I think its about RM1.2-1.3k now. If it's me I would not get the XZ-1 again. I would probably get the Canon S100 or the upcoming Sony RX100.  biggrin.gif

i'm curious to know why wouldn't you want another xz1? what is the reason if i may ask?

Because I'm not too satisfied with the performance of the sensor at high ISOs. And it's also not very compact. So if I want a compact camera, I'd get the Canon S100 which can fit into my pocket or something that performs better and don't mind the size, I'd get the Sony RX100 or Canon G1X etc.

To me, while the XZ-1 is a good camera, it's neither compact enough nor performs well enough. It's neither here nor there for me.

Plus, the video mode is a joke. It says it does 720p HD movies but I really can't believe that. laugh.gif

I don't find those lens protectors necessary for the XZ-1. As long as you are careful, you'll be fine. biggrin.gif

Thats cos we benchmark it against our dslr's tongue.gif
The G1X also has its quirks like its AF and MFD .. And the RX100 is a sony tongue.gif
For me.. The xz-1 main weakness is the jpeg smear and the joke of a video mode

True also, it's unfair cause I use my 5D more often then the XZ-1. laugh.gif

However, I do love the fast lens on the XZ-1. That's the killer feature for me. And like what you said, the JPEG smear and also the RAW noise is much worse when compared to the S100 for example. Of course, the video mode also doh.gif

Hopefully the XZ-2 has a full fledged 1080p mode without the AF problems and also a better sensor. biggrin.gif

Specs wise, I believe RX100 will perform better than XZ-1 with Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* and the larger (slightly) sensor.

But XZ-1 performs very near to RX100, and has a better macro focus distance.

Definitely RX100 more powderful... I think its fair (based on Nikon 1) to expect at least 2 stops better performance. Color depth and dynamic range also so be better.

Problem is... XZ1 is selling for NT9500 (taiwan dollar) now and RX100 is expected to sell at NT21000 which is more expensive than Nikon V1, NEX-F3, GX1 kit (or even with the 20mm) let alone all the GF's and PEN's.

In this sense... It's pretty expensive for a compact.

Hi guys, any take on xz-1 compare to oly e-pm1? Latter with standard kit 14-42mm price around RM1500 now, but aperture starts at 3.5 compare to xz-1 1.8, again m43 bigger sensor should able to deliver better result in higher iso.

Thinking of upgrading my current pana lx3, can't decide whic to go for. i got another dslr but most of time i'm with compact due to easy carry...

Obviously I chose the XZ-1 for "pocketability".

The E-PM1 will be better on wide end of the zoom and about the same at the long end of the zoom.

And you can't pocket it. The body is about same size as the XZ-1... as slippery too but the lens is thick so end up still take up quite a bit of space.

Hmm looks like the RX100 will be around the price of the Fuji X10. Both are around the same price range. hmm.gif

Oh yeah, how much did you pay for the LC-63A auto lens cap for the XZ-1? YL is offering me RM120 but have to order. Wondering if it's worth it or not. unsure.gif

Hmm I see. Though I'm not sure if I want to spend RM120 for the XZ-1 since I don't use it often. hmm.gif

if e-pm1 fit with a pancake lens then it will be pocketable. tried before handling not top notch but with 14-42mm lens it's quite easy to be hold on my big hands.

Since its sensor is way larger I thought it's easier to create bokeh effect & possibly cleaner pics at higher iso.

just wonder if video capacibities should put in consideration as well, I heard xz-1 video not as good as claimed.

It'll definitely be cleaner at higher ISO with the EPM-1. The XZ-1 is good up to ISO400 at best. And you're right, the video mode on the XZ-1 is a joke. Don't even bother with it. Nowhere near 720p quality. sweat.gif

IMO,

On size... for me, size of most mirrorless camera also ok di but problem is thickness.

The thinnest m43 pancake lens is the 14mm panny which is ~20mm thick.

E-PM1 is ~8mm thinner than the XZ-1 so even with the thinnest pancake prime... it's still about 1cm thicker than the XZ-1.

I feel the XZ-1 is already bordering on the maximum thickness I can fit into my pant pocket (still bulging like hell).

Video wise....the XZ-1 video mode sarks balls. Period.

Check out the vid samples for the E-PM1 on vimeo/youtube or various review sites la... I think its still smudged and with artifact... I think Iphone vid also better (in fact, I use the XZ-1 as my everywhere camera but when vid is needed.... still use Iphone) tongue.gif

Oly vid (OM-D aside) still lacks behind Panasonic and Sony.

Somewhere in this thread (I think)... I posted about the dof comparison between XZ-1 sensor size/lens speed combo vs various others including m43. If strictly only using the kit zoom, XZ-1 has a more shallower dof.

Noise wise.... yes... XZ-1 sensor is noisy but this is counter-balanced by its very bright lens. You'll have to get fast primes on m43's to beat the XZ-1 for low light.

Some night time snapshots during my late night jalan jalan session with the XZ-1

m43 with 12mp is only about <2 stop better niah. My beef is not so much so high ISO (at least the detail retention is good here) but more of low ISO noise and the shadows/DR

Right on spot, pics frm my lx3 are kinda bad under low light especially dinner & gathering, notice iso1600 at its best for these occasions, so trying to ask sifus here if m43 better choice than xz-1 smile.gif

You can go to dpreview's comparison tool and check lo...

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/OlympusXZ1/11

E-PM1's ISO800 is roughly the same as XZ-1's ISO400 let alone ISO1600.

For reasonably clean ISO1600... imo have to go Panny GX1, Oly OM-D, Sony NEX route di.

Spam another sample... dark dark restaurant.

Nice pics! thumbup.gif jpeg straight frm xz-1 or edited?

Think you are right, any premium compacts are barely pocketable except canon S series, but again handling suffer, hard to strike a balance...

Video features on camera mostly gimmicks, i saw oly video before, not sure how they categorized it as 720p also, but when i consider m43 with compact, some obvious advantage for me is premium compact can do macro, marginally smaller compare kit lens & fast lens. The m43 counter back with cleaner iso, better DOF (seems this is not true compre with xz-1) and better DR.

How's DR for xz-1?

When i shoot under bright sun especially msia with lx3 often i get a lot of clipped highlights, or when situation i shoot ppl under backlit without flash, found dslr tend to have better exposure for subject not too dim & background not too over bright... nod.gif

I shoot RAW and convert via Lightroom with a preset for masking, some sharpening and noise reduction for most photos.

DR is the same between all the m43's (except OM-D and GH2) and the XZ-1 = not that brilliant.

Good DR have to go NEX-5N di.
