Man of Steel (2013)

ohmy.gif This movie has more action in it first 15 mins compare to many other action films!!!

I kid you NOT!!

Casting:

Russell Crowe  rclxms.gif
Kevin Costner  rclxms.gif
Diane Lane  rclxms.gif
Cooper Timberline + Dylan Sprayberry who looks like Henry Cavill only younger!!  rclxms.gif  biggrin.gif

I feel a few miscast (please refer to peeves)

Story:

I am actually very VERY familiar with the superman storyline, from the comic books (Curt Swan - John Bryne period), TV series from Superman (1941), Adventures of Superman (1952–1958), Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993), Smallville, to the animation to all the motion pictures....

Trust me, I know the superman material....

I actually like Superman Returns (2006) by Bryan Singer (don't kill me), So what do I think of this script!! In a word, EPIC!!

Huge, HUGE storyline.

Planet Krypton never looked so alien. Although homage was paid to the old Curt Swan series (I know most of you young'un have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about).

Director Zack Snyder also paid homage to alot of big movies (Avatar and Matrix comes to mind)... and  have to add, it actually added to the movie.

I do have a few peeves about it (please refer to peeves)

Action

One word. Big. really REALLY BIG. Smallville and Metropolis will never be the same...

Peeves

Months before the movie, there were so many trailers and TV spot, most of them are so great, it almost guaranteed an epic movie, just like The Dark Knight.

The flashbacks were OK in the beginning but almost mid-end of the movie still got flashbacks, some are really unnecessary.

General Zod was overshadowed by Faora, it seems that she got better moves and fight cooler than Zod.

Some questionable scene, like why is Lois ordered to aboard the ship? It serves no purpose and it doesnt explain in the movie.

The fight sequence dragged too much it became boring at times, repetition at its best.

The list goes on and on, sorry for my rant, im just a disappointed fan.

No, no, please do not apologise for 'ranting'. Everyone has the right to speak.

You have made some very good observations and I can see where you are coming from.

If you can understand that in Superman Return, Bryan Singer being a rabid fanboy of the Christopher Reeves superman, made a 154 mins homage to it. Warner Brother claims THAT movie cost them 260,000,000 (yes, you read right) to make and Bryan Singer swore UP and Down it did not (more like 180,000,000).

What really happened was, Superman was in development hell from 1987 to 2005. So many version was planned. I can think of at least two version with script and pre production cost, namely a Tim Burton/Nicholas Cage version and a Brett Ratner/Matt Bomer (interesting fact, he would have been the first openly gay actor to play the role) version. Warner Brothers lumped all this development hell cost into Bryan Singer's movie. Which I think is unfair... Bryan was suppose to make another Superman movie for 2009, but they opted not to go that way.

Truth to be told I actually love Superman Return, but Warner Brothers was disappointed with the 385,000,000 return in investment...

Which brings us to this version. Warner brothers believe a very action oriented version would bring in the moo la and they are right.

And as I had stated your rants are justified.

My suggestion to you would be to IGNORE all the "propaganda" studios put out before the movie. I believe I have stop digging for all the information I can about the movie, since the Batman & Robin debacle!!?! I really find I enjoy movie much better that way. I can actually be surprise by the movie!!

As all the stuff I put in here, this is merely my opinions.

Thank you for reading.

Warm Bodies (2013)

Zombie Movie + Frankenstein Monster + Romeo & Juliet??? (I kid you NOT)

And you know what, I actually like THIS!!

Okay, okay, it is actually a Rom Com!!

And a very VERY well done Rom Com!!!

It is original and it is very VERY well done?

Nicholas Hoult is really getting around, Jack from Jack the Giant Slayer, Hank/Beast in X-Men: First Class and he is going to be in the reboot of Mad Max!!

As I said, this guys is getting around and no wonder, for a young dude, he acting skills is actually pretty versatile!!

Watch out for Rob Corddry's M, he almost steals the show!! He may just be the next Simon Pegg!!

I think this is great and I should NOT spoil it for you guys.

If you want a feel good movie with a different twist, give this a try, why don't youse. Youse know youse want to...

Gangster Squad (2013)

Rating: 5/10 - decent, tries too hard without actually achieving much.

The Rainmaker (1997)

Rating: 7/10 - great story with good acting.

Warm Bodies (2013)

Rating: 7.5/10 - Cute and funny, pretty good as well.

Monsters Inc (2001)

Monsters University (2013)

I am a big fan of Pixar. I'll admit it. Hooked when Toy Story came out. So it'll be no surprise when I say that Monsters University is a good watch. I'm not saying that just because I'm a fan but because it's really worth a view. Since I can't review one movie without the other, I'll do both in one go.

If you have seen Monsters Inc. about a dozen years back, you will know that Monsters University is a prequel to that first movie. Monsters Inc was one of the best from Pixar. It's creative, fresh and the story is really touching. In Monsters, we are shown that there is a parallel universe that exists alongside ours. Monsters inhabit that universe and much like ours, the monsters have day jobs and go about their lives. There's only one thing that ties their universe to ours : human screams power the monster's world like electricity powers ours. To get power, monsters have to come to our world and scare children when they are in bed. When the children scream, the screams are collected and used to power the monster world. Now, these monsters are by no means all evil and mean any harm. They just want to power their world and the monsters that comes to our world are called scarers and it's their job to scare.

How do the monsters get to our world? Well, they have developed a kind of portal technology that uses doors; closet doors to be specific. When a portal door is powered up and opened, it opens to our world and the monsters step out of our closets. Children room's closets to be exact. Ever heard about children complaining about monsters emerging from their closets? Well, this is why. Brilliant concept!

In Monsters Inc. we follow Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) and James P. Sullivan (John Goodman), 2 monsters and best friends working in Monsters Inc, a power company. Sullivan or Sulley is a scarer and Mike is his assistant. Things get out of hand when Sulley finds an unattended door in their workplace after office hours when he goes back to collect his paperwork. After a little investigating, Sulley unwittingly lets a human child into their world. In the monster world a human child is considered highly toxic and can kill a monster. When word about the child gets out, chaos erupts. Mike and Sulley has to find a way to get the child back to her world without hurting anyone.

Lots of laughs and lots of heart in Monsters Inc.

Monster University goes back to a time before Mike and Sulley were working in Monsters Inc. It starts with Mike being a young elementary school student. A field trip to Monsters Inc inspires Mike to want to become a scarer. He studies hard to achieve his dreams and gets accepted to Monsters University, a top school for scarers.

There he meets James P. Sullivan, a fellow scare major student and Mike cannot stand the sight of him. Mike is the typical nerd while Sulley is the typical jock. Their rivalry ultimately cause them both to be kicked out of the scare program. Mike, not wanting to give up on his dreams, plans to join the annual Scare Games on the campus and win it. This is to prove that he is the best there is and to force the dean to accept him back into the scare program. During the registration for the games, Mike makes a bet with the dean. If his team wins, the dean has to let him back into the scare program but if he loses, he will be expelled from the University. The dean accepts the bet but there is one problem: Mike's team is short of one member and there is no prizes for guessing who joins the team at the last minute. Yup. it's Sulley.

We then see how Mike and Sulley's friendship begins to form over the course of the movie.

Plenty of laughs to be had and it also has plenty of heart but not as much as Monster Inc.

Rating :

3.5 stars out of 5 for Monsters Inc.

3 stars out of 5 for Monsters University

Despicable Me 2 (2013)

If movie be the food of humor, let the movie play on... (sorry Shakespeare, but imitation is the best form of flattery tongue.gif)

I feel that it aptly describe this movie.

It is well scripted.

A worthy sequel to the first, and that ladies and gentleman, it a feat!!

I tried hard not to, but I laughed...

There I said it, happy!! nod.gif

On another note, there are MORE adult in the cinema then there are children... I kid you not... laugh.gif

Father Goose (1964)

Wow, there is no business like show business!!

In this movie Cary Grant is at his MOST un Cary Grant!!

He is neither suave nor debonair. His character is a drunk and also in certain way ruffian!! And he has to take care of 7 your school girl and their caretaker (Leslie Caron), during WWII with the Japs at their tail!!!

Very unlikely, and have to add very funny.

I have forgotten how funny classic movies can be.

And have to add, a breath of fresh air really!!

One for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Monsters University (2013)

Smart. Really Smart.

Monsters, Inc. (2001) was made 12 years back... Well at least released 12 years back, so if a kid was 6-8 yo then, they are in college and now we have Monsters University. Marketing department at it's BEST!!

I watched Despicable Me 2 during the weekend and Monster's University yesterday and you know what, the storyline blows DM 2 out of the water.

Even the short at the beginning... (Stop toying with my emotions PIXAR!!)

We have Paperman (2012) short at the beginning of Wreck-It Ralph. It is a Disney product, although paperman was 2D like, it was a 3D product made to look 2D... Paying Homage to Disney's pass

The Blue Umbrella LOOKS PHOTO REALISTIC!! Paying homage to the fact that Pixar Pioneered 3D full feature movies... Wow...

Hollywood, a good script. A GOOD SCRIPT is EVERYTHING!!!

The ending, my goodness the ending...

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

I am currently in a funk and have to add, I have NO regret watching this!!

If you had not had the chance to watch this in the cinema, PLEASE RECONSIDER.

Pacific Rim (2013)

Tokusatsu. If you understand that word and what it stands for, stop reading and go buy a ticket to watch the movie right now. For those that are not familiar with the word, here's a question: Did you enjoy Ultraman back when you were a kid? If you answered 'yes' then stop reading and go buy a ticket to watch the movie right now.

Yes. This movie is Hollywood's answer to Japanese tokusatsu series like Ultraman and Super Sentai. In that sense, it's a great watch. Don't go expecting mind blowing acting or complicated plots. It's like Ultraman. Monster appear. Human fight. Human loses. Ultraman appears. Ultraman fights. Ultraman wins. Everybody celebrates. That's basically the whole plot. Just substitute Ultraman with Jaegers. While Ultraman uses actors in rubber suits, Pacific Rim has plenty of budget to make both the Jaegers and monsters look real. The cities that got thrashed during the fights looked very real too. So it's all good!

The special effects are great. The mecha / Jaegers moves realistically. The story is ok. Lots of action. All in all, great entertainment. I'm waiting for a Robotech live action movie now. biggrin.gif

Rating : 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Pacific Rim - 9/10

The story probably began as the writers asked themselves: what happens if Godzillas meets Gundam, with a dash of underwater sci fi? The idea of each individual elements - monsters, robots and hero vs villain - isn't new to movie goers by now, but combine them together, and tell the story in a poetic way, that is something refreshing.

The monsters and robot battle scenes carried the movie, that's undoubtedly. They were epic, adrenaline pumping, yet realistic. Each Kaiju has their own uniqueness, Category Ones only wreck havoc with their sheer massive horns and claws, while Category Four monsters have evolved to be much more dangerous, spraying corrosive acid slime and emitting particles that can even fry electronic devices. Jaegers have different weapons to inflict damage to the kaijus, such as swords, plasma blaster, spinning blades and rocket missiles. It is a delight to see realism in the fights, where the laws of physics and anatomy is eminent. The kaijus are more fluid and natural in their motions, which contrasts with the rather sluggish and mechanical Jaegers. And none of the fights seemed to be 'pointless', each was necessary and was done for just the right duration. (Albeit I really hoped to see more of the Chinese and Russian Jaegers in action before succumbing to the twin-jaegers)

Characters
This is achilles' heel of the movie. Not one personality stood out, other than Hannibal Chau, in a cameo appearance by Ron Perlman (Hellboy). Everyone else is like a well-cut life-sized human cardboard. The director and the actors didn't had the ability to make the audience care for the characters much.

Raleigh, was bland. Mako, played the role of a shy, troubled Japanese girl well, but at times it can be frustrating seeing her keeping so much secret to herself. Commander Stacker, sharing the spotlight with Raleigh, steals a lot of attention and screentime from Raleigh, which dilutes the cast of the young Raleigh. Nevertheless, Stacker is da man: when he speaks, it is commanding and believable.

Pacific Rim is a dark, gritty movie. Most fight scenes happen at night, perhaps to highlight the florescent glow of the monsters?

The visuals are deliberately designed and crafted. The robots are a la steampunk on paint bucket steroids. With different generations of the Jaegers, we can see how the designs evolved and improvised overtime. A lot of attention had been paid to the battle robots, like the war-scuffed metal bodies, and how the sea water droplets sprinkles when the jaeger slams its fists together in preparation for a fight. Those are attention to details that helped make the movie relatable and believable.

The monsters, as said earlier, has various abilities, and therefore sport different looks. Some have tails, some insect-like mouth, some rhinoceros thorns. They look very intimidating.

The second half of the movie has some really matching OST. They blend in nicely and complements the atmosphere that the movie wants to convey. Kudos to that. What is a great movie without some amazing OST?

The story of Pacific Rim is original, with stunning graphics and intriguing plot as its main pillars. It is definitely one of the movies worth checking out this summer. If there were to be a sequel coming up, I'll be lining up. icon_rolleyes.gif
