EV= Exposure Value.

I tried to google for pic of XZ-1's display with the exposure compensation bars out but couldn't find it.

Anyway... it's in the manual.
*
But in manual mode, the exposure value is set by the camera itself. I can only change the aperture and shutter speed.

Changing any of the exposure triangle... Aperture, shutter speed or ISO = EV

I was trying out the different shutter speed and ISO in low light, realised that the color varies approaching the higher ISO, is this normal?

Ooo, thanks!

This test, I was trying to balance the camera shake (see how low shutter speed I can go) and also the noise in the high iso. Would like to get you guy's opinion on which picture among the wide that you guys like the best?

For me, the wide one, I can't seem to detect any motion blur, on the iso 100 picture, even though it is at 1/10 sec.

For the zoom one, its hard to choose between the iso 400 and iso 800, iso 800 seems to have less motion blur but the color is worse.

The general photography rule of thumb for shutter speed is that it should be 1/effective focal length.

For example: if shoot widest 28mm, then by right the minimal shutter speed to avoid shake is 1/28sec.

However, since XZ-1 has a compact sensor and kungfu image stabilization... hence you (depending on individual.. whether got drink coffee, wank, parkinson or smoke etc tongue.gif ) can use a far lower shutter speed than that.

But the concept remain... the further you zoom, the faster the shutter speed you need to minimize blur due to shake.

Blur from moving subjects is another topic altogether.

As for ISO...

ISO 100-200 --> No significant real difference in everyday use

Up to ISO 400 --> Noise creeping up and colors starts to go.

Anything above that is really details vs noise... choose one.

Personally I always try to keep within ISO200 and worse case scenario ISO640 for really difficult shots.

This one is ISO640.... Warning: Non Halal dead thing picture

hey guys...need some advice. am struggling to capture decent shots under dim lighting / night shots.

after much experimenting & reading on aperture/shutter speed, i finally got some decent night shots with these settings:

Av Mode
ISO 100
Exposure +1
No flash

The photo becomes SO DARK when i use the external pop up flash. Any idea why? I expected it to be dark, cause i've been making myself see the histogram.

Tried M mode for night shots (thought having a control over shutter speed would be good), but i've not idea why the exposure (?) is automatically -2, which makes my photos extremely dark.

I've no basics in photography, but would love to learn cause i've seen really sharp photos taken with xz-1. Under dim lighting my photos are blur and just horrible without using full flash.

Try bumping up the ISO to at ISO 400 or higher. And set your F-number to a smaller value, say f/1.8 if you are shooting at 28mm. That would help with your problems.

Also, I recommend reading this article done by our very own admin of this site, goldfries.

Another two articles regarding shutter speed and aperture: HERE and HERE.

If I understand the bolded part correctly.. you can control the shutter speed by pressing up on the D-pad... and rotate the back dial. Just dial it up to zero or +1/3 (cos I think XZ-1 tend to underexpose a tad)

Or maybe just post the pics for us to get an idea.

I went to olympus site and i only found xz-1. should i buy back this camera or is there any new camera that is better than this with the same price? i think i bought it for 1.5k(with extra batt), what is the price now?

I think its about RM1.2-1.3k now. If it's me I would not get the XZ-1 again. I would probably get the Canon S100 or the upcoming Sony RX100. biggrin.gif
