Getting WB right in the camera is important not just because you need less PPing. It has got to do with noise. Wrong WB will give more noise after WB correction.
*
Hm... something new learned... I thought adjusting under-expose will introduce more noise. This will be difficult during event shooting as we can't always get the right WB.

Shooting under-expose image with lower iso will give mopre noise than shooting right exposure with higher iso.

Yes, difficult to get correct. Trying to get the right WB is tricky especially under mixed lighting. Getting your flash to match the mixed lighting was difficult too. Nowadays, the current Nikon DSLRs have very good high ISO. Minor WB tweaks is fine and not so apparent unless you shoot extreme Sunny WB and change to Tungsten under low light.

Yup. Back when before D3 and D700 were available, it is a common trick to overexpose and then PP back to the right exposure to reduce noise.

It's tricky especially if you're shooting event and have no time to set the wb, will use auto and trust the camera, even so when I pp, will notice the wb not consistent due to different condtion of lighting as you move around. Usually these are just minor tweaks

Talk about flash, it gives different wb feel comapred to no flash, hence, the natural vs with lighting. The hard to get WYSIWYG image is even harder with flash, but you can get some nice effect or lighting with flash off the wall. It's harder to get the WYSIWYG image indoors especially like Karaoke room with very dim lightings.

Even now I think this trick still applies especially for DX even for D7000 which said to have good high ISO. once shot undereposed, even iso 800 or lower gets really noisy, losing lots of details and sharpness. I guess thats one reason why some people complaint the iso is not good but actually they're under-exposing their image?

first wat do u want to shoot? and what camera are u using?
of cos if ur camera got more focus points, it makes it easier to track.
else just make sure u pan better.

I thought d3100 got 11 focus points.
Anyway not sure how fast d3100 can track, but u should explore its 3D-tracking feature if its just 1 person etc...
else i would just use single point af-c...unless u really trust one of its 11 points in dynamic to actually lock on to what u want to focus.

Sorry, is 11 focus point.

I tested yesterday. I will stick to AF-C + Single point , because i can predict my subject.

Im using AF-ON btw.

http://imaging.nikon.com/products/imaging/...speed_accuracy/

The above site got very nice info about it although is D3X , but still can applied in every nikon camera.

Added on March 21, 2011, 8:46 pmOne more , when im using AF-C+ Single Point with AF-On.

Let say im shooting stationary thing. I use af-on to focus , then i release the af-on but my focus does not lock one . Is it because my camera AF-on different with high end camera body? (i set my AE-L,AF-L button to become AF-On)

----------------Info---------------------------

How to use the AF-On technique in the field

To emulate single-servo mode (focus/recompose/shoot)

Place the active AF point on your subject
Press the AF-On button to acquire focus
Release the AF-On button to lock focus
Recompose and shoot
To focus continuously on a moving subject

Place the active AF point on the subject
Press the AF-On button
Keep the AF-On button pressed to track focus while simultaneously pressing the shutter release
Remember to initiate the VR system (if your lens supports it) by half-pressing the shutter button prior to releasing the shutter. Remember, VR takes about a half-second to stabilize, so you’ll want to anticipate your subject.

depends on my import source. if it's fresh from cf card: Copy and Add (to copy to HDD and add to catalog)

if it's from my HDD: Add.

No need DNG conversion for me as I'm highly unlikely to use/share the raw file with others.

All changes made to the Raw file are recorded and saved but still the raw file are left untouched so you can go back and forth through your steps.

Hmm... so DNG is not necessary. I googled around for info and many of them actually suggested DNG because it saves 15~20% space without losing details over RAW.

Please do correct me if I'm wrong, the changes made will be saved into the "catalog" aka "database" instead of the raw files itself? Therefore, if I lost the catalog, I'll lost all the touch-up I made? In addition, the raw will remain untouched?
