if both doesnt give any noise, better u stick with 3200 ISO..faster shutter speed mah

True, last weekend got a show to shoot. I was thinking heck just use D90 since I need the range, when shooting more and more sian -.- The ISO performance + AF system is ~_~ compared to D700.

I would suggest you post a photo you took at ISO3200 and it appear there's no noise to you here. We can judge and see how is it like.

i notice earlier u talked about why should u drop from iso3200 to iso100/200 at the expense of shutter speed...
but from your exif, you could also have opened up your aperture to 5.6 instead of 8 while maintaining same shutter...and also be able to shoot at iso1600...or even double your shutter speed if u prefer.

maybe iso3200 may look like no noise, but sometimes its not the noise, but the loss of detail at higher iso.

looks like the D3100 ISO performance is better than my D90 ... maybe its time for me to upgrade ... hehehe ...

u can even go check all the iso shoots they do on dpreview and see the results with any camera review.

looking forward to D300s replacement ... no plan to upgrade to full frame cos the lens prices will definitely kill me ... i only have DX lenses ... Nikkor 16-85 & Tokina 11-16 ... the only full frame lens i got is the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 that just went haywire recently ...

If you're viewing the image so small, even digital camera quality looks good....

When you bump up the ISO, definitely you will notice noise/grain, just how acceptable it is at which ISO; hence, the acceptable ISO for each camera.
Noise/Grain will affect the detail of the picture, as well as the sharpness.
If you're viewing on the computer, try zoom larger and you will see all the ugly details. Maybe later as you have seen more, you will be able to see the loss of details without the need to zoom larger.

Proper exposure is also important, wrongly expose will generate more noise/grain even you shoot at lower ISO compared to picture shot at higher ISO properly exposed. Hence, why some people complain about the poor ISO performance VS the rated performance.

Should I sell away 50mm f/1.4G and get Sigmalux 50mm?

Go for 24mm.
Sigmalux gives nicer image quality at biggest opening thanks to the aspherical element inside.

Tried both. Sigmalux focus not so accurate though

if ur in a tight budget the 18-70 will do very well ... only advantage of the 16-85 is the wider range & the longer focal length ... not forgetting the VR2 ... but sharpness wise i would say both of them are the same ... but the 18-70 has a better aperture range ...

18-70 doesnt have VR ... IQ wise both the same ... only different focal range & the 16-85 is RM2100 brand new ...

16-85 is not a kit lens lah.
