incredible S might not a good choice for you, its S-OFF, so far cant perma root it yet...

nexus s for the fastest devices to get official os updates, superb wide community...

guys .. please tell me ..

should i buy SGS2 or should i just wait for HTC Sensation?

money is not an issue..

thanks!
*
as we see from spec sheet, HTC Sensation uses snappydragon & qHD resolution screen...
so far no dual core launched is using Snapdragon dual core, so cant really noe how powerful it is
and due to its high reso screen might compressing down the benchmark performance, i.e. O2X & ATRIX uses same Tegra2 but O2X got better benchmark result because of its lower reso screen[WVGA vs qHD]
sensation is aluminium unibody & HTC is known for its good built quality phones, but screen display, samsung is better [Super AMOLED Plus]
SGS2 is more slimmer & bigger internal storage as well

Not all required rooting. Have you hold and try a Nexus S before. Before its look great on paper or picture.
Once you hold it feel flimsy and cheap. Incredible S does have very good build and specs compare to Nexus.
2.2 is actually good enough for use and like my self I don't even bothered with root on all of my android. Arc, X10, X8 and Galaxy 7.
Getting a Huawei X5 soon and also not planning to root or custom room as its good enough.

I was afraid of that, actually.

... What about Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant? $430 USD on ebay inc. shipping but will take up to 3-4 weeks to reach, so I had to rethink my decision >.<

thats the reason why i recommend nexus S..IS cant full/perma root...

QUOTE(wolve @ May 20 2011, 02:03 AM)
Hi guys! Finally getting a chance to try out AND own an Android phone! biggrin.gif Please help me make an informed decision ya~

1. Brand: Leaning towards HTC and Samsung due to its apparent popularity. Then again I am the sort who goes with the "underdog" (for want of a better word), which was why I shunned the iPhone in the first place, however beautiful it works and tempting the App Store is!

2. Budget: Not really much of an issue, actually. It's going to be given to me as sort of a bonus for work, but I don't really want to go all out and ask for a superbly pricey phone ^^

3. Specs: Um, Android Gingerbread? Not much of a specs person, leaning instead towards an all-rounder device

4. What I need in the phone:
a) must look pretty, then again all phones do when compared to my ancient Nokia
b) clear / vibrant screen
c) relatively free from major probs

I was sort of enamoured with the Google Nexus phone for a while but is it "dated", though? I am sure better phones have come out to best this model.

Then, I have read reviews and seen how awesome the Samsung Galaxy Ace and HTC Incredible S is.

So it's Google Nexus S vs Samsung Galaxy S vs HTC IS...

Am I missing out on others? Suggestions please?

PS: Oh yeah and my employer wants me to pick the Android from eBay. I know I need to find an unlocked/root device, but are there other concerns I need to address so that I get a perfectly working phone with my SIM card?

Thanks! ^^

EDIT: Crap! Just found out Galaxy Ace doesn't support Flash! And that Nexus S has Gingerbread! >.< How ah...
EDIT 2: Crap again - am eyeing Galaxy S >.<

I recommend you cross out incredible S. you can't flash custom roms on it with S-On. Go for SGS or Nexus S. They're both good. Make sure you get the S-AMOLED version of the Nexus S instead of the SLCD version.

Best is determine what you want and need.
1. Do you need custom rom?
2. What spec do you need.
3. What build quality, design, feeling that you need

When I buy a phone I will consider these things.

1. Design. Not your typical pda look phone. Should be a bit out of average. Phone is also a fashion statement.
Don't want to buy a phone that quite similar design with few models.

2. Specification. Decent enough for all the day to day use. Not lagging and not giving me issue while using it.

3. All rounder. HDMI for video player and lcd connection. Install moboplayer in your android and you can turn ypu phone into a decent video player on the go.
Take picture or video and play it on the tv directly. Or play movies and mtv.

Good picture and video as I don't have to bring my camera all the times and you never know when do you need to take decent pictures.

Good GPS device as that are times when you can use while lost or unsure to find your way. Its very useful features.

4. Easy typing and decent browsing. That's why again and again I keep telling new users 4.2 and above its a decent size for android.
The phone is not too big but easy enough for qwerty typing and web browsing. I have a 3", 3.2", 4" and 4.2" android phone.
Even 4" is not big enough and I love my 4.2" Xperia Arc

5. Accessories. Most important is a good high quality hardcase or leather pouch. I don't think Nexus has any except those cheap softcase.
You can find but a bit frustrating compared to the popular model. I got a decent hardcase and never take out my arc case any more.

So if I were you. I may take IS but problem is no HDMI. why not save and get apset of Arc?
Desire and nexus are old models whereby there are many new decent model out now and more is coming.
Judging from your budget I can set you able to get a Arc. I have persuaded a few moto android user, iphone4 users, dell streak users, and desire user to switch to Arc. They are very happy with the choice they made.

My recommendation is go out to a big shopping complex like lowyat, BB, mines and try out these phones. Hold them try them and you know which one you like.
But do bring a internet access to check their specs, accessories given and also price as normally these phone shop will charge quite expensive.

Galaxy S is an old design. Good is accessories not hard to find especially hardcase and softjacket.
Nexus is limited. So far I found 1 pouch and 1 softjacket.
Desire S is quite new but I am seeing its a popular product and accessories getting more and more.
Don't recommend vibrant, not officially release in malaysia and issue with accessories later.
Frustrating when you go phone shop and no casing for your phone but there is a tons of iphone and blackberry.

Worst come to worst save a bit more and get a better phone. I assume your budget around 1.5K.
So top up 250 can get Optimuz 2X, Arc AP and a lot more.

EXACTLY! SPOT ON! +1 !! biggrin.gif

Thanks for your help, but I'm still undecided. I'll probably follow your advice and go play with some suggested phones here to see which I like best smile.gif

One last question: What are some of the "cons" of Xperia Arc, after hearing so many pros? smile.gif

Cons. Single core processor. For some RAM is not sufficient but both is fine for my day to day use.
Best no2 phone in tech radar after SGS2. After using so many android I can say I am very happy with it. biggrin.gif

Would you say that, if you are expecting to use the phone for a long time to come, then dual core is better? smile.gif I'm not the sort who changes phone regularly, so I'm hoping to stick with something for say, the next 2 yrs or less depending on budget ^^;

From the way I abuse it now. I think its good enough for few years.
I am planning to keep this one long. I predict in 2 years dual core will be a main stream standard. In 2 years can sell this and get dual core.
Note that a phone is still a phone. Actually we can still use our symbian s60 fine now or 3gs. But we tend to change to stuff prettier and faster.

Thanks! smile.gif It's just that I get the feeling that since I am not going to switch to a new phone so soon or so easily, I may as well get the "best", whatever that is. >.<

Still thinking fondly about the Nexus S even though the Arc is beckoning me sad.gif

SGS 2's Exynos batch should be here in about 2 months or so. Since you will change to an Android go flash your phone to an Android version. SGS 2 will be around 2.3k I strongly suggest you get the SGS 2 if you dont want to change your phone in a while(2-3 years)

Defy already 2.2? Planning to buy this phone rather than the Ideos but 2.1 was a turn off.
Also does not support full HD video in 2.1. 2.2 I am not sure.

Ideos is a better value at 850. I am buying with the Nillkin hardcase and accessories at 899.
1300, you can buy a better value phone that normally range at 1300-1400.

was thinking of getting a mid range phone. now my choice is btw huawei u8800 ideos x5 vs samsung i9003 galaxy sl.
x5 seem to be a good choice as it's around 850 and hv 3.8" screen with flash support.
but galaxy sl is more expensive at around 1.3k but better processor, screen size, gorilla glass, etc..
by looking at price, x5 seem to be a good choice. anyone can comment more on this? thanks.
