Eat Drink Man Woman (1994)

Now for something completely different.

Li Ang's Eat Drink Man Woman.

Great script. Great acting. Great direction.

Drama and it is mesmerizing!!

I cannot take my eyes of it.

About a 5 stars restaurant chef and his relationship with his daughter.

Li Ang successfully portray the communication or lack there of in a Chinese family.

The way this family is abole to talk to each other is through food!!

Just the way the food is prepared here!!

If you like a well crafted drama, look no farther.

Video transfer is on/off. I suspect the source material was NEVER fantastic. And have to add, it is much better then the DVD.

Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984)

Of all the life action Tarzan movie, I have to say this is my favorite.

Even today it is actually... relevant.

Christopher Lambert is spot on as Tarzan. Not a muscle bound man that grunts. I agree with the director Hugh Hudson. They had alot of trouble casting Tarzan and was actually in a hotel lobby in Paris at wits end... An in walks in Christopher Lambert. A lanky man...

What attracted the director to Christopher Lambert was... his eyes... There are "beast-like" quality to them!!!

They spent 3 month training this lanky lad into what you see on screen!!!

Ian Holm is also here!!

Interestingly, when Disney made an animated feature, there are scenes from this movie that are "transferred" over (shall we say).

What this movie did very successfully for me is, if Tarzan exist, what realistically can happen!!

Good stuff.

Please do not compare this to Tarzan and the Lost City (1998 *Groan*)

There is a CGI version of Tarzan being release this year. I understand they are also trying to revive a live action movie of Tarzan with Alexander Skarsgård (of true Blood fame)...

... All I can say is, let me enjoy this for now...

The Conjuring (2013)

I'm in LOVE!!!!

I'm in love with James Wan!!!! laugh.gif tongue.gif

Okay, maybe I'm hyperbole-ing.... biggrin.gif

I am really enjoying his work!

Well, maybe NOT Saw (2004), not a gore fan, but his Insidious and now The Conjuring, has proven that he understand how to capture his audience in suspense!!

Wow.

Supposedly based on true story.

Some things are obviously artistic licensing.... but the end product, impressive.

I'm also in love with Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel) and Lili Taylor!! Is that too greedy??? tongue.gif I forgive Lili Taylor for The Haunting (1999). She is a really convincing actress!!

Some character have potential but weren't allowed to shine. And have to add at 2 hours, I can understand why.

It is really hard to comprehend why they would keep all the... supernatural artifacts at they home!! I personally would not! That's just because I'm chicken shit!!! laugh.gif

If you are a fan of horror, go for it!!

watched quite a few recently..here are my reviews smile.gif

Rooftop(2013) - 9.5/10
-> A new movie directed by Jay Chou, it is an action+romance+musical+comedy movie, if you guys ever watched Les Miserable, this movie is similar to movie Les Miserable, listening to musics and lyrics is the point. Jay Chou is a composer,so you can assume how good all the OSTs will be. This movie has happy and sad moments. Very good and big improvements compare to previous movie Secret(last time the story advancing so slow). Even you are not a jay fan,I am sure you will enjoy the movie as well.

PS: honestly, based on the title named "Rooftop",people might assume it will be boring,I have this thought as well but it turn out very well, just ignore the word "rooftop" lol

Man of Steel(2013) 7/10
-> It is a Superman movie, this movie basically introduces superman background and how/why he became superman. The 1st 2 hours just introduction(talking, talking, talking),the last 30mins was a blast, better than the scenes in Avengers lol

Pacific Rim(2013) 9.8/10
-> Wow,I dont need to explain much on this one,JUST WATCH IT! I remembered the day I watched this trailer,I say it is a must to watch, a very very good movie, I enjoy from the beginning till the end. It would be better if production using some easy terms that can be understood by everyone.

RIPD(2013) 9/10
-> This movie is just like everyone said, Men in Black White version, you can expect lots of humor with funny conversation/scenes. This movie is entertaining. This movie would be better if more of different kinds/looks of "deado" tongue.gif

World War Z(2013) 9.5/10
-> Dont need to explain much in this movie too,JUST WATCH IT!

Lone Ranger(2013) 9.5/10
-> I thought this movie is boring but it turns out very very well, lots of humor and funny convertsation, sure PotC fans will watch it but if you are not PotC fans,I highly you watch it as well, it was enjoyable smile.gif

so many great movies recently,I expect upcoming movies will be boring like the new percy jackson sad.gif
I am looking forward to The Conjuring

Thank you everyone who posted reviews for new movies esepcially Mov_freak ,I read reviews here to decide what movies I should watch biggrin.gif

Godzilla 4K Remaster Edition (1998)

Roland Emmerich & Dean Devlin!!

They rock the 90s.

What they did for the 90s in Hollywood, was what Paul Verhoeven did for Hollywood in the 80s!!!

Stargate, Independence Day etc!!

Back to Godzilla.

King Kong (1933) was a big deal. It was at the height of the Depression, and as poor as people was, they paid the nickel at the cinema to watch The Eighth Wonder of the World, if anything to escape their real lives...

And they actually rooted for King Kong when he rampage through New York city, because they feel his is destroying society that had trodden on them...

So when King Kong was on the Empire States building (the tallest building in the world at the time) and was shot down by the bi-plane, the people actually felt for the big ape...

Like King Kong, Godzilla is a monster movie. The irony is that the original King Kong inspired Toho to make Godzilla. And Toho did actually make a Godzilla vs King Kong movie after their owner of the King Kong rights keep failing to make another sequel to King Kong after The Son Of Kong!!

And in 1998, Toho license Godzilla to TriStar Pictures (a subsidiary of Sony) to make a big budget movie.

And the result is... mixed...

The critics were not particularly kind to it. I believe it made $136,023,813 (USA) although it cost TriStar $130,000,000 (USA) to make. Worldwide it made $221,600,000 (USD) and apparently that is still a disappointment to TriStar (if it is NOT a hit in the States... It is NOT A HIT!!!)

And like King Kong, we are suppose to feel for Godzilla and I do!!

Personally I enjoy this movie.

It is camp, but I like it.

It did spawn a Animated Series, and there was suppose to be a sequel but that never materialise...

Now they are planning a remake for 2014...

The Picture and Sound quality on the 4K Remaster is abundantly better then it's original Bluray release.

RoboCop (1987)

Ah Paul Verhoeven...

Why did he decide to stop making movies in Hollywood...

Peter Weller got "the robot" down peg!!

Also very interesting what Kurtwood Smith (he is Clarence J. Boddicker the cop killer in this). Because when even I see him now, I keep imagining him as Red from That 70s Show!!! (My foot up your ass) laugh.gif

From a picture quality point of view, this movie is not pretty.

With Orion's bankruptcy, and then being sold to MGM and now MGM is mainly owned by Sony... I really wonder how well the masters for the film is being kept, let alone digitally remaster/restored (this looks more like a remaster rather then a restore)...

Having gotten that out of the way, the movie itself (story line) is good and still stands the test of time!!

Like all Paul Verhoeven movie's this is very violent!!

So viewers beware.

The Conjuring (2013) - 9.5/10
-> Finally a real scary creepy movie is released,I have been waiting for this kind of horror movie and this is what horror movie should be like. I watched many horror movies and most are talk 1st then scare later,it just so boring but this movie is different, scare 1st then talk later. I highly suggest for those who likes horror movies, you must watch it in cinema to experience the feeling smile.gif

PS: Dig some info about James Wan, James Wan origin is from Malaysia,he is the 1st director and writer for SAW series as he is the person started this movie franchise, you dont know how much I love SAW series, I love the SAW concept is the karma, you did bad things, you deserved to be tortured. Looking forward to his new movie production Fast 7 biggrin.gif love James Wan works from now on XD

Oblivion (2013) - 3/10
-> I would like to thank god that I avoided this movie during showtimes, this movie is boring as expected from trailer. I just watched it after dled this today. The trailer shows all the action/shooting scenes. Thats all,no more additional action/shooting scenes from full movie. This movie is story driven just like Jack Reacher. Talking ATW. There are so many parts are quite slow and production team can shorten the film into 1.5hrs instead of 2hrs and this 1.5hrs wont even worth your time. You can skip this movie as you will not remember anything after watching full movie(except the scene where Tom and the girl who swimming in the see-through pool, maybe lol).

like Mov_freak said, just my 2 cents XD

next review will be Scary MoVie(2013) or Epic(2013).

Oblivion (2013)

Hahahaha!

It takes alot to entertain current movie viewers.

Science fiction movies have been around since the 50s.

Many a science fiction writers have given us so many angles to science fiction storyline, I truly believe, that is really isn't an original idea, for a very VERY long time.

The writers of this story had thrown in EVERY theme of science fiction there is, THAT in itself, truly remarkable!!

Alien Invasion, End of the World, Last Man and Woman on the planet, Utter destruction (on a planetary scale), cloning, ultra modern living to living in the gutters...

I notice that many a people had compared this movie to a particular movie (from few years back). Personally, I see influences from, Independence Day, 2001 The Space Odyssey, anything by P.K. Dick, episodes from The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits!!

The homage paid in this movie is mind boggling!!

This is an AMBITIOUS movie!! Too some extent, I feel, overly ambitious.

Credit where credit is due, the designers in this movie, deserves special mention!! Very VERY manga, and their actually look like they work!! (Flight ship and collapsible motor bike)

Here is the kicker...

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

This is really REALLY hard for me to say.

I would really REALLY like to say that I absolutely positively LOVE this movie...

I can see that the story writers and director put their heart and soul into this project...

Tom Cruise is really invested into the movie as well...

Pacing... the pacing...

... I can only say that is movie is slight above okay...

Good job on digging up about James Wan!!

As for Oblivion, I agree that the pacing could have been much better. On another note, did you like Jack Reacher?

Everybody has their own style of writing. So you write in the style you are comfortable with. Keep it up.

Interesting that you brought that up.

I think it is a conscious decision on the writer's/director's part where the relationship between Tom Cruise and Andrea Riseborough characters (Jack & Victoria), everything is... arranged. Victoria loves Jack alot more then Jack loved Victoria. So there is always a "nervousness" on her part. The hesitations and false starts.... I really praise Andrea Riseborough. She was really able to convey this through her craft. The relationship between Tom Cruise and Olga Kurylenko (jack and Julia) is suppose to be more organic, spontaneous and.... lacking a better term, free. And that is where trouble brews... There is very little chemistry between Tom Cruise and Olga Kurylenko...

I love Jack Reacher much more better as I am so curious about the character Jack Reacher(who, what, why, how), I wanted to keep it up to know more about him, even Jack Reacher is story driven(Talking ATW) but it was way better alot compare to Oblivion. Most scenes/plot in Oblivion are exactly what I expected, you can even confirmed what you were expecting are correct after listening to Morgan Freeman's explanation.

I give Jack Reacher(2012) - 8/10.

like wolverine(2013) , imdb scoring: 7.1 but then everyone said this movie is average only lol

Everyone has different taste in movies. I don't blame nor dislike your review if you give Oblivion 3/10. There is no single movie out there who can satisfy each and everyone's expectations. Some people prefer simple movies. Some like it that way. Hard to please everyone. laugh.gif

Horror Stories 2(2013) - 4/10
->It is a Korean movie and this movie is divided into 3 different stories, I highly suggest just watch the third story one named "Go Another World", the third story is creepy like Silent Hill if you really want me to name one haha. You can skip the 1st two stories as those 1st two are just boring and pointless,as expected, its korean film, always advancing slow and I dont feel any damn scary/creepy moments. The biggest disadvantage is the dark environment, way too dark in all three stories,I tried to tune high in brightness setting,it did not help much lol

Dante's Peak (1997)

When this movie was release, it was a big deal.

The visual feast and sound was spectacular!!

Now, re-visited on Bluray, visually and sonically... it is still GOOD!! thumbup.gif

There are some inconsistencies though...

1) There are Vulcanologist who looks like Peirce Brosnan!! tongue.gif
2) The volcano at Dante Peak has multiple personalities.... There are three types of volcanoes. Composite, Cinder Cone and Shield Volcano. A volcano can either be one or the other and each have different characteristics!! At different point in time, Dante Peak display different types of characteristics relating to different type of volcano!?! Very puzzling. hmm.gif Apart from that, from a scientific point of view, when ever something happens to the volcano (apart from the multi personality), it is actually accurate.

But if you can get pass the above, it is an enjoyable disaster movie!! laugh.gif

-> I have been waiting for this new series very long time and finally watched yesterday. Same like previous movies, stupid ideas/scenes and funny conversation all around the movies. I bursting my laugh off quite few times, damn funny and stupid. They are using "Mama" as their main story line. One thing I dont like is the movie is so short, only last 1.5hrs including all credits-roll(15mins for credit roll only). Be sure to watch the NG scenes during credits biggrin.gif

Parody of some movies:(so far I know of or I missed some maybe)
