you sure can tahan for another 2 years? i did the same thing myself last year, but guess what now... i'm craving for a new and better phone. gila gila...
*
I was super excited when I learned about android in 2008. Linux OS backed up by google? I'm sold! I immediately saw that it will be a very popular choice among developers.

So I waited until a good phone to come out. Not until two years later, I got myself my first android phone, the galaxy s!

QUOTE(haxri @ Feb 16 2011, 01:22 PM)
well, currently i'm using n900 as my phone.. i bought this phone last year with a sole promised to myself.. no more new phones.. but yeah.. after the shyt nokia has fallen into, and the maemo project masuk longkang, i guess, i just might jump ship..

a month ago i have been eyeing on SGS, but on the day im at maxis to buy the phone, the people there told me to wait a few months for the new SGS2.. so yeah.. i'm waiting.. as waiting is what i can do.. but, will only buy if it is under maxis contract..
*
You know that N900 is very easily hackable right? Can put android, meego on the phone.

Hi guys,
I just got SGS from my bro after he decided to be iFag...
Currently I am on stock JXPA rom, as usual the GPS is not so accurate (70 meters only). Anyone has tried the Darky Extreme rom?
*
A lot of us do. But custom ROM does not affect gps performance. The modems are.

There are a number of things you can do to improve gps signal

1. Install fasterfix to lock faster. This app simply uses a nearer server.
- download attachement
- extract to get the apk file.
- copy it to sdcard
- browse using file manager and click on it. it'll prompt to install

2. Install different modem. Different modem on different area, carrier, phone can have different performances. Look here:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843019 (Under alternate modems.

3. Hardware fix. Phones that was manufactured before october has a problem with the hardware. there's a fix for that. But try the above methods first.

Both JPY and JPX modem fare badly with my phone. JPP is a lot better. I'm in India so my result may not be applicable to Malaysians.

Anyone experience this?

When a call came, I had to swipe to the right a few times before able to take a call...then the speaker mode automatically switch on, and cannot turn off....

Weird? Not sure it is the ROM or Kernel?
Another weird thing I encountered 2 days ago, i tap on the Camera shortcut button on Homescreen but nothing happen....so embarassing coz I was asked to take a photo and when I whipped out my SGS, the camera did not function...I had to reboot the phone then it was okay again???

I'm on Darky 9.2, Speedmod K13A-500Hz kernel...

Any of you faces this kind of random bugs?
*
On Insanity and tried with both SO kernel and speedmod. I have never experience both issues that you mentioned.

People are still buying iphone 3gs when iphone4 is available. Maybe some people wanted a phone that fits into their budget.

Will it replace the stock Samsung keyboard? or just an additional keyboard option beside Swype and Samsung Keyboard?

Thanks

wahlau, ur very advanced!! SGS might not worth that much when the SGS2 finally arrives. besides, i have my doubts about the battery life of the SGS2 and the upgrades dont seem so significant. i just hope Gingerbread will be available soon for SGS.
*
it'd be like iphone4 and iphone3gs. there'll be people wanting the previous gen phone for budget reason.

But for me, I don't see sgs2 to be a significant update. I'll be staying with this phone with the promise of cyanogenmod!

Some of the main improvement of SGS2 which I like are:

1) 8 Megapixel rear camera with LED flash
2) Front camera is 2 Megapixel.
3) 1 Gig Internal RAM
4) Matt back cover casing (will not be a fingerprint magnet I think).
5) Not sure if it is 1080p HD recording?
6) Bigger capacity 1650mah battery.
*
1. Led flash is very useful, but xenon flash is better. But cannot compare to a normal compact camera for quality. To me, phone camera is useful for quick snapshots, qr code, goggles, augmented reality.

2. Good, can get better quality for video conferencing. Though not critical.

3. With optimized kernel, 512ram seems enough. Linux is famed for its low hardware requirement because it is very efficient. (unlike crappy windows). My netbook running on fully functional arch linux only consumes 57MB ram. I will be disappointed if future android requires more ram to run. However, 1GB ram is very useful for gaming.

5.i believe so. The atrix will only have 1080p recording after a firmware update.

6. Dual core = less battery consumption. Coupled together with higher battery capacity, will give longer battery life. Really nice.

Don't forget about near field communication too.

to me, battery life and faster processor is what I'd like. The rest are gimmicks especially I don't do those casual gaming on a phone.

While dual core speed bump on a phone is nice, it will give much more impact on a tablet. I wanted to see a miniature desktop core2duo performance on a tablet where I can run not only android, but conventional linux like ubuntu as well. I imagine running lampp server, play football manager, civilization, etc on a tablet rclxm9.gif if I can run those on a phone, that'd be superb!

sgs is fine for my needs. Sgs2 is better in every way but it doesn't do enough to justify for an upgrade. YMMV.

for those thinking of buying a smartphone for the first time, you won't regret buying those dual core ones like sgs2.

aduh sgs 2 no more gps issue right?

Nexus s uses modern ext4 file system instead of retarded file system (rfs). Maybe they've learned their mistake. Hopefully there will be no gps issue as well. Then, it'll be a winner if it is easily available throughout the world.

3. more ram is always better. remember the famous fail statement that Bill denies?

yeah, don't be another Bill Gates. RAM is never enough.
*
Yes. But unused ram is a wasted ram. It'd make no difference if ram is bumped to 4gb if a lot of them goes unused.

You can have a beautiful functional ubuntu linux desktop for under 512ram. My netbook takes 57MB ram only. If android needs more, it speaks inefficiency (like windows). IMO, the 1gb ram is needed to play high end 3d games. One day if I decide I wanted to play 3d games, it'd be a minimum of 1gb ram with a core2duo level of performance - can use hdmi cable to play on tv. Right now, this phone suffices for me. Different people will have different needs.

true. you are right.
but from consumer standpoint, its better to have more & wasted ram than not enough  rclxms.gif so i say the more the merrier.

just because today we do no see the need to utilize that much ram, doesn't mean tomorrow it won't be utilized smile.gif
*
Yup.
Consumer pov: Bigger is always better right smile.gif
The average joe and jane will always think 1gb to be better than 512 or 768mb ram. even though they may not utilize half of it.

I remember long time ago at lowyat plaza, there were banners advertising intel's 4mb L2 cache or something. I'm sure normal consumer have no idea what it means.

Samsung pov: Samsung is leveraging its advantage in flash memories. might as well put in 1gb

My pov: satisfied with my phone. Not impressed with games on the phone. If I want to play high end games, I use my desktop.

Verdict: imo, sgs2 will sell well. because of its brilliant screen and availability.

addon: There's very little info about kal-el but this is mindblowing drool.gif http://androidcommunity.com/kal-el-nvidia-...gra-2-20110218/

Dear sifus, flash to speedmod kernel nid to backup all my stuff (e.g. Apps, sms) ?
I heard tat most of the backup app need to be rooted. Im planning to root my phone from speedmod there after i hav flashed it.
*
- flashing speedmod, no need backup apps+data
- can root after flashing

before all that, you need to see if you have 3-button combo working for download mode (switch off, then hold down volume+home+power button) and recovery mode (switch off, then hold up volume+home+power button)

I assume you want to flash by odin method?

ic... Well, last time i tested with recovery mode (jz play play only), jz simple switch off my phone n hold volume up+home+power and it works.
So i assume tat download mode might work as well.

Yup, im following the guide here by odin method.

1 question, "Copy the speedmod-kernel-x-y.tar file into the same directory as Odin."
Is it mean if my Odin (Odin3 v1.52.exe) is in Desktop, speedmod-kernel-x-y.tar also must in Desktop as well ?
*
According to the instruction, yes that's right. Although I've flashed by odin with the files on a different directory than odin.

QUOTE(redzuanjohari @ Feb 20 2011, 06:00 PM)
can anyone explain to me this functions in speedmod

1) wipe dalvik cache
2) wipe battery stats

TQ
*
1. Googled it and I found this to be quite accurate:
QUOTE
dalvik is a virtual machine in android operating system that runs applications, which is similar java vm. dalvik builds some sort of cache of applications (i wouldn't go into details) to run them faster in dalvik cache space. you can clear them out, and android will rebuild the cache on the next boot. and the initial boot will take longer than usual once you wiped the dalvik cache because android needs to rebuild it.

Imagine them being cache files build up so that your apps runs faster. No harm deleting it but if you do, apps will rebuild them and will be slow initially.

2. The phone keeps information about the battery history and usage. We usually delete them when you see huge battery percentage drain. Deleting it at full charge is one way to do battery calibrating.

p/s Welcome to the lowyat forum! I commend you for an intelligent first post rclxms.gif
