Wat's 2e Recovery?? Sorry for asking alot of noob question...  sweat.gif
*
Hehe, ts needs to update first post quickly smile.gif Anyway, welcome to the most active android thread in lowyat forum and your purchase of an amazing samsung galaxy s!

Now, for some explanation;

2e recovery is a version of recovery mode found in eclair. It allows unsigned clockworkmod file to be flashed. This is the recovery that you needed.

3e recovery is found in official froyo. It only allows signed packages/files, thus all custom roms, kernels, themes, etc cannot be flashed.

Please ask if there are still things you don't understand. Don't worry because there are alot of nice sifus to help you smile.gif

There are a few ways to do this. The best is just flash speedmod kernel. You need to flash it using odin method. See here: http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2010...to-install.html and http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2010...d-speedmod.html

coolya codeworkxx among others are working hard porting cyanogenmod7 (gingerbread for galaxy s) for us. Can see the progress at cyanogenmod's forum: http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/forum/85-sams...perimental-mod/ As for official gingerbread, samfirmware says at end of june - which I do not care. cyanogenmod is way awesomer!

Happy CNY to all SGS user, I have been using DOC Tom for 2 days. So far, it is stable and battery life better compare with Darky rom.  The only shortcoming is the internet browser only limited to 4 pages. Anyone have any idea to resolve it.
*
2.2.1 browser = 4 tabs with hardware acceleration
2.2 browser = 8 tabs without hardware acceleration

I think you may get 2.2 browser from sgs tools.

p/s I am going to try firefox 4 http://www.talkandroid.com/28977-mozilla-f...e-for-download/

Welcome to the lowyat forum!

If you upgrade by kies, your apps will not be affected. If you want to make backups prior to kies, you:
1. need to root
2. backup /efs folder
3. Install titanium backup and make the backups
4. (optional) backup sms with sms backup+ for example.

I found that even I've upgraded my firmware to froyo. My phone is still very laggy. I admire my friend's Iphone4. So smooth, be it scrolling or apps. After jailbreak....he can even download apps FOC. Gosh..have I bought a wrong phone? Help!!!!!!!!
*
I have my galaxy s which is just as smooth but with faster internet browser. All that thanks to optimized kernel.

I assure you that even with a jailbreak, iphone4 doesn't have the same level of functionality as an android phone.

If you dig aesthetics, iphone is better.
If you dig functionality and freedom, android is the way to go smile.gif

It'd be better if we help him right?

Despite galaxy s superb hardware capabilities, samsung made a bad choice of using in-house RFS (robust file system) as a file system format in the system instead of well used YAFFS or ext4. RFS or retarded file system was badly coded that it made the phone became slow and sluggish which is apparent after a few days (my experience, after a week) of use. Latest firmware of froyo (2.2.1) seen a good improvement over the earlier one in eclair.

The beauty of android and galaxy s, specifically is that it is very easy to tweak the phone at software level to your own liking.

Many of us here has chosen to use a much better firmware from third-party developers together with better kernel (the software core of the phone).

Pardon me for the technical jargon. But what can you do to improve the performance of your phone? The moost minimal invasive way is to just use an app called "one click lagfix" or OCLF for short. This app converts the RFS in the phone system into ext4 with ext2 binds. Suffice to say, your phone will fly again. (not fly away literally!)

To get this app, you need to download the apk file at http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment...98&d=1290580765 You need to have an xda-developers forum account to download this.

There are of course more invasive, but with more rewarding way to further increase the performance of the phone in addition to installing different themes, battery icons and lockscreens among other. Let OCLF be the first step towards that!

haha, you posted while I was typing a reply.
1. custom roms are usually faster than the official ones
2. Darkyy's rom is the most newbie friendly. You can start with that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091
3. There's a big FAQ here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596 Make sure you read all of them before jumping into custom rom
4. rooting is just having access to places in the phone normal people shouldn't go into. It won't increase smoothness. installing kernel or custom roms will.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! biggrin.gif
Woh, a major downgrade. OMAP 3630 and SLCD? Samsung out of hummingbird?
It's the android system itself. iPhone and SGS both have 512MB ram, but android uses more ram for internal drivers, so... we have less available ram. Wait for samsung to release new kernel drivers with more ram. Froyo had 304MB and Froyo 2.2.1 had 339MB. Chill, just make do with what we have. My phone multitasks and don't bog down also. iPhone don't multitask right, I just don't get it with my previous iPhone.
*
I fear that since apple stole, I mean bought off intrisity (the company that design hummingbird and a4 chip), samsung had to look elsewhere to design its chip. They couldn't find one now. That's why they resort to omap. Now what will happen to orion?

Obviously, amoled production is reserved for the next galaxy s. New amoled factory still under construction kot wink.gif

About the ram rant, apple sacrifice functionality for a great user experience (except its notification system-ask him how annoying and intrusive it is). Iphone4 is alot less functional compared to galaxy s. That's why it uses less ram.

Galaxy s OTOH, can do alot of things, thus the ram is used. Alot of free ram is a waste anyway as I have explained before. Free ram = wasted ram. My netbook only uses 57MB ram although it has 512MB ram. Upgrading to 4GB ram won't make it smoother and faster! In android and windows 7, free ram is turned into cached. That's why you see less free ram is available. Cache helps to speed up your phone.

Many of us install optimized kernels and flash custom rom that totally unleash the power of galaxy s.

tl/dr Galaxy S is awesome, fast and can do alot of things iphone4 can't.
It still is even with tegra2 based phones coming wink.gif

Addon: For a pretty and simple phone, get iphone. For pretty and functional, get android. Haha, I love my galaxy s!

Great! Can sifus teach me how to show off back to my friends with iphone4?
What are the functional things that I can do with my SGS and not on Iphone 4?
My friend has Papago in his Iphone 4, what do I have?
*
1. Multitasking.
Iphone 3gs can't multitask. Iphone4 still can't. What they show looks like multitasking but it actually isn't. Multitasking means having different apps running concurrently in the background.

When you switch apps, the previous app is put to sleep and saved into ram. This means, that app doesn't run at all. Your iphone4 friend ius actually running one app only. There's an exception to this rule. Some apps like browser or music player can tun in the background. Only limited apps, up to six I think can run in the background, and each app developer has to update their app to take advantage of this.

Android on the other hand, truly multitask just like your desktop computer. No pausing of apps. If more ram is needed, unused app is cleared off to make space for newly opened app. This is another reason why there's little free ram in android. This has its downside too. If an app is poorly designed, it will eat up your ram and battery.

2. see this, http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...20&p=39579458&#

Ts, we need a post that teaches android newbie how to brag our phone to iphone users biggrin.gif this is important so that we can help change the perception of public mind that android is superior than iphone!
advantages:
- Android has papago too. Along with other gps navigation apps.
- widgets - no need to open separate apps to see twitter, fb updates
- launchers
- google maps with 3d buildings - iphone has one too but is outdated.
- free google sky
- unobtrusive and not annoying notification system
- ability to play a wide range of videos and music
-.swype keyboard
- 3d gallery
- can browse for apps from the comfort of your computer and click install from there. It will magically appear on the phone!
- free angry birds with all levels!

- audiophile quality sound output.
- more beautiful screen - super amoled ftw
- can do tv output using 3.5mm headphone jack to rca.
- lighter
- no need cables to sync, just do it wirelessly.

Others please add some more. Too much typing tongue.gif swype FTW!

A lot of my friends who bought iphone DO NOT know these limitations. After buying it, they have to live with its limitations, but they do enjoy the simplicity and ease of use.

So, if you are looking for a simple phone, go for IPhone. If you are more technology savvy and wants a complex and great functional phone, get the SGS.

JUst my 2 cents...
*
I agree, a lot of people buy iphone just for the sake of the brand. Tech savvy people chooses android because they know it is more capable.

I hope once the iphone enthusiasm wanes, more people will choose android for its capabilities. It is up to people like us to educate.

QUOTE(jd4eva @ Feb 3 2011, 10:19 AM)
No and Yes. Bluetooth can tranfer files. But only to the i-family product only
No. After jailbreak. Facetime can use 3G as well through 3rd party apps I think.
Retina display is good enough. No need always SuperAMOLED.
Livewallpaper....SGS has limited nice wallpapers. Those from Samsung is excellent. But from other source.....Duh!!!
I don't know. I just wanna put my SGS to the full potential so that when I show it to my friend, they are the one to think that they should get SGS. Not the other way round.....Do you understand me?
I choosed SGS because I really thought that it's a great phone.....But now, it doesn't seem to me to be like that.....Can anyone help me to change that perception?
*
1. Bluetooth - shows how restrictive and money hungry apple is. They squeeze every last bit of penny from you to only buy from apple-licenced products.
2. Yes, can facetime after jailbreak - which will void warranty.
3. Both retina display and super amoled are way better than other types of display in the market. RD is sharper, super amoled color is more vibrant.
4. Go to http://market.android.com look under live wallpaper. there are plenty of cool ones.

I'm sure as you learn using the phone, you'll discover more about it, and brag to your friends wink.gif

My take on the apple / android "which is better " question.

It's basically the same as the macs vs pc's ... for people who aren't so techincally inclined, who doesnt want to tinker with their equiptment, who are satisfied with their stock equiptment, who are willing to pay a premium for something that runs as well as stated on the box, these people will b the die hard apple fans. They look onto the people who 'flash their phones' with horror.

The flip side to those people are the pc/android bunch. These guys want the extra bang for their buck; overclocking, flashing roms, hackintoshing .... everything to run a better, faster piece of equiptment for much less $$ than the previous bunch of people.

No use convincing either side the merits of each particular camp, all mainly die hard.

You guys know which camp you are in.
*
I agree with you to a certain extent. But that doesn't mean a layman cannot learn to tinker their phone.

Depends on what your definition of medium usage. As to mine, the phone lasts all day long. It is definitely worth it despite tegra2 phones are coming in a few months.

First of all, I would like to thank TS for answering my questions so patiently. But I still have some doubts.

1. How can I improve my SGS speed without lossing the original UI from Samsung???

2. I heard Titanium Backup only work for ROOTED SGS. As My SGS is still with original Samsung ROM and not rooted yet. Can it really function in my SGS?

3. Does it mean if I just do Kerneling on my SGS, the apps and data in my phone won't be deleted and I don't need a backup? Does kernelling improve the speed of my apps and scrolling??

4. Do I need to backup the original ROM/ Firmware before flashing to my new custom ROM? (It Clears the doubt of Question 5 as well)

How you can help again. Many many thanks.
*
1. Just flash a kernel like speedmod. No need to back up or to be rooted.
2. Must be rooted for tb to function. See first post for rooting instructions.
3. Yes, no need back up. Although it is advisable to do so. Improves performance and smoothness radically!
4. No need. Stock official firmware is available online.

my warranty sticker wasnt on the screws so it is easy for me ... Just dont be like me, being too skeptical about it being too easy and went overboard, just consulted my electronic engineering friend and since my whole chrome antenna is still afix i can just stick it back onto the board with super glue!! ...
it can use both GPS and data plan, by using both together it will become A-GPS which locks on faster due to using network satellites to determine ur location ...
no worries, it can be used with just GPS alone ... since i dont have my gps antenna now, i would need to use data plan to try get a lock and check where i am when i go sightseeing ...

Sorry to hear that. Please let us know if super glue fixes the problem.
