in short, Autofocus helps u get accurate(most of d time) focused image in convenient n fast way
imagine if those compact cameras dont have autofocus, there'll be less ppl doing camwhore  whistling.gif

that is wat u call auto focus (AF)

if you are opting for nikon entry level DSLR, you wont be able to use AF if the lens does not have this function where else for canon, you can do so bcos canon has a AF motor built-in inside the camera...

Wrong, it is because all Canon lens have motor built in. Nikon on the other hand some lens such as the cheap yet good 50mm f/1.8D does not have a built in motor but has to depend on the screw drive from the body.

instead of asking, why not try out the cameras which are within your budget ... hang around your group of friends if they are into photography as well ...

but naturally i would recommend a Nikon as i like their menu structure & easy of use ...

Both also good, it depends on individual; Some prefer Nikon, some prefer Canon, some have BOTH. Don't choose what others like, choose what you feel is best for you.....

And do you really need a DSLR? What are you looking for? Are you just buying it's cool to hold a DSLR? If you want easy to take good pictures, and you don't plan to invest in photograhy, Point and Shoot camera might be a better choice and value for money.

Bro I notice you keep using word len without "s", it should be lens (with the "s").

Btw, lens and lenses, not len and lens.

LEN is a female korean cosplayer which i like to collect in harddisk drool.gif brows.gif (okay actually off topic, got a lot picture but shoot with canon whistling.gif scare post in nikon thread haha....)

erm last time i asked nikon and canon in general comparison...
1) Nikon produce slightly contrast colour than canon...but that depend on your ISO setting, or you can photoCHOP later haha to make contrast more if you like laugh.gif
2) Depend on your friend, if your friend use more Nikon then go to nikon is easier since they can teach you and you can borrow lens from them and no need worry compatible issue.
3) Canon although is cheaper but price drop also faster then nikon? hmm.gif laugh.gif (not sure too..)
4) Canon DSLR every model had to learn back the menu key due to they every model also change the button from vertical to horizontal then vertical again... whistling.gif (Not sure too)

correct me if i m wrong. sweat.gif

well, im using the D3100 myself and i find it very easy to use and you can learn a lot from the 'Guide Mode' itself on how to take certain pictures with certain effects. so i wud say it is a good dslr for beginners like me.

i think the best way is to go into any shop and test out these 2 models, maybe you'll have an answer by then... thumbup.gif

and welcome to the world of DSLR rclxms.gif

Have you tried using one DSLR? For Nikon, you can try out the models in Nikon Centre @ Berjaya Times Square. The lens is kit lens, try it and see if like it. Some people (not mean you), they might not really know what they want and think DSLR is what they need, but after getting one, they find it harder to handle, heavy, bulky, and the kit lens can't offer the quality they want, but they're not willing to invest on better lens which is what they want for the quality.

Anyway, if you're looking for DSLR, then try it out yourself to know which you prefer more. Both Nikon and Canon design is different, the menu system is different, etc. No point buy Brand A because people say it's good, then later you hold/touch/feel/use Brand B and you prefer Brand B.
The camera is just a tool for photographer, choose what's best for yourself, not others.

the D3100 doesnt have a built in motor for focusing but most of the modern Nikon AF-S lenses have built in focus mechanism in them ...
