Still learning bits and pieces about mobile robotics. Came here from an advance algorithm lab, looking to implement my FYP on robots but sometimes progress are soooo slow, I don't even feel like going.  laugh.gif
CEASTech. Not really jaga la, but I'm usually there doing whatever.

What is the purpose of the robot that you are going to build? Is it a Masters or Ph.D research topic? Can I know who is your supervisor?

Is that a new research group/center/institute in UniMAP? Never heard of this when I left.

It is under the admin of which School? Mecha? hmm.gif

Taman Muhibah, Jejawi. Mechatronic I think.

The end product should be for gas localisation and mapping. I'm doing MSc for now but others in the group (mobile bots) are doing it for their phd.

Dr. Ammar Zakaria. A cool guy cool2.gif

Sorry, I really don't know if it's new. Didn't graduate from unimap. Should be mecha. blush.gif

Ohh nice! The application sounds interesting enough.

Didn't know you did not graduate from UniMAP. So where did you do your undergrad?

What type of mobile robot used in the lab? Front-wheel steering or Differential-drive steering? sweat.gif

Was your FYP about the advanced algorithm for motion planning and trajectory generation? huh.gif

Sounds like it's for gas leak detection. unsure.gif

Nagoya University, Japan. Need a change of scenery after 4 years over there and I thought hey, why not take a breather in Perlis for a while? laugh.gif

But I do want to finish this as fast as I can.

I believe most of them in the lab right now are differential-drive bots. iCreate Turtlebot, Khepera, ePuck etc. We're not really building a brand new bot, we buy them, assemble it, a few tweaks here and there and then develop the bot based on our needs.

No unfortunately it's not but it is related to graph traversal problems and I believe it can be implemented for mapping. hmm.gif

You're right. It's for gas leak detection but more importantly, to find the source(location) of the leak. The lab downstairs are developing their e-nose sensors and I'm looking forward to use it on the bot when they're done.

Things are kind of messy right now, we're just using whatever that are available for use. laugh.gif

I believe you can modify the algorithm to incorporate the Artificial Potential Field approach for the gas sampling strategy. This approach is effective in early leakage detection where the potential is represented by the gas concentration level. After collecting a few positive samples, the potential field map can be generated and updated recursively as new samples are collected. This will drive the mobile robot to move towards locations of high mean concentration, high concentration variance, or areas for which the uncertainty about the gas diffusion model is still relatively large. icon_idea.gif

Hey, thanks for the idea. I believe I've read something like this in a journal a few months back. Going to try it after I get my hands on some gas sensors.

Hahaha I know but I have my own personal reasons and f*** the Japs. laugh.gif Techs? Yeah sure, they're more advanced but based on my plan and what I'm doing right now, all I need is a computer, a bot with decent odometry and gas sensors. laugh.gif
Have my eyes on Europe for my PhD tho blush.gif

If the mobile robot navigates in unknown terrain and at a risk of colliding with static obstacles or moving obstacles (humans, vehicles, other robots), you need to consider adding the obstacle avoidance algorithm, such as the Rapidly-exploring Random Trees (RRT).

Since the gas leaks usually occur at flanged joints, you probably also need to include a vision-based system or an image-processing algorithm to identify the shapes of the joints, or using thermography to display a leak as a plume of vapor in the infrared image, so that the robot can pinpoint the exact location of a leak as accurate as possible.

CEASTech is under Prof Ali Yeon, or should I say he is the biggest boss over there la lol.
can't say it's 'new' research group as Prof Ali has been active in his field for long time under mecha but they got him a Center of Excellence lab

Are you interested in local uni SLAB/SLAI? I heard UNISZA Terengganu offers SLAB/SLAI slots since they need a lot of manpower now.

Owh I see. Prof Ali has made quite a significant contribution to his field, doesn't surprise me if UniMAP gives him a whole research center to manage.

By the way, I have seen many UniMAP professors, as well as researchers like to publish in IEEE journals. Very few has published in Wiley and Elsevier. With all due respect, why is that so? It really baffles me. hmm.gif

That I can't actually or simply answer on anyone's behalf, or perhaps there's just no correct answer for that.
Anyway, my 2 cents is, a lot of local conferences collaborates with IEEE, and it's more focused towards engineering studies than publishers with the very wide range. My Prof has always been promoting Elsevier and Springerlink for its free journal publications, it's just us who too scared to send our papers there LOL.
