Malaysia... the 'z' behind normal indicates it is using AMD processor... The same goes with the previous generation of Dm1z...

Man....you guys saw the DM1z....I was under the impression that it was delayed or something.....

That's a very good model. Many positive reviews.
Good value, good performance and the size 11.6" is perfect.

The delayed Asus 1215B with E-350 carries an indicative price of RM1399 (NO OS).
You bought yours with Win 7 Premium for RM1400+.

Its a good deal smile.gif

I went to the PC Fair on Friday and I too fell in love with the Dm1z and bought it straight away.

It cost me: 1569RM After upgrading it to 4GB Ram.

Here are some pictures:

Here are a few things I want to comment on:

          • Screen Size

The screen size initially came off to me as a bit small. This is because I have never used net books before. I got used to it really quickly and the display is crystal clear and smooth.

Compare Screen Size with a 14 inch Dell Inspiron:

          • Design

I really really like the way HP has designed this machine. Its sleek compact and not at all flashy or dull. I love the decorations on the front cover... however it does attract finger print smudges (palm area does not attract smudges). I also like how the logo is kept subtly in the corner and is not too flashy or prominent like most Acer Logos.

Finger Print smudges on front cover:

          • Keyboard

I really like the chiclet keyboard. It is crisp and firm. The only thing I find uncomfortable is that the right 'Shift' key is larger than the 'enter' key. I repeatedly mistake 'Shift' to be the 'Enter' key. But things like this get resolved as you get used to the machine.

          • Track pad

The track pad, this may be the only major flaw in the DM1z's design. First of all it is tiny. 3.5 inch when measured diagonally. And another issue is that the Track pad and the Buttons are not separated properly. Sometimes when you place your thumb at the 'left click button' of the Track Pad while simultaneously browsing the net, the mouse goes haywire because your thumb is 'unintentionally' touching the Track Pad to move the mouse around (Even when your thumb is well below white line).

Track pad supports multi touch.

Track Pad Size:

          • Heat

I have to say, even after HP's bad reputation for bad heat management, they have done a great job at keeping the DM1z cool. The laptop is at most 'warm' but never hot. I stayed up the whole night installing software, playing music, videos, movies continuously for about 8 hours straight. The heat was never uncomfortable or even noticeable at times. I read a lot of complaints about loud Fan noise, the fan has been pretty quiet throughout my usage. Haven't even heard a peep.

          • Battery life

I haven't had a chance to test this one out for real. But as far as I have used it, I am pretty sure it will go passed the 5 hours battery life stipulated by Engadget. And if you do turn your WIFI off as well as your sound, who knows maybe you can get the proclaimed 9 hours of battery life. I will have to wait and see it for myself.

            • Lack of USB 3.0

I had to rethink time and time again whether I should go for a laptop without USB 3.0. I transfer a lot of files in and out of the computer especially photos and music. I even purchased a USB 3.0 500GB Seagate external HDD for my would be ASUS 1215b. From an average of 30mb/s transfer rate on the USB 2.0, I can get 92mb/s with USB 3.0! This will be sadly missed. However, I get a sleeker design and a more compact product.
            • Speakers

The Altec Lansing speakers with Dolby Advanced Audio software are amazing. The quality of sound is quiet good and loud for a netbook, and is a lot better than the other AMD E-350 variants.

            •  Performance

I am not exactly technically savvy, so I am just going to talk briefly about my experience.

Note: I did not uninstall any HP bloatwares. I just used whatever was pre-installed. And my HDD is only 5400rpm while my ram is 4gb.

My HP DM1z Specs:

You guys all must have already read the professional reviews out there in the net. Everyone has a positive response for what the AMD Zacate can do for netbooks.

But, one thing I want to comment on, the processor will not be as smooth or crisp as you would have hoped. The boot up is abit slow. Now alot of people are telling me it is because of the bloatware, I have not uninstalled them, but even after altering windows setting for best performance and tweaking the registry a bit to boot up faster, it still takes at least 1.5 minutes to boot up. You will also experience noticeable amounts of lag when browsing with 15+ tabs open, especially if any of them has Flash animations on them. My Firefox nearly died on me when I was playing Zynga Poker on Facebook and browsing Youtube (not hd) at the same time.

However, the amazing thing is that it handles 720p HD, 1080p HD video streaming like a boss. No problems at all (Slight spikes if you have a few programmes running at the background). Even when playing less demanding games like DOTA, HON, CS 1.6 there were no problems.

I am hoping that after I purchase a 64GB SSD and freshly install Windows, my slow boot up problem will be solved. Friends did suggest that it was because a lot of the pre-installed programmes chk for updates when booting up which might also cause slow boot up.

          • Software

There are a lot of HP software pre-installed and it slows down your system considerably. The Stardock Fences Pro software was awesome for organizing my desktop other than that... its better to delete them. HP Quick start however is intriguing. It boots up your essential software without having to boot up Windows. It boots up in about 3-5 seconds, which is simply amazing considering you can chk your mail, skype, IM, Listen to Music, View photos and even fully browse the web. One major thing that it lacks, however, is the ability to play movies in your Hard drive. So if you want to watch your movies or downloaded videos you have to boot up windows. Which again takes at least 1.5 minutes with all these bloatware.

          • Conclusion

This is definitely the best mix of highly portable to highly capable ratio. Although I am a bit disappointed at the slow processor, it renders videos and low-end games flawlessly. This laptop is certainly a 'Netbook' and is the most portable out of its similar AMD E350 counterparts.

I trust this rig can rival Asus 1215B easily and the design is tempting especially the advantage of the power pin which is the only thing i didn't like for Asus netbook

They replace a whole new unit as they dont have a spare cover... so beware...

maybe you can buy a normal size keyboard protector and cut accordingly to fit the DM1, at least this is what I am doing...

I was disappointed with that as well. I asked them what if I do it manually, they said it would void my warranty. I find SSD upgrade in portable netbooks very important, so I think I am going to go for one even if it voids my warranty.

If ASUS 1215b does offer the HDD upgrades to either 7200rpm or SSD it will be a deal breaker for people who value there 1 year warranty. For netbooks I am a bit lenient with the warranty etc... because I do not plan to keep it for more than a year anyway.

Why do you want 7200rpm in a netbook? It doesn't really give any performance boost significantly but in return you get lower battery life because of higher power consumption.. It's either SSD or stick with the default one..

It won't void ur warranty, the salesman know nuts... There's not even a warranty void on HDD's.. Just that before you send it to warranty, you need to put back ur original HDD then it's fine dy..
